Another death due to swine flu in Delhi, 34 new cases detected

Another person died of swine flu today in the national capital and 34 new cases have been detected with the deadly H1N1 virus, taking the total number of cases this season to 834.

The person, who was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital in a critical condition, succumbed to swine flu
today, doctors said.

With the death, the number of people succumbing to the virus went up to 12 this season.

According to hospital sources, 34 fresh cases were reported today.

Delhi government has designated 23 hospitals in the city for treatment of the ailment.

Another SI murder accused Sheikh Moktar arrested

Sheikh Moktar, one of the accused in the sub inspector killing case in violence in Garden Reach area in south-west part of city on February 12, was arrested this evening, a senior CID official said.

We have arrested Sheikh Moktar from Howrah station area this evening. He was apprehended with one of his associates.

He will be brought to the CID headquaters and interrogated,”IG CID Vineet Goyal told PTI.

Kolkata Police Sub-Inspector Tapas Choudhury was killed during violence between Congress and Trinamool
supporters near a college in Garden Reach on February 12.

NCP to counter Raj Thackeray with an eye on Mum assembly seats

To expand its base in Mumbai which constitutes 36 assembly seats, NCP has decided to target MNS and its chief Raj Thackeray who has been targeting NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar during his recent state
rallies, sources said.

Ajit Pawar’s political strategy for the 2014 assembly elections is to ensure that the NCP improves its base in
Mumbai and Vidarbha, to make it the single largest party in Maharashtra, so that he can bid for the Chief Minister’s post.

Forensic Medicine Prof designated ‘Police Surgeon’

The head of the department of Forensic Medicine of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital at Barpeta in Assam has been designated as ‘Police Surgeon’.

He has been designated as ‘Police Surgeon’ for the smooth functioning of post-mortem examinations at the hospital
from March 1, 2013, an official release said.

DCP summoned on plea for FIR against Transport Min, officials

A Delhi court today directed DCP Crime Branch to appear before it in connection with a plea seeking registration of an FIR against city Transport Minister and others alleging that the December 16 gangrape incident had occurred due to their “corrupt” activities.

DCP Crime Branch is directed to take required action and appear in the court on February 27,” Special Judge Sangita
Dhingra Sehgal said.

The court passed the order displeased with three different reports furnished before it regarding the status of the
complaint made by RTI activist Vivek Garg.

Omar says he met PM for return of Afzal Guru’s body

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and also met him to request for return of the body of Afzal Guru but did not make this public since he wanted to avoid “playing politics” on the issue.

Omar said this on a day when Opposition PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed released a letter he wrote to the Prime
Minister demanding that the body of the Parliament attack convict be returned to his family for proper burial.

Bomb hurled

Some unidentified persons today hurled a crude bomb outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer of Nagaland’s Phek district, where sealed EVMs were stored in a strong room for counting of polls on Thursday.

Phek SP Deepali R Masirkar said the crude bomb was hurled from the main road towards the DC’s office at Phek but the
blast did not cause any damage.

She said the strong-room where the EVMs from five constituencies were stored was safe as the bomb was hurled on
the opposite end.

No arrest has been made so far, Masirkar said.

26/11 Investigation Officer seeks VRS citing personal reasons

The investigating officer in the 26/11 terror attack case, who had helped build a water-tight case against Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, has sought voluntary retirement on the ground that he is
“tired and decided to take rest”, police said today.

Senior Inspector Ramesh Mahale (56), who is heading the Crime branch’s unit I of Mumbai Police, put in his papers last week after 35 years of meritorious service.

Mahale refused to meet media persons when they went to his office to know the reason for leaving the police force
abruptly.

Railways to borrow Rs 15,103 cr from market in current fiscal

The railways will borrow Rs 15,103 crore from the market in 2013-14, marginally higher than Rs 15,000 crore borrowings in the current financial year.

The estimated market borrowing would help the railways to finance its highest ever plan outlay of Rs 63,363 crore.

Former bank manager, 3 others given jail term in fraud case

A former branch manager of Central Bank of India and three others were sentenced to three years in jail by a Special CBI Court here today.

The former branch manager R S Ayer, working in the Bank’s Shahpura Branch, had disbursed housing loans worth Rs 51.77
lakh in a dubious manner in connivance with four private persons, CBI sources said.

After getting a complaint in this regard, CBI registered a case against Ayer and others on March 21, 2001, for
fraudulently sanctioning housing loan worth Rs 51.77 lakh.

Rail budget reflects UPA’s non-performance: Narendra Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today termed the railway budget as “anti- development” and said that it reflects the “non-performance of the UPA government”.

Ranbaxy Q4 loss at Rs 492.44 cr, hit by atorvastatin recall

Drug major Ranbaxy Laboratories today reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 492.44 crore for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2012, mainly on account of recall of its cholesterol lowering drug atorvastatin calcium tablets in the US market and currency fluctuation.

The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 2,982.76 crore during the corresponding quarter of previous
fiscal.

During the period under review, consolidated net sales of the company stood at Rs 2,670.80 crore as against Rs 3,752.01 crore for the same quarter last fiscal.

MP govt official held while accepting bribe

A Superintendent of Land Records Office was today caught red-handed by Lokayukta Police while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Acting on a tip-off, Lokayukta Police caught the superintendent, L J Ahirwar, while he was accepting Rs 10,000
from Suresh Jaiswal for making amendments in the map of a land, official sources said.

Ahirwar was subsequently arrested and a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was
registered against him, they said.

The Land-Records Office is situated in the district Collectorate premises.

One jawan killed as insurgents explode bomb in Manipur

In the first major attack on Army personnel this year in Manipur, insurgents today exploded a powerful remote-controlled bomb, killing one jawan and injuring three others in interior Churachandpur district.

The banned Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) claimed responsibility of the attack, officials said.

The bomb, attached to a roadside culvert, went off at about 6.40 am when personnel of Gorkha Rifles were on patrol
duty in the area. A sniffer dog of the army was also killed in the blast, they said.

HC reunites minor girl with her parents

The Bombay High Court today ordered city police to hand over the custody of a minor girl, who had eloped with her boyfriend in 2010, to her parents.

The girl and her boyfriend were produced before the Court today by the police.

The division bench of Justices Naresh Patil and A R Joshi ordered the police to take the boyfriend — who is major — into custody.

Earlier during the proceedings, the judges asked the girl whether she would like to go back to parents, to which she replied in the affirmative.

To run away was a mistake, she said.

Youth held for murdering couple

A youth was arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his neighbourhood couple at Neemkheda area here, apparently over an old dispute, police said today.

The victims are identified as Jitendra Dixit and his wife Laxmi, they said.

Police said the victims were stabbed and clubbed to death allegedly by the son of their neighbour, along with his
accomplice, while they were taking a walk last night outside their house.

After initial probe police stumbled upon the dispute the victims were having with their neighbour and subsequently
picked up the suspect.

Gram panchayat secy held in bribery case

A gram panchayat secretary was held by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly accepting a bribe, a press release said.

M C T V S Suguneswara Rao Patnaik, panchayat secretary of K Kotapadu gram panchyat in Visakhapatnam district was
caught red-handed by the ACB at the complainant’s house when he accepted a bribe of Rs 15,000 for issuance of a death
certificate.

The accused officer would be arrested and produced before the Special Judge for ACB cases at Visakhapatnam, ACB
release said.

A youth, who had shot dead an alleged sex worker as she was an obstacle in his love life with another sex worker, was today sent to seven days’ police custody by a Delhi court.

Metropolitan Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal remanded accused Munshi Ram, 25, to Delhi Police custody till March 4 for
taking him to Saharsa in Bihar to find out source of the weapon used in the crime.

Hyderabad blasts: NIA seeks custody of suspected IM operatives

The NIA has moved a Delhi court seeking custody of two alleged operatives of banned terror outfit Indian Mujahideen to interrogate them in connection with the twin blasts in Hyderabad which claimed 16 lives.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) moved a plea before district judge I S Mehta, who issued production warrants for Wednesday against Syed Maqbool and Imran Khan.

The two are lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody after being arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in connection with the August 2012 Pune blasts.

Pak’s Indian High Commission expenses amongst highest in world

With rapid depreciation of the exchange rate and escalating living costs in world capitals, the government of Pakistan spent a whopping Rs 9.8 billion on its foreign missions last year, with the Indian mission in New Delhi being amongst the highest in world.

Official documents revealed that over the past six fiscal years, Pakistan’s 121 missions abroad registered a 72 percent increase in expenses, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs incurring cumulative expenditures worth Rs 48.8 billion, reports The Express Tribune.

No evidence of Afghan claim of ‘torture, murder’ by US forces: NATO

NATO has said that it has found no evidence to support the allegations that US special forces committed acts of ‘torture’ and ‘murder’ in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has ordered US special forces to leave Wardak province last week after it was claimed that the elite units had been involved in the torture and disappearance of Afghan civilians.

NATO said in a statement that it became clear that armed individuals named as U.S. special force stationed in Wardak province engage in harassing, annoying, torturing and even murdering innocent people,”

Govt to increase manpower in a phased manner: Scindia

Government plans to increase manpower in power sector utilities in a phased manner, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

“At present there is no shortage of manpower mainly for grid operation function, however, additional manpower required for certain functions has been planned in a phased manner,” Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia informed the Rajya Sabha.

He said that there is no scarcity of manpower for important grid operation function. Power System Operation Corporation has adequate manpower at each Regional and National Load Despatch Centre.

Mufti demands return of Guru’s mortal remains

Opposition PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the body of Afzal Guru be returned to his family for proper burial, saying this will help “rebuild trust” between Kashmir and rest of the country.

Sayeed, a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, also termed the hanging of the Parliament attack convict as a “negative reference point in Kashmirs painful history”.
