Whatmore said he has not witnessed such incredible pace bowling ever before, reports Sport24.

Dale Steyn was the main destroyer, taking six for eight in 8.1 overs as Pakistan slipped below their previous lowest total of 53 against Australia in Sharjah in 2002/03.

England beat India in Women’s World Cup

England beat India by 32 runs in a Women’s World Cup encounter at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Sunday, a game that was marked by contrasting centuries by England captain Charlotte Edwards and India’s Harmanpreet Kaur.

Replying to England’s total of 272 for the loss of eight wickets, India scored 240 all out in their alloted 50 overs.

A team from a university in Chile has created the world’s first vaccine for alcoholism that could reduce the number of deaths due to the addiction, a media report said.

Around 2.5 million people die each year from alcohol-related problems, the Daily Express reported.

A monthly injection will almost eliminate cravings, said the team from the University of Chile in Santiago.

The vaccine will be tested on humans at the end of 2013.

In early trials, it has reduced alcohol intake by more than 90 percent.

Three Indians held in UAE for smuggling drugs

Three Indians have been arrested in Abu Dhabi when they tried to smuggle around 130 kg of poppy seeds into the UAE.

Customs inspectors at the Abu Dhabi international airport suspected three passengers on a flight that arrived from India.

On inspection, they found 52 bags of narcotic poppy seeds, weighing 52 kg, from one suspect.

The other two Indians were found to carry poppy seeds weighing 35.1 kg and 41.1 respectively.

Hamad A. Hurr Al Suwaidi, chairman of the Department of Finance, praised the custom personnel for foiling the smuggling attempt.

Sixty-year old man held for raping teenage girl

A sixty-year old man allegedly raped a 19-year old before dumping her at a deserted place from where she was rescued in an unconscious state two days later, police said today.

A contractor, H Abubakar of Hagaribommanahalli, was arrested today on a complaint from the parents of the girl, who has been hospitalised and is yet to regain consciousness.

Advocate General meets Governor

Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy on Sunday met Governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan.

It is believed that he was summoned to advise the Governor on the matter related to the appointment of Information Commissioners. The State Government has sent the four names eelier rejected by the Governor. A legal opinion in this regard was sought, it is understood.

The Governor had earlier rejected four of the eight names and asked the government to reconsider as the four persons have political affiliations. As the government has repeated the same names, legal opinion was sought in the matter.

68,000 rape cases in 2009-11; only 16,000 convicted

Nearly 68,000 rape cases were registered across the country during 2009-11 but only 16,000 rapists were sentenced to prison, presenting a dismal picture of conviction of sexual offenders. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 24,206 rape cases were registered in India in 2011 but only 5,724 people were convicted for the crime.
Similarly, in 2010, 22,172 rape cases were registered while the number of convicted persons for the crime was 5,632.

A total of 21,397 rape cases were registered in 2009 but only 5,316 persons could be convicted.

No threat to Kiran Government, claims Sailajanath

Primary Education Minister S Sailajanath on Sunday claimed that there was no threat to the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government till 2014.

Talking to reporters in Markapuram of Prakasam district, Sailajanath dismissed reports that the Congress Government came in minority due to the expulsion of nine MLAs. He said that the government still enjoys majority in the House and there was no threat to Kiran Kumar Reddy Government.

Britain’s latest weapon: A palm-sized drone

Britain has launched a tiny, palm-sized remote-controlled aircraft with three cameras as its latest weapon in the fight against the Taliban.

Codenamed “Black Hornet”, the drone fits easily into the palm and looks like a toy helicopter, the Daily Mail reported.

The eight-inch-long plastic moulded drone has three cameras hidden inside its nose and weighs 15 grams.

It has a smooth grey body and twin black rotors, and stays airborne thanks to a small rechargeable battery.

Hurley’s car stolen

Actress Elizabeth Hurley’s car has been stolen while she went to shop in Mayfair here.

The 47-year-old had parked her black Audi on the road and went to shop, but did not find it when she came back after four hours’ shopping, reports thesun.co.uk.

The theft took place Jan 31 and Hurley registered a complaint at the Scotland Yard, but no arrests have been made till Feb 2. The car has not been found and enquiries are going on, police said.

1,000 British doctors charged with alcohol abuse

Doctor heal thyself. Over 1,000 doctors in Britain have faced disciplinary hearings for alcohol and drug misuse over the past five years, a media report said.

Figures from the General Medical Council show that 1,356 doctors have been assessed for alcohol and drug addiction or mental health problems over the same period, the Daily Express reported.

As many as 544 doctors were found to have drinking problems and 598 were diagnosed with mental health issues.

Experts said this was likely to be the tip of an iceberg because most such doctors do not seek help.

President signs ordinance on sexual assault

President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday gave his assent to the ordinance on sexual harassment that had been approved by the Cabinet on Friday. The President signed it and it will now be tabled before Parliament for approval. The Parliament has to clear it before six months for the ordinance to become a law. The government has assured that more changes will be made to the ordinance once it is referred to Parliament.

20-year-old raped for months by stepfather

A 20-year-old girl was allegedly raped repeatedly by her stepfather for several months in the Mall area here, police said today.

The accused had threatened the girl with dire consequences if she told anyone about the matter and raped her several times over the past four to five months, police said.
The girl’s mother, also the wife of the accused, registered a complaint with the police, following which he was arrested yesterday, they said.

The victim’s mother had married the accused after her first marriage had broken up. She had two daughters from her first husband, police said.

Blast on railway track in Kokrajhar, no injury

Passengers of the Howrah-Guwahati down Garibrath Express had a providential escape on Sunday when a powerful bomb exploded on the railway tracks minutes after it passed Goabari in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

There was no casualty or injury.

The bomb suspected to have been planted by the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) exploded at 1.10 AM two minutes after the train passed the area between Gossaigaon and Fakiragram, police said.

The blast blew away three feet of railway track and left a two feet deep crater at the spot, they said.

An outlawed leftist group in Turkey has claimed responsibility for the recent suicide bombing of the US Embassy in Ankara, which left a security guard dead and seven wounded. According to Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler, law-enforcement authorities had information that the suicide bomber, a Turkish national, was a known member of the outlawed leftist group, the Revolutionary People”s Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, and had been previously jailed on terrorism charges, the Wall Street Journal reports.
