GHMC pays rich tributes to Sarojini Pulla Reddy

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday paid huge tributes to former minister and first woman Mayor Sarojini Pulla Reddy.

Speaking on the condolence motion, during the GHMC’s ordinary meeting held at corporation’s headquarters, MLCs MS Prabhakar (Congress) and Aminul Hassan Jafferi (MIM) and floor leaders Mohammad Nazeeruddin (MIM) and D Rambabu (Congress) lauded the services of Sarojini Pulla Reddy who served the city and State in different capacities. Prabhakar also demanded installation of her statue in the city.

TDP, BJP slams Mayor for adjourning GHMC meet

The Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party condemned GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain for adjourning the GHMC’s council meeting after passing the condolence motion on Sarojini Pulla Reddy.

The TDP and BJP corporators staged dharna before the Mayor’s chambers and shouted slogans against him. Talking to reporters, TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy alleged that the Mayor was deliberately avoiding discussions on the civic problems being faced by the people.

GHMC budget on Feb 18

GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain on Wednesday informed that the GHMC’s special meeting to pass the corporation’s budget would be held on February 18. This will be followed by corporation’s ordinary meeting on February 19.

Talking to reporters here along with MIM MLC Aminul Hassan Jafferi and floor leader Mohammad Nazeeruddin, the Mayor said that a majority of corporators were in favour of adjourning the GHMC meeting after passing the condolence motion and therefore, it was adjourned.

Congress defends Mayor on GHMC meet

The Congress party on Wednesday defended the decision of GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain in adjourning the corporation’s ordinary meeting after passing the condolence motion on Sarojini Pulla Reddy.

Talking to reporters here, MLC MS Prabhakar, Deputy Mayor D Rajkumar and floor leader D Rambabu thanked the Mayor for passing the condolence motion. They said that it was an established Parliamentary procedure to adjourn the session after passing a condolence motion although the Mayor has discretionary powers to continue the session.

BCCI finally agrees to institute annual lecture after Pataudi

Bowing to pressure from the Pataudi family, particularly his wife Sharmila Tagore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Wednesday finally decided to institute an annual lecture after former captain late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

“The memorial lecture will be an humble recognition of his contribution to the sport,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale said in a statement.

Tagore had written a scathing letter to BCCI president N. Srinivasan over the delay in taking a decision over the Pataudi Lecture and Pataudi Trophy for last year’s India-England Test series.

Man held with saffron worth Rs 36.5 lakh from IGI

A man has been arrested at the Indira Gandhi Airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle saffron, worth Rs 36.5 lakh, into the country.

A case of smuggling was registered against Delhi-resident Gaurav Sethi for trying to clear 14.6 kg of saffron without payment of customs duty, a Customs press release said Wednesday.

Sethi had arrived from Dubai yesterday and declared that he was not carrying any dutiable goods.

MLA’s daughter files plaint against cops for manhandling him

Even as the CID is probing the alleged rough handling of former minister and Congress MLA P Shanker Rao by police in connection with a land encroachment case, his daughter today lodged a complaint against the policemen.

Rao’s daughter Sushmita, who lodged a complaint with the Musheerabad police, alleged that Neredmet police personnel “man-handled” a senior MLA (Shanker Rao), who underwent a by-pass surgery recently, while picking him up for questioning in connection with the case on January 31.

Five students die in accidents

At least five students died in two separate accidents early Wednesday morning here and in Kendrapara district, police said.

Three students of a private engineering college were killed when their motorbike collided with a stationary truck near Shyamsundar junction on the Paradip-Daitary expressway in dense fog in Kendrapara district, they said.

The three were identified as Debashis Jena (22), Divya Ranjan Thatoi (23) and Kumar Ankur (22).

The bodies of two hotel management students were also recovered from the railway lines here, police said.

MP attracted live investments worth only Rs.6 lakh cr; Poor implementation a worry: ASSOCHAM

People living close to equator likelier to have allergies, asthma

Living in locations closest to the equator can put people at increased risk of developing allergy and asthma due to higher UV-B rays exposure, according to a new study.

“UV-B rays exposure is higher for people living in areas closer to the equator. This increase in UV-B may be linked to vitamin D, which is thought to modify the immune system. These modifications can lead to an elevated risk of developing allergy and asthma,” said Vicka Oktaria, MPH, lead study author.

Teacher arrested for making obscene calls to student

A school teacher has been arrested for allegedly making obscene phone calls to a minor girl student, police said today.

Akash Choudhary (21), a teacher working with KKC School in city’s Anand Nagar locality was arrested yesterday, they said.

Choudhary had forcibly given a cell phone to the girl, a student of class VIII, about a week ago and later started making obscene calls to her during night hours.

The BCCI today instituted an annual lecture to honour the memory of late former India skipper Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi which would be inaugurated by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar on February 20 in Chennai.

“The inaugural Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Memorial Lecture will be delivered by cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar on Wednesday, 20 February 2013, at the Taj Coromandel, Chennai,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Sun Pharma receives USFDA nod for anti-cancer injection

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries today said it has received US health regulator`s approval to market generic version of Doxil injection, used in treating ovarian cancer in the American market.

The Mumbai-headquartered firm, in a statement, said its subsidiary has received approval from US food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Doxorubicin HCl Liposome Injection.

“This generic Doxorubicin HCl Liposome injection USP, 2 mg/ml is therapeutically equivalent to Doxil Liposome Injection, 2 mg/ml of Janssen Research and Development, LLC,” the company said.

Sensex trades flat, capital goods and bank stocks plummet

A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was trading flat in the afternoon trade Wednesday as capital goods and bank stocks plummeted.

The 30-scrip Sensex, which opened at 19,737.77 points, was ruling at 19,682.65 points, up 22.83 points or 0.12 percent around 1 p.m. from its previous close at 19,659.82 points.

The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 19,767.25 points and a low of 19,674.03 points. The midcap index was up 14 points, while the smallcap index was higher by 29.21 points.

226 heinous crimes identified in 2012

The Madhya Pradesh government has said that prompt action is being taken in cases pertaining to atrocities against women, rapes and other crimes.

Cases were being investigated and put forth before courts within the prescribed time-limit, an official release said here Wednesday.

During 2012, a total of 226 heinous cases of crimes were identified and of these, 75 pertained to criminal offences against women. The rate of conviction of cases stood at 61 per cent during 2012.

‘Omega-3 fatty acids act against liver disease in obese’

An omega-3 fatty acid counteracts the effect of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), afflicting 75 percent of the obese, says a new study.

The American Liver Foundation estimates that about 25 percent of the US population and 75 percent of the obese have NAFLD. This early-stage health condition can sometimes progress to more serious, even fatal diseases, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH.
