Vivek calls on Shankar Rao

Peddapally MP G Vivek called on former minster Dr P Shankar Rao at Care Hospital here on Saturday.

Dr Shankar Rao is undergoing treatment at Care Hospital since January 31 after he developed some health complications when he was taken into custody by the Cyberabad Police for questioning into a Green Fields land scam.

Vivek, who is also brother-in-law of Dr P Shanker Rao, had spent over half-an-hour in the hospital and enquired about Dr Shankar Rao’s health. (INN)

Expelled MLAs happy over PCC chief’s decision

The MLAs, who were expelled from the Congress party on Friday, have expressed happiness over the decision announced by PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana.

Talking to reporters here, Darsi MLA Sivaprasada Reddy said that his suspension was ridiculous as he has already resigned from the party long ago to join the YSR Congress party. He said many more MLAs from the Congress party would soon join the YSRCP. Kakinada MLA D Chandrashekhar Reddy too said that since he has already resigned, his expulsion was meaningless.

Veteran Senator John Kerry sworn in as Secretary of State

Veteran Senator John Kerry, who favours strong ties with India, was today sworn in as the US Secretary of State, replacing Hillary Clinton as America’s top diplomat.

Kerry, 69, was sworn in at a private ceremony, taking an oath administered by US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan.

“I was very honoured to be sworn in and very anxious to get to work,” Kerry told media, with his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry by his side.

Besides his wife, he was joined by daughter Vanessa, brother Cameron, and his Senate staff.

Jogi Ramesh accuses Botsa of destabilising Kiran Government

Congress MLA Jogi Ramesh on Saturday accused PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana of trying to create constitutional crisis in the State to dethrone Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Talking to reporters here, Ramesh said the expulsion of nine MLAs from the party has brought the Congress Government into minority and it would fail to prove its strength on the floor of the House, if asked by the Governor. Alleging that Botsa has triggered a new political storm within the Congress party, he said Botsa himself was trying to capture the top posts by destabilising Kiran Kumar Reddy.

The State Government again sending the once rejected names of Information Commissioners shows that the ruling party and main opposition TDP have a clear understanding on the issue and the deal was fixed for mutual benefit much earlier, YSR Congress has said.

Ingredients:

1/2 Tin Condensed Milk
2 cup Fine Wheat Flour (Maida)
1 cup Butter
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Sodium Bicarbonate (Khaane Wala Soda)
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
1 Tin Peach
200 gms Cream
2 tblsp Jam
4 tblsp Icing Sugar
1 cup Cashewnut (Kaju)

How to make peach cake:
Open the peach tin and separate the liquid and the peaches.
Except for 4 – 5 peaches cut the rest into small pieces.

Troopers arrested for harassing NCC cadets on train

Nine troopers of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for harassing women cadets of the National Cadet Corps from Meghalaya on board a train, police said Saturday.

The SSB soldiers on board the Bihar-bound Saptakranti Express barged into the compartment reserved for women at Chandauli, some 350 km from here, late Friday, and began harassing the NCC cadets who were returning after participating in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi.

Coriander-Chilli Chicken Meatballs

Ingredients

900g (2 lb) minced chicken
100g (4 oz) dried breadcrumbs
4 spring onions, finely sliced
1 tablespoon ground coriander
½ bunch fresh coriander, chopped
4 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
oil for pan frying

Instructions

In a large bowl, mix together the chicken and breadcrumbs. Season with spring onion, ground coriander, fresh coriander, chilli sauce and lemon juice; mix well.

Using damp hands, form mixture into evenly shaped balls that are either small enough to eat with your fingers, or large enough to use as burgers.

Relief for residents as night temp rise in Kashmir Valley

Residents of Kashmir got much needed relief from the two-month long chilly weather as the night temperature rose by several degrees and weatherman forecasting light rainfall or snow over the next few hours.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, rose by nearly five degrees to settle at 3.1 degrees Celsius last night, an official of the MET Department said.

Harvard punishes students ensnared in cheating scandal

Over 60 students at the Harvard University have been forced to withdraw and several others disciplined after being implicated in one of the largest cheating scandals that shook the Ivy League institution last year.

Dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Michael Smith said more than half of the 125 cases heard by Harvard College’s Administrative Board resulted in “required to withdraw” verdicts.

About half of the remaining cases resulted in disciplinary probation, while the rest resulted in no disciplinary action, Smith said.

Accused in girl student’s murder sent to jail

A city court Saturday sent Shiva Kumar, the main accused in the murder of a 23-year-old student of Osmania University, to judicial custody for 14 days.

Shiva Kumar, who had attempted suicide by jumping from a train when the police were bringing him to Hyderabad last month, was finally brought here Saturday and produced before a magistrate at his residence. The accused was later shifted to Chanchalguda Central Jail.

Aruna, a post graduate student, was found murdered at the residence of her friend Shiva Kumar at Chatrinaka in the Old City of Hyderabad Dec 31.

Normal monsoon will decrease in the future due to the impact of impending climate change, a research conducted by various bodies, has said.

The findings of a research project, ClimaRice, jointly conducted by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, International Pacific Research Centre, Hawaii and Bioforsk, Norway revealed climate change would affect agriculture by various means, including rains, droughts and floods, IPRC representative, Dr H Annamalai told reporters today.

Heavy snowfall likely in Kashmir Feb 5-6

Kashmir Valley residents have been warned of heavy to very heavy snowfall at many places in the Valley on Feb 5-6 with the local weather office Friday issuing an adverse weather advisory.

Sonam Lotus, director of the regional meteorological office, told IANS that the weather is likely to become cloudy from Saturday evening onwards.

“Heavy to very heavy snowfall is likely to occur at many places in the Valley on Feb 5 and Feb especially in the Pir Panjal Mountain range. This is likely to disrupt road and air traffic during the period,” he said.

8 soldiers among 20 killed in Taliban attack on Pak check post

Dozens of Taliban fighters attacked a security forces check post in Pakistan’s restive northwest today, triggering a fierce clash that left 12 militants and eight paramilitary personnel dead.

Security forces foiled the raid on the isolated check post, located at Serai Norang area in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, after intense fighting.

The militants, who had sophisticated weapons, launched the attack shortly before 4 am.

‘Columbia mission crew did not know they might die’

NASA has revealed that the Columbia crew, which included first Indian woman in space Kalpana Chawla, were not told the shuttle had been damaged during its launch and that they might not survive re-entry.

The revelation came as the seven astronauts who died were remembered at a public memorial service at Florida on the 10th anniversary of the disaster.

The shuttle was returning from a routine 16-day science mission when it broke apart over Texas.

According to the Daily Mirror, Wayne Hale, who later became space shuttle programme manager, has blogged about the fateful day.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has bagged the first prize in the Garden Festival held by Horticulture department. Out of 126 entries in the competition, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport won the first prize. It also bagged best traffic and residential township awards. The GMR landscape consists of 16000 trees, 17 lakh shrubs and 1.8 lakh square meters of lawns.

Officials of department of Horticulture Andhra Pradesh had visited airport on 12th January. Dr. M Jagan Mohan IAS Commissioner of Horticulture gave away the award to the officials of Shamsabad airport.

‘Ozone thinning has changed ocean circulation’

A hole in the Antarctic ozone layer has changed the way waters in the southern oceans mix, which scientists say could impact global climate change.

The situation has the potential to alter the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, scientists say.

In a study, published in the journal Science, Darryn W Waugh and his team show that subtropical intermediate waters in the southern oceans have become “younger” as the upwelling, circumpolar waters have gotten “older” – changes that are consistent with the fact that surface winds have strengthened as the ozone layer has thinned.

A CBI court Saturday ordered a fresh probe into the sensational 2004 Kaviyoor suicide, in which five members of a family were found dead in their home, to find out if any politicians were involved.

The bodies were found near Thiruvalla, 130 km from here.

The case hit headlines then because the dead included a 14-year-old girl Anekha, who was allegedly sexually exploited after a family friend Latha Nair promised her roles in films and TV serials.

Delhi gang-rape: Court to frame charges against five accused

A fast-track court here is likely to frame charges Saturday against the five men who brutally assaulted, murdered and gang-raped a young woman in Delhi Dec 16, who died 13 days later in Singapore.

The counsels for accused and prosecution have concluded their arguments on charges against five of the six accused in the gang-rape.

The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) declared the sixth accused a minor last month, and his case will be heard by the board.

Euro crisis not over: German finance minister

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Friday warned of complacency about the improvements made in eurozone, saying that the crisis is not over.

Speaking at a panel discussion at the 49th Munich Security Conference, Schaeuble said, “I think the euro crisis has not yet come to an end.”

“It would be wrong if we believe that all problems had been solved,” he said, adding that it would be a bad message to say the crisis is over, reported Xinhua.
