The Mumbai police today was left red-faced after the sessions court refused to charge the alleged murderer of city-based lawyer with attempting to rape her, though it charged the accused with molestation. “The main charge is murder and we are hopeful that he will be convicted under that charge,” said a senior police officer, confirming the development. The Supreme Court today decided to examine the constitutional validity of the provision giving the definition of juvenile in the Juvenile Justice Act which treats a person as a minor till he or she attains the age of 18 years.

The apex court accepted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which challenges some of the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Iranian minister optimistic on US’s new approach

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi Monday said he was “optimistic” that the new US administration was shifting its approach to his country’s disputed nuclear programme.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari Monday promised to exert efforts to reach a peace settlement for Afghanistan within six months, following a trilateral meeting hosted by Britain here.

All sides concerned should “take all necessary measures to achieve the goal of a peace settlement (on Afghanistan) over the next six months,” Xinhua quoted a statement released by British Prime Minister David Cameron’s office as saying.
