Nitish Kumar targets Congress over diesel price hike

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday poked fun at the UPA government over its move to hike diesel prices every month, saying there can be no control on inflation till the Congress party is in power at the Centre.

“The government at the Centre takes pleasure in enjoying the prices. As long as the Congress Party will be in power, it would be quite difficult to control inflation,” he told the media here.

Cyber attacks on Western companies, governments and foreign-based dissidents that are believed to originate in China are growing, experts have warned.

According to one recent report, one in every three observed computer attacks in the third quarter of 2012 emanated from China.

The revelations emerge as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal claimed that their computer systems had been infiltrated by Chinese hackers.

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore Friday opposed capital punishment for rape saying death is neither the ultimate punishment nor a deterrent.

“I don`t think death the ultimate punishment. It is not a deterrent because when the person is committing the crime, he thinks that he is not going to be caught.

“In southern states of America where death penalty exists there is the highest crime rate there, so it is not really a deterrent.Rigorous imprisonment for entire life is a better way of punishing somebody,” said the actress here at the Kolkata Literary Meet here.

OU student murder case accused sent to judicial remand

Shiva Kumar, the prime accused in the murder case of Osmania University student Aruna, was remanded to 14-day judicial remand after he was produced before a court by the City Police on Saturday.

Shiva Kumar, who attempted suicide near Pune by jumping from a running train while being brought back to Hyderabad by the police on January 4, was shifted to Hyderabad this morning by the Chatrinaka Police. The doctors had amputated his right hand and left leg as they were badly damaged after he jumped off the train.

As per the schedule, the Train No 07490 Renigunta – Gorakpur Special Train will depart Renigunta at 08.45 AM on February 3 (Sunday) and arrive/depart Secunderabad 11.00 / 11. 25 PM on same day and will arrive Gorakhpur at 05.30 PM on February 5.

“I have got `Aa re pritam pyaare`, the superhit song from `Rowdy Rathore` in `ABCD…`. It was a surprise for Prabhudheva, who had directed `Rowdy Rathore`. I thought why not have something that he had created for his film and show it with a new twist in `ABCD…`,” Remo told IANS.

Iran unveils new indigenous fighter jet

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled on Saturday a new home-made fighter jet, local media reported.

Genetically modified herpes virus can block spread of cancer

Scientists have developed a genetically modified herpes virus which they claim can block the spread of breast and ovarian cancer.

Italian scientists believe the virus, which has been reprogrammed so it no longer harms humans, could form the basis of a potent new cancer treatment.

The `oncolytic` herpes simplex virus (HSV) attacks especially aggressive tumours that have an over-active Her-2 gene, the `Daily Mail` reported.
When the modified virus was injected into mice growing human breast and ovarian tumours, it strongly inhibited the spread of cancer cells.

‘Race 2’ collects Rs.79.6 crore in first week

Abbas-Mustan’s action thriller “Race 2” has raked in Rs.79.6 crore net in its opening week at the domestic box-office. The film is also minting money in the overseas market.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Ramesh Taurani of Tips Films, “Race 2” had earned Rs.51.35 crore over first weekend. In the following days, film earned Rs.7.5 crore Monday, Rs.6.5 crore Tuesday, Rs.5.75 crore Wednesday, Rs.5 crore Thursday and Rs.3.5 crore Friday.

US unemployment rate rises

The US unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent in January from 7.8 percent in December 2012, the US Labor Department said Friday.

Total non-farm payroll employment increased by 157,000 in January, with the private sector creating 166,000 jobs last month. Governments at all levels shed 9,000 jobs last month against the background of government spending cuts, reported Xinhua.

In January, the number of total unemployed Americans stood at 12.3 million, up from 12.2 million in December.

Not all dairy products beneficial in promoting bone health

Dairy intake, specifically milk and yogurt, is associated with higher bone mineral density (BMD) in the hip, but not the spine, a study led by Indian-origin researcher has found.

Cream, on the other hand, may be associated with lower BMD overall.

These findings suggest that not all dairy products are equally beneficial in promoting bone strength.

“Dairy foods provide several important nutrients that are beneficial for bone health,” lead author Shivani Sahni, Ph.D., Musculoskeletal Research Team, Institute for Aging Research (IFAR).

Soft drinks could be hard on your teeth, and cause dental decay, say researchers who looked at the consumption of sugary beverages and fluoridated water.

“There is growing scrutiny of sweet drinks, especially soft drinks, because of a range of detrimental health effects on adults and children,” says Jason Armfield from the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health, University of Adelaide`s School of Dentistry, who led the study, involving 16,800 children.

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan is likely to join the formal tripartite talks Saturday with Muslim groups in a bid to end the ban on his mega-budget multilingual film “Vishwaroopam”.

Kamal may join the formal talks later Saturday evening here, after the formal tripartite talks, which were scheduled Friday, were called off as the actor was in Mumbai.

“Apparently the Muslim organisations wanted Kamal to be present in the formal talks where they are likely to reach an amicable agreement,” a government source told IANS.

People taking long-acting pain killers for extended periods face a five-times greater risk of low testosterone, the male sex hormone, a new study says.

The study is the first to compare the use of short-acting opioids, which immediately release the drug, taken every four to six hours, and long-acting opioids, which slowly release the medication and are taken every eight to 12 hours.

Apple becomes largest mobile phone vendor in US: Report

Apple overtook Samsung to become the largest mobile phone vendor in the US in the fourth quarter of 2012, a report said Friday.

In its latest report, research firm Strategy Analytics estimated that Apple shipped 17.7 million mobile phones in the US for a record 34 percent share of the market in the fourth quarter of 2012, making the tech giant the No.1 mobile phone vendor by volume in the US for the first time ever.

Samsung, Apple’s arch-rival, shipped 16.8 million handsets for a 32 percent market share in the country, reported Xinhua.

`Petri dish lens` promises cure for eye diseases

Scientists at Monash University are closer to growing parts of the human eye in the lab and developing a cure for congenital sight impairment caused by lens damage.

Associate Professor Tiziano Barberi and Dr Isabella Mengarelli from the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University have, for the first time, derived and purified lens epithelium – the embryonic tissue from which the lens of the eye develops. The purity of the cells paves the way for future applications in regenerative medicine.

Single blood test to screen 13 types of cancers

A minimally invasive single blood test, onko-sure, screens 13 different types of cancers at the earliest stage of the disease, a health expert said Friday.

“One of the recent advances in the field of cancer screening is onko-sure which can screen as many as 13 different types of cancers including lung, colon, rectum, ovary, liver … and other cancers,” B.R. Das, president (research and innovation) of SRL Diagnostics said in a statement.

“Every person should take onko-sure minimal invasive test once a year,” he added.
