Vitamin C supplements boost kidney stone risk in men

Men who take vitamin C supplements regularly run a higher risk of developing kidney stones, Swedish researchers have warned.

The research is based on data from a large population-based study of men from Västmanland and Örebro counties, who were monitored for 11 years.

A total of 23,355 men were identified who had no history of kidney stones and who took either no dietary supplements or supplements in the form of vitamin C only. During the study period, 436 of the participants developed kidney stones that required medical attention.

Mars Express has mapped most of Martian surface

The Mars Express space probe, which this year celebrates the 10th anniversary of its launch, has mapped almost 90 percent of the surface of the Red Planet, the European Space Agency announced Monday.

The photographs of the planet’s surface have been taken from orbit around Mars with the probe’s High Resolution Stereo Camera, which is capturing the images in colour, in three dimensions and with a resolution of about 10 meters per pixel.

The map is comprised of 2,702 individual shots, grouped into a type of mosaic in which can be seen the gaps that still need to be photographed.

We will pursue case till the end: Rape victim’s father

All those behind the Dec 16 gang-rape here should be hanged, said the father of the 23-year-old victim stressing that he would pursue the case till the end.

As the case against the five accused in the gang-rape of the young woman, who succumbed to her grievous injuries on Dec 29, began in a Delhi court, her father addressed a press conference Tuesday to assert that he would approach the courts to ensure justice was done.

“I want all six of them to be hanged. We will go to the court and pursue the case till the end,” he said, with his son by his side. The sixth accused is a juvenile.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Tuesday said if a woman complained of harassment in a bus, the driver would take it straight to a police station.

“If there is a complaint from a woman passenger about harassment, indecent behaviour or molestation by male passengers, the conductor will order the bus to be driven directly to the nearest police station,” an MSRTC official said here.

Sardar to lead India in Hockey World League

Sardar Singh will lead India’s 18-man squad Hockey India in the Hero Hockey World League Round 2 to be played at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here Feb 18-24.

Hockey India selector Syed Ali, chief coach Michael Nobbs and exercise physiologist Jason Konrath along with government observer Harbinder Singh selected the team and six standbys on the basis of their performance in the ongoing Hockey India League.

MIM leader’s voice recorded, custody extended

Forensic experts Tuesday recorded the voice of MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi in a court, which also extended his judicial custody till Feb 19 in a hate speech case.

Experts of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory recorded the legislator’s voice as he has reportedly claimed during the interrogation that the voice in the video footage of his speech is not his.

Official said the voice sample would be sent to a laboratory in Chandigarh to match it with the voice in the video footage of the public meeting.

Police register case against online abusers of Kashmir girl band

Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case and identified several Facebook users who had posted abusive and threatening messages on the page of the only all-girls rock band of the Valley.

“A case under Section 66 A of the IT Act and Section 506 RPC (Criminal Intimidation) has been registered in police station Rajbagh with regard to the hate messages posted on the Facebook page of the Pragaash band,” a police spokesman said today.

He said the investigations are in full swing but refused to give any details.

I want to serve the people: Malala Yousafzai

“I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child, to be educated,” Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban for promoting girls’ education, has said in a recorded message.

The 15-year-old was shot by a Taliban assassin as she took a bus home from school in Pakistan’s northwest region in October 2012. She was flown to Britain shortly after the attack and was treated at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

She said she is “getting better day by day”.

Sick person contaminates office by lunchtime

A sick person who reports for duty can contaminate more than half of his office`s common surfaces with virus or the bugs by lunchtime, says a study.

Some of the bacterial hot spots include phones, desktops, tabletops, doorknobs, photocopiers, elevator buttons, the office fridge and tea vending machines, according to University of Arizona researchers in the US.

However, the study also revealed that simple acts such as hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser or wipes, can drastically reduce employees` risk of infection.

China`s infamous pollution besides poverty is turning out to be a major health hazard as the twin problems were identified as major cause of cancer, an official media report here said.
Cancer and its treatment in China is influenced by air pollution, poverty and a fledgling medical insurance system, the Health News, an affiliate newspaper of the Health Ministry, reported today on the ocassion of World Cancer Day.

Black tea `good for diabetics`

People who drink black tea are less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, according to researchers.

A new analysis of data from 50 countries found that the nations who drank the most black tea also suffered the lowest levels of the metabolic syndrome, the Daily Times reported.

The study also found that high tea consumption was related to lower levels of obesity.

Scientists believe that the fermentation process, which turns green tea black, could also cause the production of complex health-giving flavonoids.
