An engineering student, allegedly committed suicide for the cause of a separate Telangana state at Pavanpuri Colony here today, the police said. The body of N Dinesh Chandra, a third-year B Tech student in a private college, was found hanging in his room they said, adding that a death note was also found in the room.

Karnataka High Court today ordered issue of notices to state and Central governments on PIL relating to section 66 A of the Information Technology Act. Hearing a petition alleging sexual abuse of a minor, the Bombay High Court today directed Maharashtra Government to file an affidavit stating what steps it had taken to implement the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenders Act. The direction was given by justices A M Khanwilkar and K K Tated on a petition filed by NGO ‘Sakhee’ alleging that an education baron and his eight associates had sexually assaulted a 16-year-old servant at his farmhouse in Pune.

Pascal approaches KSCRPC against wife, alleges child abuse

French Consulate official Pascal Mazurier, accused of raping his minor daughter, today filed a complaint against his wife before the Karnataka State Child Rights Protection Commission, charging her with child abuse of his three minor children. In his complaint, Mazurier alleged that his three children were being “psychologically abused and exploited as pawns by his wife Suja Jones for her evil agenda”. Pascal claimed he had credible information that his children are not in safe environment and are kept in the company of strangers and servants.

Man gets lifer for killing wife, son

A local court today sentenced a man for life imprisonment for killing his wife and a 7-year-old son in a residential apartment here in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand in April 2011. The court of District Judge I, Deepak Kumar, who convicted Arvind Raman on January 23, pronounced the quantum of punishment today. Based on the statement of the victims relative, a case had been lodged against 38-year-old Raman for strangulating his wife Sweta and son Swarn on April 4, 2011 in his residential apartment.

Constable held for accepting Rs 65 lakh bribe

A constable, attached to Chalisgaon police station in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 65 lakh from a private company official for a favour, a senior ACB officer said here today. Police Naik Bipin Jagannath Tiwari was caught by ACB sleuths while allegedly accepting the bribe amount from the complainant last night near Old Naka area on Chalisgaon- Malegaon Road in Chalisgaon, ACB SP (Nashik) Shashikant Mahavarkar said.

India has cleared Pak panel visit probing Mumbai attacks: Rehman Malik

India has cleared the second visit of a Pakistani judicial commission to cross-examine four officials in connection with the probe into the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Wednesday. India has given a green signal for the visit of the commission, which would travel to Mumbai without any delay, Malik told a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday evening.

Telangana: Cong MPs drop plans of resigning after AICC feelers

Congress MPs from Telangana tonight decided not to resign after indications from the AICC that the party is not against formation of a separate state. Nizamabad MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi, one of the MPs in the forefront of the agitation, said he did not see any need for resignation after the announcement. “I don’t think there is any need for resignation now. The statement by Chacko is clear,” he told reporters here. Goud was reacting to Party spokesperson P C Chacko’s statement that Congress is not against the formation of Telangana state.

The Pune blast case accused alleged here today that Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials forcibly took their signatures on blank papers after physically harassing them in custody. The war of words over TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s critical comments on the Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi family showed no sign of abatement today. Taking exception to Rao’s remarks made at a protest here two days ago, Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister A Ramanarayana Reddy said action needs to be taken against him as per law. Rs 10 lakhs stolen from SP leader’s car

Unidentified persons stole Rs 10 lakh from the car of a Samajwadi Party leader in Kavinagar area here, police said. SP leader Dharmendra Yadav had gone to attend a marriage function at Om Sai Ram farmhouse in Bumhaita near National Highway yesterday. He parked his SUV car outside the farmhouse, police said. 2 ‘thieves’ drown in Hindon river

Two suspected thieves drowned in the Hindon river after they jumped into it to escape from police in Indirapuram area of the district. According to the police, three persons robbed travellers of an auto in Abhai Khand area of Indirapuram last night. After people raised an alarm and chased them with the help of police they ran towards the Hindon river. While one of them was caught, two jumped into the river and drowned. Later, their bodies were fished out and sent for post mortem, police said. PTI

Differences of opinion tonight seemed to have cropped up among Congress MPs from Telangana with some of them saying there was no need to resign after a statement by party indicated it was not against a separate state while others insisted on quitting. Nizamabad MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi, one of the MPs at the forefront of the agitation for a separate state, told reporters that he did not see any need for the resignation after P C Chacko said the party was not against creation of Telangana. “I don’t think there is any need for resignation now. Chacko’s statement is clear,” Yaskhi said.

Israel’s Ambassador to India Alon Ushpiz today called upon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and discussed measures to strengthen ties between the state and his country. Ushpiz said Israel would participate in ‘Vibrant Gujarat Agro Tech Fair 2014’ and discussed about enhancing Research and Development (R&D) in various fields with the chief minister. Maha police deny Asaduddin Owaisi permission to speak at rally

Maharashtra police today handed over a notice to MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, denying him permission to address a public meeting at Aurangabad in Maharashtra, police sources here said. Owaisi was scheduled to hold a party rally at Aurangabad on February 1. Six killed in road mishap in AP

Six persons of a family were killed and five others injured when the pick-up vehicle in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry in Wardhanapet mandal here, police said Wednesday.

The incident happened at Punnal cross-roads when the four-wheeler in which 11 people were travelling from Lingapur village was hit from the opposite direction by a coal-laden lorry late last night resulting in spot death of three persons while three others succumbed to injuries in a hospital, they said.

APSRTC to impart training in self-defence for women employees

In the wake of rising incidents of violence against women, the state transport undertaking here has launched ‘Self-Defence Training’ for its women employees, particularly, conductors.

ED raids in Punjab, Delhi on drugs mafia

Tracking a money laundering scandal involving nexus between non-resident Indians (NRIs) and the drugs mafia, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Wednesday raided 15 locations in Punjab, Delhi and Chandigarh, officials said here.

No disclosures were being made by ED officials but sources said the alleged money laundering could be of over Rs.700 crore.
