President promulgates ordinance on crime against women

Two days after it was cleared by the Union Cabinet, an ordinance on sexual violence against women under which rape that leads to death of the victim can now attract death penalty was today promulgated by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The President has given his assent to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2013, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

Six held for circulating fake currency

Six persons were arrested from Abids here on charge of trying to circulate fake euro notes with a face value of about Rs seven crore, police said.

Accused Syed Subhan, a tailor from Guntur district, who resides in Mumbai, along with his five associates, were looking for prospective customers to sell the counterfeit euro currency for a sum ranging between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh when they were nabbed, Abids Inspector Guru Raghvendra said.

Two booked for rape

Two persons were today booked for raping a girl for two days in Basti Khanuwali area of the district, police said.

On the complaint made by victim’s family and the Sarpanch of Kotwal village, a probe was carried out by a police team, after which a case was registered against the two alleged persons, SSP Varinder Pal Singh said.

Accused Ashwani was arrested, while efforts were being made to catch Rafi, the police official said.

According to the complaint, the girl had an affair with a youth and she went to meet him near Satiawala village on on
January 30.

VHP protest stops Kingfisher Ultra Fashion Week

Malala undergoes two successful surgeries: Hospital

Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban for promoting girls’ education, has undergone two successful operations to attach a titanium plate and cochlear implant, doctors said today.

Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital said a titanium plate and cochlear implant were successfully attached in two operations yesterday.

Malala was attacked by the Taliban in October after campaigning for girls’ rights to education.

A bullet was removed from her head by surgeons in Pakistan, before she was flown to the UK for specialised treatment.

Panetta defends US response to Benghazi attack

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta today defended the administration’s response to last year’s terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that claimed the life of the US ambassador to Libya.

“This is not 911. You cannot just simply call and expect within two minutes to have a team in place. It takes time. That’s the nature of it. Our people are there. They are in position to move, but we’ve got to have good intelligence that gives us a heads up that something is going to happen,” the Defence Secretary told CNN in an interview.

Hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference on Sunday expressed surprise over Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s support for the Valley’s only all-girls rock band, saying there is no room to nourish western culture and immoral values in the state.

75 per cent voting in Gujarat panchayat polls

About 75 per cent voter turnout was recorded on Sunday in the elections of 1,161 village panchayats in Gujarat, a top officer said.

“As per the information received, an average 75 per cent voting has been registered for 1,161 village panchayats in 22 districts which went to poll today,” Incharge state election commissioner PS Shah said.

Counting is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

Farmer beheaded in Rajasthan

A headless body of a farmer was found in a farm in Nela village near here this afternoon, police said.

Heera Lal (55) was brutally murdered by some unidentified persons who beheaded him, In-charge of Goverdhan Vilas police station Attaurrahaman said.

Enraged over the gruesome killing, the family members refused to hand over the body for post mortem.

They also refused to perform the final rites till the head was recovered. Efforts were being made to trace the head, the police official said.

Garbage truck rams into car, three critically injured

Three car occupants were critically injured after a speeding truck of a civic agency rammed into their vehicle here, police said Sunday.

The garbage truck of a city municipal corporation jumped a red light and hit the car Saturday night in central Delhi’s Daryaganj area, police said. The truck driver fled from the spot.

The car was dragged a few metres by the truck after the collision, police said.

Car driver Farhaan and his friends Waqar and Harsh were injured. Farhaan and Waqar are in a hospital in a critical condition, a police officer said.

Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV programs, was arrested in November on
charges of killing the girl. The reports said he questioned the child’s virginity.

President gives assent to ordinance to fight sexual crimes

President Pranab Mukherjee Sunday gave his approval to an ordinance that awards stricter punishment for sexual crimes against women, including death sentence in rare instances. Women’s groups are, however, planning a protest against the ordinance, which they term as a “big joke”.

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013, was passed by the cabinet Friday. It is based largely on former Supreme Court Chief Justice J.S. Verma’s 631-page report.

Berlin commemorating 80th anniversary of Hitler’s rise to power with series of exhibitions

Berlin will be hosting a series of exhibitions, lectures, art installations and events throughout the year to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power.

A new exhibit, ‘Berlin 1933 – Road to dictatorship’ opened at the Topography of Terror open-air documentation center in Berlin this week.

Most of the city’s events began on January 30 and will end on November 9, CNN reports.

Cameron set for talks with Pakistan, Afghanistan leaders

British Prime Minister David Cameron will meet the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan this weekend as part of moves to prevent a Taliban resurgence when foreign troops leave, and to promote regional peace and stability.

Cameron will dine with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan”s President Asif Ali Zardari at his country retreat Chequers in Buckinghamshire, southeast England, on Sunday, reports the Daily Times.

Cameron will then hold the first in-depth top-level talks with both leaders and their key officials on Monday.

Pak Punjab CM Shahbaz accuses Musharraf of lying about Kargil operation

The chief minister of Pakistan”s Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, has accused former dictator General (retired) Pervez Musharraf of lying about the Kargil operation.

Sharif said Musharraf is responsible for the destruction of Pakistan and history will never forgive him. He added that Musharraf”s decisions wreaked destruction to Pakistan in the form of suicide attacks and terrorism, reports The Nation.
