Shu Lin, Yanchuan Shi and Herbert Herzog, professor and his team have been studying the complex processes behind energy balance using various mouse models, the journal Cell Metabolism reports.

`Omega-3 fatty acids act against liver disease in obese`

An omega-3 fatty acid counteracts the effect of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), afflicting 75 percent of the obese, says a new study.

The American Liver Foundation estimates that about 25 percent of the US population and 75 percent of the obese have NAFLD. This early-stage health condition can sometimes progress to more serious, even fatal diseases, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH.

Green tea, red wine may hold promise for Alzheimer`s treatment

According to new research from the University of Leeds Natural, chemicals found in green tea and red wine may disrupt a key step of the Alzheimer`s disease pathway.

In early-stage laboratory experiments, the researchers identified the process that allows harmful clumps of protein to latch on to brain cells, causing them to die. They were able to interrupt this pathway using the purified extracts of EGCG from green tea and resveratrol from red wine.

The findings offer potential new targets for developing drugs to treat Alzheimer`s disease.

Three dead in Mumbai bridge collapse, FIR against L&T

At least three people died and several others were injured after a portion of an under-construction Mumbai Metro bridge collapsed in Andheri East on Wednesday night.

The incident took place at around 11 pm near the international airport.

A case of negligence has also been registered against the construction company Larsen and Tubro.

According to reports, eight fire tenders and four ambulances immediately reached the spot and rescue operations were in full swing.

‘Be careful when surfing the web’

Computer experts from Germany have warned people to be more careful while surfing the internet as malicious programs called “drive-by downloads” can be downloaded unintentionally when users visit “manipulated websites”.

Currently the biggest threat was the so-called “drive-by downloads”, according to the German Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media or Bitkom.

“Cyber criminals are operating in increasingly sophisticated ways,” said Bitkom president Dieter Kempf.

Obama approves providing legal advice on use of drones to Congress

US President Barack Obama has reversed course and agreed to provide congressional intelligence committees access to classified information providing the legal rationale for drone strikes against American citizens linked with terrorist groups abroad, two officials familiar with the matter have said.

According to one official, Obama made the decision on Wednesday to provide members of Congress with the Office of Legal Counsel”s advice following the leak earlier in the week of a Justice Department white paper on the use of drones.

Pak legislator questions Rehman Malik’s remark

A minority legislator of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party has called for a check of Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s mental status for implying that only non-Muslims are terrorists.

Saleem Khurshid Khokhar, a Christian, moved an adjournment motion against Malik in the Sindh Assembly yesterday, The Express Tribune reported on its website.

He referred to Malik’s recent remarks in the National Assembly or lower house of parliament that terrorists had been asked to lay down their arms or declare themselves “non-Muslims”.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday imposed a complete ban on the transfer and development of land around shrines of minority communities in the wake of allegations about the illegal sale of a gurdwara’s property by a state-run body.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, which was hearing a case regarding the illegal sale of the gurdwara’s land by the Evacuee Trust Property Board, ruled there would be a complete ban on transfer of such land as well as development of roads or any development work.

Embattled Internet firm Yahoo has a deal to have Google serve up advertising on some of its websites.

Yahoo said in a statement it recently signed a nonexclusive agreement that will have Google displaying ads on unspecified Yahoo Web properties ‘and certain co-branded sites’ using Google”s ad programs for both traditional computers and mobile devices.

Those programs serve up ads that are related to the content on a particular site, Fox News reports.

Ahmadinejad claims ‘Iran already a nuclear state’

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has declared that his country is a nuclear power and should be treated as such.

During an interview with an Egyptian newspaper on the eve of his visit to Cairo, he also stressed that his regime has no plans to use that capability for an attack on Israel.

Ahmadinejad told the newspaper Al-Ahram, according to the Israeli website Haaretz, that Iran is ‘already an industrial and nuclear country, a country that has conquered space.’

Three killed as slab from bridge crashes

At least three labourers were killed and six injured when a slab from an under construction bridge adjacent to the airport fell while being hoisted by a crane, officials said here Thursday.

The incident occurred around 11.45 p.m. Wednesday when a 30-metre slab from the Sahar Elevated Access Road near Mumbai Airport crashed to the ground, city disaster control officials said. The crane hoisting it also collapsed, trapping the workers underneath.

The injured have been admitted to the nearby Holy Spirit and Seven Hills hospitals for treatment.

Man in jail for assaulting girl with rod

A man arrested for attempting to rape a girl and shoving an iron rod into her mouth has been remanded to 14-day of judicial custody by a Delhi court.

Anil Kumar, arrested for attempting to rape and murder a class XI girl after trespassing into her house in South Delhi, was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Amitabh Rawat who sent him to judicial custody till February 19.

“…on the request of the police, the accused (Anil) is remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. He be produced on February 19,” the court said.

Acid attacks: SC asks Centre, states to address the menace

Viewing with concern incidents of acid attacks, the Supreme Court today directed the Centre to convene in six weeks a meeting of Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories to address the menace and discuss framing of a law for treatment and compensation to victims.

Not satisfied with the steps taken by the Centre to regulate sale of acid and to curb its use for attacking women, a bench headed by Justice R M Lodha directed the Union Home Secretary to meet all the Chief Secretaries to formulate a policy to address the menace of the acid attacks.

US President Barack Obama’s visit to Israel next month will be made without any preconditions, the American ambassador to Israel said Wednesday.

White House officials said Tuesday that Obama will visit Israel in his first trip abroad during his second term.

Obama did not make an official visit to Israel during his first term as president, Xinhua reported.

Indian women`s cricket team arrived here today for their World Cup play-off match against traditional rivals Pakistan at Barabati Stadium at Cuttack on Thursday.

The team members, including captain Mithali Raj, were given ceremonial welcome at the airport before being escorted to the hotel.

“The Indian players will not undertake net practice today. They will go to Cuttack for the match early in the morning tomorrow,” an Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) functionary said.
