Man murders girl; angry villagers lynch him

A suspected mentally challenged man allegedly murdered a three-year-old girl in Billur village in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur district and, in turn, was lynched by angry locals today, police said.

Initially, police said, the culprit Naron Prakash gained entry into an house and picked up a girl and started to flee. But a boy threw stones at him, forcing him to drop her.

Later, he picked up a three-year-old girl who was playing outside her house. He threatened those who tried to chase him with an iron rod and in the melee, two motorcyclists were injured, police said.

Student of OU found dead at classmate’s house

A 23-year-old student of Osmania University was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the house of her classmate in Chatrinaka area of Old City here, police said on Tuesday.

The young woman was suspected to have been strangled to death last night. Her body has been sent for postmortem, they said.

The body was found lying at the house of Shiv Kumar, who is a Ph D student at the Osmania University, police said.

Youth arrested for raping, killing minor in Barabanki

A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a 16-year-old girl in Ramnagar area here, police said today.

Parvesh (21) allegedly kidnapped the minor girl on Saturday morning when she was returning home with her younger sister, Superintendent of Police Syed Waseem said.

The accused was arrested following a complaint by the girl’s family, Waseem said.

Parvesh yesterday confessed to the crime, the SP said, adding, the girl’s body was recovered with her throat slit from the toilet of a primary school.
Postmortem report has confirmed rape, he said.

Man arrested for raping minor cousin

A man has been arrested from the outskirts of Jammu for allegedly raping his 13-year-old cousin, police said today.

Mukesh Kumar alias Monu was arrested from Jammu General Bus stand as he landed in the city from Ludhiana in Punjab last night, police said.

The victim’s father had lodged a complaint on December 17 that his minor daughter had been raped by her cousin on December 12, they said.

The victim’s medical examination was conducted and her statement was recorded before the judicial magistrate.

Strengthen legal regime against rape in India: UN rights chief

United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay asked the Indian Government to strengthen the country”s legal regime to get rid of the “terrible scourge” of rape.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described rape as a “national problem” in India, affecting women of all classes and castes and requires national solutions.

Pillay expressed deep sadness over the death of Delhi rape victim and said she joined Indians in “all walks of life in condemning” the attack on the 23-year-old student, expressing confidence that India could emerge reformed in the wake of this terrible crime.

Kingfisher Airlines loses flying permit

Private airline Kingfisher Airlines has lost its permit to fly after a deadline to renew its suspended licence expired.

Aviation regulator – the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Tuesday that it has asked Kingfisher to furnish further details about the state of its finances.

“Kingfisher”s flying permit has lapsed. They failed to provide additional details on the funding of operations,” a foreign news agency quoted DGCA chief Arun Mishra, as saying.

Advocate seeks to appear in court on behalf of Akbar Owaisi

An advocate, Mohammed Azeemuddin, on Monday filed a memo in a Nampally court seeking permission to appear on behalf of MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi in a criminal case.

A petition was earlier filed by Kashimshetty Karunasagar, another advocate, against the alleged inflammatory speech of Owaisi which came up for hearing at the court of VII Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.

Azeemuddin approached the court saying that he would like to contest the case on behalf of Owaisi.

Alcoholic woman ends life
(Siasat News): An alcoholic woman commits suicide in Chatrinaka police station limits in old city. 55-year-old Tabi Bai was an alcoholic and did not give up the bad habit despite counseling by her relatives.

However, she set herself ablaze yesterday. The reason behind this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. She died in the hospital during the treatment.

Police has registered a case and further investigations are on.

Nine killed during New Year celebrations

The New Year began on a tragic note with nine people, including revellers, getting killed in four separate road accidents in Andhra Pradesh.

Two youngsters celebrating the New Year were killed in the upmarket Jubliee Hills here when a speeding car hit their motorcycle. Police said the accident took place around 1.30 a.m.

Two youth were injured in another accident in the city when they fell from their motorcycle.

Gang-rape: ”I have written to all parties to facilitate decision making”, says Shinde

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday said he has written letters to all political parties asking them to send their suggestions on the issue of laws relating to crimes against women to the Justice Verma Committee so that it is easier to take decisions.

“I have written to all the political parties to give their suggestions to the Justice Verma Committee to facilitate the decision making,” Shinde told mediapersons outside the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) here.

Curfew lifted from Pulwama town in J&K

Authorities on Tuesday lifted four-day curfew from Pulwama town in south Kashmir following improvement in law and order situation in the area, officials said.

“Curfew has been lifted from the affected areas this morning,” the officials said. They said senior officials of the district administration and police are monitoring the situation in the area.

Curfew was imposed in Pulwama town on Friday following massive protests against firing by security forces that resulted in injuries to seven civilians.

India, Pakistan exchange list of nuclear installations

India and Pakistan on Tuesday exchanged the list of their nuclear installations and facilities through diplomatic channels, simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad.

The exchange was covered under the ”Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations between India and Pakistan”.

The agreement, which was signed on December 31, 1988 and entered into force on January 27, 1991, provides, inter alia, that the two countries inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the agreement on the first of January of every calendar year.
