Congress Addanki MLA meets Jagan

Giving another shock to the ruling Congress party, its MLA Gottipati Ravi Kumar, who represents Addanki constituency in Prakasam district, called on YSR Congress president YS Jaganmohan Reddy in the Chanchalguda Jail here on Monday.

TRS wins two seats

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi has won both the MLC seats in North Telangana with Swamy Goud and Sudhakar Reddy winning the Graduates and teachers seats respectively.

Swamy Goud of TRS won the North Telangana Graduates MLC elections. He secured over 33,000 first preferential votes and has emerged as winner. Speaking on the occasion, he said that his victory was the victory of the people of Telangana.

Left parties oppose power tariff hike

The public hearing on the proposed power tariff hike had witnessed strong protests from the left parties and other social organizations.

Pakistani President to visit Iran to finalise gas pipeline deal

Despite mounting US pressure, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly decided to travel to Tehran this week to finalise a multibillion dollar gas pipeline deal.

Under the agreement, Iran would offer a loan of USD 500 million to Pakistan for the construction of a gas pipeline on its side of the border. However, the project has run into trouble due to an absence of investors fearing economic sanctions by the US, reports The Express Tribune.

Congress leaders taking strong objection to Chandrababu Naidu’s remarks while opposition party leaders coming to his defence. Naidu using harsh words against Congress was condemned by Congress leader P Sudharkar Reddy, Minister Kondru Murali and others.

“The remarks are unparliamentary and he should be booked for making such remarks in public,” Congressmen said.

‘God particle’ could spell doom for Universe

A potential Higgs Boson particle discovered last year could spell doom for our universe, researchers claim.

The mass of the so called ‘God particle’, uncovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, is a key ingredient in a calculation that signals the future of space and time.

“This calculation tells you that many tens of billions of years from now there will be a catastrophe,” Joseph Lykken, a theoretical physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia said.

New discovery could lead to more effective flu drugs

A team of scientists from Edinburgh University found that well-fed water fleas were more contagious than those given less to eat.

How brain protects itself from stroke damage decoded

Scientists have for the first time explained mechanisms behind the brain`s ability to protect itself from damage due to stroke.

The Oxford University researchers hope that harnessing this inbuilt biological mechanism, identified in rats, could help in treating stroke and preventing other neurodegenerative diseases in the future.

“We have shown for the first time that the brain has mechanisms that it can use to protect itself and keep brain cells alive,” said lead researcher Professor Alastair Buchan in a statement.

Asthma drug could help cure severe itchy rash

A high-dose shot of a common asthma drug, once a month, has been found to be highly effective in treating teens and adults chronically afflicted with severe, itchy rash, says a new study.

Known as omalizumab, the drug was tested on 323 people at 55 medical centres for whom standard antihistamine therapy failed to quell underlying, allergy-like reaction, known as chronic idiopathic urticaria or chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Killer robots `danger to mankind`

A human rights group is set to launch a global campaign to highlight the danger of killing machines and wants a ban before they become a reality.

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that robot warfare is the next step up from unmanned drones, and will be available within the decade, the Sun reported.

HRW, a New York based NGO that spends millions each year raising awareness of human rights, says that the most of public are not aware of the danger they are in.

Muslims solidly against Modi: Katju

High alert sounded in Meghalaya

Meghalaya has been put under high alert in line with the advisory issued to all North Eastern states by the Centre following Hyderabad terror attack which left 16 dead and 117 injured, official sources said on Monday.

“We have taken necessary safety measures in line with the direction from the Home Ministry we received last week,” state Inspector General of Police GHP Raju told a news agency.

The Home Ministry has alerted all major cities and town all over north eastern states seeking police high alert especially in crowded areas, the IGP said.

Two powerful bombs recovered, two arrested

Two powerful bombs were recovered and two persons were on Monday arrested in this connection at Laifam Khunou area in Imphal West district, police said.

On a tip-off the police commandos rushed to Laifam Khunou area in the outskirts of the town and recovered from a house the bombs, the sources said.

Owner of the house E Gyaneshore Singh and along with his accomplice whose name was not yet known have been arrested and interrogation was on, sources said adding that the commandos were also searching the surrounding area.

Putin signs smoking ban bill into law

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a smoking ban bill into law, the Kremlin said Monday.

The law bans smoking in public places, including bars, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, stadiums and train stations, reported Xinhua.

It also imposes measures to reduce the demand for tobacco products and restrict trade in them. Advertising and sponsorship of tobacco is prohibited under the law.

The State Duma, or lower house of the parliament, approved the bill on Feb 12 and the Federation Council, the upper house, passed it Feb 20.

It will come into effect June 1.
