Engineering student attempts suicide for Telangana

An engineering student on Monday attempted suicide reportedly in protest against delay in formation of separate Telangana.

According to police, Niraj Bharadwaj, a student of Bits College at Gudepparu, set himself ablaze at his residence in Yadav Nagar of Hanumkonda mandal. He was immediately rushed to MGM Hospital where his condition is said to be critical. His friends claimed that Niranjan resorted to the extreme step for the cause of Telangana. (INN)

MIM should accept or condemn Akbar’s speech: Niranjan

PCC General Secretary G Niranjan on Monday ridiculed MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s contention that media has distorted the speech of MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Talking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan here, Niranjan said that the Hyderabad MP was neither defending Akbar’s speech nor condemning it. He said Akbaruddin Owaisi speech was shown live by their mouthpiece 4TV and a report was also published in Etemaad Daily. However, he said now Asaduddin Owaisi was trying to escape from the same by blaming the media.

ED slaps Rs 98.5 crore notice on Rajasthan Royals

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has slapped a penalty notice of approximately Rs 100 crore against IPL team Rajasthan Royals for allegedly violating forex laws in its business operations.

The agency, which issued the penalty notice after a two years of investigations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), has sent out three separate notices to the IPL franchise totalling to Rs 98.5 crore plus some other similar notices earlier, sources said.

Minor girl raped by teacher in school toilet

A Class III girl student was allegedly raped by a guest teacher in a school toilet at a village in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, police said today.

On February 2, when the girl was sitting alone in the class room of Naveen Government Primary School at Lato village here, the guest teacher – Prem Kumar (22) – asked her to go to the toilet for cleaning her running nose, police said.

Youth attempts to rape mentally challenged girl

A youth allegedly tried to rape a mentally-challenged teenaged girl at Surbra village in the district’s Narwana subdivision, police said today.

Mahavir dragged the victim to his house while she was passing the area and tried to rape her, police said.

But her mother, who was nearby, heard the victim’s cries and rushed to her rescue, they said, adding, the accused fled from the spot.

High court notice to Congress, BJP on foreign funding

The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to the Congress and the BJP on a plea seeking directive for a CBI or SIT probe for allegedly taking donations from subsidiaries of Britain-based Vedanta Group.

A division bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Indermeet Kaur sought response from both political parties within three weeks and posted the matter for March 19.

The court earlier sought response from the home ministry and the Election Commission saying it will go through their responses before asking the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to respond.

‘Vishwaroopam’ to hit theatres Feb 7 in Tamil Nadu

A day after the two-week ban was revoked on the controversial film “Vishwaroopam”, Kamal Haasan Monday announced that his film will hit theatres Feb 7.

“The film will release all over Tamil Nadu on Thursday, Feb 7,” said Kamal in a statement.

Following the tripartite talks on Feb 2 in the presence of Tamil Nadu Home Secretary R. Rajagopal, Kamal had agreed to edit a few scenes from his controversial film, paving the way to ending of the protests by Muslim organisations.

3 Trapped Under Debris in a Wall Collapse

Three persons were trapped under the debris when a wall of a dilapidated building collapsed in P & T Colony of Dilshuknagar here this morning.

The mishap took place while a dilapidated building was being demolished for reconstruction when a wall suddenly collapsed trapping three persons. On information the police swung into action and with the help of the local people could retrieve one of the trapped persons and efforts are still continuing to rescue the two others still under debris. The person who was rescued was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Karnataka financial status sound, says governor

With tax revenues doubling over the last five years, the financial status of Karnataka is sound, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj said Monday.

“Tax revenue is 10 percent of the gross state domestic product (GSDP), which is among the highest in the country,” Bhardwaj said in his customary joint address to the state legislature.

Noting that the plan size had increased by 2.5 times during the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, Bhardwaj said per capita plan expenditure of Rs.6,810 was among the highest in India.

Acting swiftly after government lifted the ban on his Tamil movie “Vishwaroopam”, Kamal Haasan on Monday withdrew his petition before the Madras high court challenging the ban, a move that could see the early release of his mega-budget movie.

Justice S Rajeswaran before whom the matter came up allowed the actor and government to withdraw pleas after they expressed their desire to do so following a compromise between Haasan and Muslim outfits, which had opposed it claiming some scenes offended their sentiments.

A day after fatwa, Kashmir’s all-girl band calls it quits

Kashmir lost its only all-girls rock band on Monday as its three teenage members decided to call it quits, a day after the Grand Mufti issued a fatwa terming singing as un-Islamic and asked them to abandon it.

Although the girls have maintained silence over the issue, sources close to them said, they have decided to quit singing and music.

The girls had defied convention by stepping into the male-dominated field but faced online threats and abuses from conservative sections of the society.

The Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad on Sunday issued a decree terming singing un-Islamic.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who arrived here on Monday met Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is in-charge for state affairs.

It is understood that Azad expressed unhappiness about the style of functioning of the State Government.

Delhi was unhappy particularly the way manner in which the state government dealt with the cases of Akbarudin Owaisi and Dr P Shankar Rao.

The study by University of California-Berkeley biologists represents a major advance in understanding the molecular mechanisms behind aging, paving the way for the development of targeted treatments for age-related degenerative diseases.

CWG scam: Court frames charges against Suresh Kalmadi & others

A Delhi court today framed charges against sacked CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi and nine others for allegedly cheating, conspiring and causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to the exchequer in a Games-related corruption case.

Special CBI Judge Ravinder Kaur framed charges under various provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act against Kalmadi and other accused, including OC Secretary General Lalit Bhanot, in the case.
