CCTV cameras must be maintained for timely results: R R Patil

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil held an important meeting today to discuss installation of close circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the state. During his visit to Thane to participate in a function organised by the Thane police, he told reporters that almost 97 per cent of CCTV cameras in Mumbai city have been installed by the private parties and their maintainance is a major issue. CCTV footage is not always useful for police investigations, and hence today’s meeting was held to discuss the issue at length, he said.

Woman drinks concoction of mashed bangles and water

Upset with her husband over a fight, a woman allegedly mashed her bangles, mixed them with water and consumed the concoction, rendering her in critical condition, police said today. Anita (35) had a fight with husband Rajkumar, SSP Vijay Yadav said. When she was alone at home today, the victim mashed the bangles and mixed them in water, before consuming the liquid, Yadav said. She was rushed in critical condition to district hospital, he said. PTI

Alleging that Muslims were always being blamed for terror attacks in the country, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi today claimed that the pattern of discrimination could be seen in the investigation into the recent Hyderabad blasts. Jet flight makes emergency landing, passengers, crew safe

A Jet Airways aircraft with 135 passengers on board made an emergency landing at the N S C Bose International airport here tonight after it developed a technical snag in the mid-air. Airport sources said that around 10:12 pm the pilot of flight number 517, coming from Mumbai, sought the ATC’s permission for emergency landing citing some technical problem in tyre. With all standard emergency measures in place, the plane safely landed at 10:22 pm without any hitches and the air passengers and crew of the Mumbai-Kolkata flight disembarked.

NIA questions Somalian, Hyderabad youth

A National Investigating Agency team today questioned the arrested Somalian and a Hyderabad youth, who were caught while trying to sneak into Nepal, in connection with last week’s blasts in the Andhra Pradesh capital. On a request of NIA team, the district police made a plea in a court for police remand of the two, which was accepted and the duo were brought to Raxual police station where NIA team questioned them in connection with twin Hyderbabad blasts, East Champaran Superintendent of Police Ganesh Kumar said.

BJP opposed to giving police powers to NCTC, says Arun Jaitley

BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Monday said his party was not opposed to the setting up of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) but it was against giving police powers to the proposed anti-terror hub.

In an article posted on the party’s website, Jaitley said powers and jurisdiction of NCTC must be within the constitutional framework and fight against terrorism must co-exist with federalism.

Sexual abuse of differently-abled common in India, says study

The disabled in India are subjected to widespread discrimination and inhuman treatment, particularly sexual abuse and torture, a European Union-sponsored study conducted by rights organisations said on Monday.

Shackling mentally ill patients and sexual abuse were some of the forms of inhuman treatment meted out to disabled in India, which has 21 million disabled people, it said.

According to the 2011 census, the disabled comprise 2.1 per cent of the population.

97 Rohingya Muslims die of hunger after 25 days stranded at sea

Ninety-seven Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar have died of hunger after being stranded at sea for 25 days, reports say.

Thirty three Muslim immigrants who were rescued off the coast of Sri Lanka last week said that they were on a boat heading to Malaysia when Thailand navy forces intercepted them and took the boat’s engine.

The survivors said they were left floating at sea for 25 days without water and food when Sri Lanka’s navy finally rescued them last Saturday about 250 miles off the country’s east coast, while the boat began sinking.

Yasin Bhaktal Planted One Of The Bombs In City !!

An important operative of Indian Mujahideen (IM), Yasin Bhaktal, is suspected to have planted one of the bombs in the twin blasts that rocked the crowded Dilsukhnagar in Hyderabad on February 21.

Disclosing this, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that the Intelligence Bureau had gathered relevant information in this regard. Yasin Bhaktal was the brain behind the terrorist attack in various cities including Delhi, Ahmedbad, Surat , Pune etc in the past.

‘Metro rail a reality in 3 yrs if various issues overcome’

The Kochi Metro rail project would be completed in three years if various issues like strikes and labour problem in Kerala are avoided, principal advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation E Sreedharan said here today. “The Metro rail project can be a reality within three years if various issues like strikes, shortage of sand and labour problem are avoided,” Sreedharan, also the principal advisor of the Kochi project, said. 2 Bangalore police officers in Hyd to collect blast info

Two city police officers are presently in Hyderabad to collect details of the twin blasts in that city and share terror-related information with their counterparts in that state, a top police official said today. “Two of our police officers are in Hyderabad to collect details of the twin blasts and share terror-related information with Andhra police. It is normal procedure where we go to the place of offence or incident like Hyderabad twin blasts,” Joint Commissioner of Police B Dayananda told PTI.

UN removes Osama bin Laden from sanctions list

Almost two years after his death at the hands of US special forces in Pakistan, a UN Security Council committee has removed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden from its sanctions list, although an order freezing any assets of the Islamist extremist remains in place.

Bin Laden had been subjected to a travel ban and asset freeze since he was listed by the Security Council al-Qaeda sanctions committee on January 25, 2001. He was shot and killed on May 2, 2011 by US forces who stormed his compound in Pakistan.
