Obama’s top Indian-American science aide quits

Subra Suresh, President Barack Obama’s top Indian-American science official, has resigned as director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to become the president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Obama appointed Suresh in 2010 as head of NSF, a $7 billion independent federal science agency charged with advancing all fields of fundamental science and engineering research and related education.

Fake currency racket busted
(Siasat News): Rajendranagar police has arrested three persons and seized fake currency valued at Rs. 15000/- a laptop and a printer from their possession.

According to the details, one Mohd. Khalid Khaja, 24, a videographer and resident of Yakutpura, hag purchased cigarettes from a pan shop in Rajendranagar and handed over a fake note the shop owner who suspected the validity of the note and informed the police.

Sunlight can cut risk of rheumatoid arthritis

Soaking up the Sun may reduce women’s risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, according to a new study.

Researchers found that women regularly exposed to sunlight reduced their risk of developing the condition by a fifth.

However, using sun creams or covering up to avoid the rays could lessen the protective effects.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in joints and the main symptoms are joint pain and swelling.

Siriwardene’s team inflicts 138-run loss on hosts to enter Super Six

India were tonight knocked out of the ICC Women’s World Cup after suffering an upset 138-run drubbing at the hands of Sri Lanka in a crucial Group A encounter here.

Chasing a challenging total of 283, the hosts put up a pathetic show to be bowled out for 144 in 42.2 overs at the Brabourne Stadium.

Incidentally, this was India’s first defeat to Sri Lanka in 18 matches, having won their previous 16 encounters with one ending in no result.

Sikh family found dead in suspected ‘murder-suicide’

Four members of a Sikh family, including two minor children, have died in Atlanta in the US state of Georgia under mysterious circumstances with police terming it as a “murder-suicide”.

“While Sartaj (12) and Gurtej (5) died from homicide by sharp force injuries to the neck, their mother Damanjit Kaur Grover (47) died from homicide by blunt force trauma to the head.

“Besides, the police also recovered the family head Shivinder Singh Grover’s(52) body, which was found hanging at their their residence in Johns Creek on Monday,” Johns Creek Police Chief Ed Densmore said yesterday.

YSR’s daughter resumes ‘padyatra’

After a seven-week break due to a knee surgery, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Sharmila Wednesday resumed her ‘padyatra’.

The sister of jailed MP and party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy resumed her walkathon at Turkayamjal in Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad, where an injury in December had forced her to suspend the ‘padyatra’.

The 37-year-old was given a warm welcome by YSRCP leaders and activists as she reached YSR Gardens along with her mother and party’s honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma and sister-in-law Bharathi.

215,000 kids in Somalia in urgent need of healthcare

About 215,000 children in Somalia are in urgent need of health care due to increased vulnerability to health complications related to malnourishment, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

WHO Emergency Coordinator for Somalia Omar Saleh told journalists in Nairobi Tuesday that there is need to ensure that more people especially those in rural areas can receive health and other humanitarian services, reported Xinhua.

Charge less to fly full, govt advises airlines

Concerned over empty flight seats, the government has asked Indian carriers why could they not charge low spot fares so that about 30 per cent of their seats do not go vacant.

Observing that highly exorbitant rates were being charged closer to the travel dates, Civil Aviation Ministry officials, however, made it clear that the government had no intention to decide airfares which have to be determined by the market.

Modi meets PM, gives memorandum on Sardar Sarovar

It was a good meeting that lasted for a quite a while, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.

“It was a good meeting. We spoke for quite a while on various issues,” Modi told reporters after meeting the prime minister at his 7 Race Course Road residence.

He said he gave the prime minister a memorandum on issues related to the Sardar Sarovar dam.
Modi, who landed here in the morning, reached the prime minister’s residence around 10 a.m.
Officials said the visit was a courtesy call.

Baby girl succumbs to father’s bite injuries

An infant baby girl, who was bitten off by her own father, succumbed to the injuries at a Bikaner hospital on Wednesday morning.

The 5-month old girl named Radha became a victim of her drunk father’s rage when a 36-year old Bahadur Singh bit off his daughter’s nose, lip and cheek last week after a tiff with his wife.

Indian Railways might soon announce another hike in rail fares, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Railways has plan to increase AC 3-tier, chair car and sleeper class fares to generate more revenues the paper stated

Obama to visit Israel: White House

US President Barack Obama, would visit Israel along with Jordan and the West Bank, the White House said on Wednesday.

“The start of the president’s second term and the formation of a new Israeli government offer the opportunity to reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel and to discuss the way forward on a broad range of issues of mutual concern, including, of course, Iran and Syria,” the White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, told reporters at his daily news conference.

Police intensifies investigations against Swamy Vedanty’s inciting speech

Police has intensified its action against the cases registered against fundamentalist organizations. Husaini Alam Police had registered a complaint in 2010 against BJP’s Pratapgarh MP Dr. Ram Vilas Vedanty for his inciteful speech. Mr. Venkata Reddy, Inspector of Police, Hussaini Alam told that criminal case was registered under section 53 (A) (Spreading hatred between two communities) of IPC against him.

In a similar case registered in Shah Inayath Gunj Police Station in 2010 against VHP leader Acharaya Dharmender, investigations have already been completed.

Petition field for police custody of Corporator Bilal

Special Investigation Team filed a petition in Nampally Criminal Court for taking Majlis Corporator Bilal into police custody. S.I.T officials filed this petition in the court of 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. It said that Bilal has to be interrogated in connection with the communal riots occurred in 2012 in Rain Bazaar area. The police pleaded for three days custody.

Bilal had surrendered before the court on 31st January. Court had given him in Judicial custody for 14 days since he was involved in five cases. He was shifted to Cherlapally Jail.

CPM’s warning against power tariff hike
