Darul Uloom cook commits suicide

A 19-year-old cook working at the Darul Uloom Deoband Islamic seminary here allegedly committed suicide on Saturday, police said.

Asif cut his throat using a butchers’ knife, SSP DC Mishra said.

His body was found by a cleaner, the officer said, adding that he was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigations are on.

One nabbed in Mumbai’s Rs.1 crore e-banking fraud

One accused was arrested Saturday and a hunt launched for 11 others in connection with a Rs.1 crore illegal transfer from a businessman’s bank account here, police said.

“We have arrested one person in this connection and are on the lookout for another 11 who are suspected to be involved in this fraud,” Additional Police Commissioner (East) Quaiser Khalid told IANS.

The financial crime – considered to be among the biggest online banking and business fruads – took place Thursday in Mulund in north Mumbai.

Israeli security forces used force Saturday to disperse Palestinian activists attempting to set up a camp in West Bank in protest of Israeli expansion of settlement, witnesses and medics said, reported Xinhua.

Dozens of Israeli soldiers used tear gas and stun grenades Saturday afternoon to disperse dozens of Palestinian activists who were erecting a “tent village” near the West Bank village of Burin to protest Israeli plans to confiscate the land for settlement expansions, witnesses said.

Medics said more than 20 activists fainted after inhaling tear gas and were treated at the scene.

GHMC employees threaten to dumb garbage at Darulsalaam

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union on Saturday threatened that it would protest by dumping the garbage at MIM headquarters Darulsalaam and in front of Mayor Majid Hussain’s residence if the contract with Ramky was not cancelled.

Talking to reporters here, GHMEU president U Gopal said that several unions were against the contract given to Ramky for lifting of garbage as hundreds of people would lose their livelihood. He demanded that the contract be cancelled with immediate effect.

Teacher held for molesting girl students

A 30-year-old primary school teacher was arrested for molesting half a dozen students over several months, police said on Saturday.

“Pradeep Kumar was arrested from Rohini area in north Delhi on Friday,” said a police officer.

The accused, a contract employee of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, was teaching at a civic school at Zamroodpur in Greater Kailash in south Delhi, he said.

Man axes mother to death for refusing money to buy liquor

A young man killed his mother for not giving money to buy liquor at village Nagour under Nateran police staion jurisdiction, about 40 km from the district headquarters, late on Friday, police said on Saturday.

Police officer Gopal Singh Dhakad told reporters that Ranveer Maihar (25) axed his mother Munni Bai (45) to death when she refused to give him money for liquor.

Police have arrested Ranveer and registered a murder case against him.

Palestinians erect tent village to protest settlement expansion

Palestinian activists erected “tent village” to the north of a West Bank village Saturday to protest against Israeli plans to confiscate the land for settlement expansion.

The activists pitched eight tents and decorated them with Palestinian flags in the mountainous area which the Israeli army has announced a closed zone for Palestinians months ago, reported Xinhua.

The village is located near Nablus city and the activists say 80 percent of its land was used or allocated for the use of Jewish settlement activities.

Man finds solid whale vomit worth 100,000 pounds

An unemployed man in Britain found a “stinky yellow rock” on a beach and was surprised to find it was solidified whale vomit reportedly worth 100,000 pounds.

Ken Wilman’s boxer dog discovered the object in Morecambe, Lancashire, The Sun reported.

The 48-year-old man did not have a clue what it was, but a check on the internet revealed it was a rare piece of ambergris, a valuable ingredient used in perfume.

The vomit hardens after it is ejected by sperm whales.

Contact lens fungus damages British woman’s eye

A 42-year-old British woman has claimed her left eye was damaged by a fungus after she wore disposable contact lenses for a day.

Jacqueline Stone, a maths teaching assistant from Essex, spent 17 weeks in hospital after wearing the lenses, The Sun reported.

The woman had bought the “all-day comfort” lenses online.

“They felt uncomfortable all day. When I took them out, the left one had stuck to my eye,” she told the daily.

She said her vision became blurred and she was given drops by her doctor.

Government ready to review sexual crime ordinance

After the union cabinet approved an ordinance to effect changes in laws against sexual crimes, the government Saturday said it was open to consultation and changes after women’s groups urged the president not to sign it.

“Justice (J.S.) Verma committee and public opinion were both of the view that something needs to be done with a sense of urgency. All you can do is when the parliament is not in the session is to bring an ordinance, which is what we have done,” said External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on the sidelines of a function here.

30 killed in Taliban attack on Pak check post

Dozens of heavily-armed Taliban militants attacked a security forces check post in Pakistan’s restive northwest on Saturday, triggering fierce fighting that killed 30 people, including six paramilitary personnel and 12 civilians.

Security forces foiled the raid on the isolated check post, located at Serai Norang area in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, after an intense gun battle that continued for over three years.

The militants, who were armed with rocket-propelled grenades, launched the assault shortly before 4 am.

Omar tells police to probe threats to girls’ rock band

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday ordered police to investigate threats received by a local girls’ band and provide adequate security to its members.

The Valley’s only girls’ rock band “Pragaash’ was started by some local girls last year.

In December 2012, it participated in a competition called the “Battle of Bands”, finishing third.

“After our participation in the ‘Battle of Bands’, we started receiving threats on social media sites. Our parents told us to give up the exercise,” said a band member here.

Mamata opposes trade union bandh

The West Bengal government will not allow forcible enforcement of the two-day bandh by trade unions, to be held later this month, which would only ‘aggravate’ the economic situation of the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday.

The economic situation of the state is in a mess because of the 34 years of Left Front ‘misrule’ and bandhs led to economic loss and ruined the state, she told a rally here.

Open to changes in sexual crimes ordinance: Salman Khurshid
