Alcohol-smuggling attempt foiled in UAE

An attempt to smuggle a total of 216 bottles of alcohol out of the UAE was foiled at the Al Ghuwaifat border.

Customs inspectors arrested the driver of the truck carrying the bottles, hidden inside the vehicle’s tool box.

While passing through the specified path for empty and unloaded trucks, customs inspectors told the vehicle to go through a radiation detection device that showed the existence of smuggled goods.

‘Bird hunting creates friction between India, Pak’

The hunting of endangered houbara bustards by members of Arab royal families in Pakistan has led to friction along the Indo-Pak frontier, with the BSF complaining about the firing, a media report said on Wednesday.

The hunting in border regions has “caused friction with neighbouring India”, The Express Tribune reported.

Any firing near the border is a violation of norms and India’s Border Security (BSF) has lodged protests with the Pakistan Rangers.

Sana to lead Pakistan in women’s cricket World Cup 2013

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a 15-member women’s cricket squad for the upcoming World Cup 2013 to be held in India later this month.

The PCB retained Sana Mir as captain of the team while senior player Bisma Maeroof was appointed as her deputy, reports Xinhua.

The Women’s World Cup will be held from Jan 31 to Feb 17 in Mumbai. Pakistan will leave Jan 25 for the event.

Pakistan are in Group B. They play their warm-up matches against England and the West Indies Jan 28 and Jan 29.

Woman gets part of dentist’s drill lodged in her lung

In a horrifying incident, a woman in Sweden ended up with part of a dentist’s drill in her right lung after she swallowed it during surgery.

The unnamed woman, said to be in her 60s, was having dental implants when the drill head came loose from the surgeon’s grip and fell into her mouth.

She was pulled into a sitting position, but it was too late to stop the part heading south, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

The woman was a patient at Vastmanland County Hospital in Vasteras, in central Sweden.

China warns Vietnam over South China Sea islands

Deploying its maritime vessels for patrolling in the disputed South China Sea, China has asked Vietnam not to implement its new maritime law, affirming sovereignty over the contested islands and cautioned Hanoi that the move would escalate bilateral tensions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunyang in a statement here urged Vietnam to refrain from taking any actions that complicate and escalate issues between the two countries, as the Vietnamese maritime law came into effective from yesterday.

Blast near MQM rally in Pakistan kills 4, injures over 50

A powerful bomb went off at a busy intersection in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi Tuesday, injuring over 50 people and kilig 4, witnesses and police officials said.

The blast occurred at Ayesha Manzil intersection, located a short distance from Jinnah Ground where the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had organised a rally this afternoon.

People leaving the rally were hit by the blast at about 7.15 pm, witnesses said. Officials at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said they had received more than 30 injured people and three of them were in a serious condition.

Internet search giant Google directed people to the page for Apple”s stock as users typed in ‘sell’ in the search bar on Google Finance.

Google, for its part, said the result was due to its algorithm rather than any concerted effort to undermine Apple”s stock.

The company told Search Engine Land in a statement that this was ‘no deliberate move’.

According to Mashable, Google said its ‘algorithms seem to be keying off of the words ”sell” and “sells” in the description of this very popular stock symbol.’

2,317 Karachi kids went missing in 2012

A staggering 2,317 children went missing from Pakistan’s port city of Karachi in 2012, according to a civil society group working to uphold the rights of women and children.

Data collected by the Roshni Helpline states it recorded about these children – both boys and girls – missing from the jurisdiction of 106 police stations in Karachi, Daily Times reported Wednesday.

On an average, two children from each police station were reported missing every month over the last 10 months.

The country’s Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin Ibrahim today recommended that the election should be conducted completely under the supervision of the army in order to maintain law and order.

Chairing a meeting of senior officials of the federal and provincial governments to assess the law and order situation ahead of the polls, Ibrahim suggested that armed soldiers should be deployed at all polling stations.

1st new tuberculosis drug in 40 years gets FDA approval

Johnson ‘N’ Johnson has won approval from The Food and Drug Administration for a tuberculosis drug that is the first new medicine to fight the deadly infection in more than four decades.

According to ABC News, the agency approved the company’s pill, Sirturo, for use with older drugs to fight a hard-to-treat strain of tuberculosis that has not responded to other medications.

But the agency cautioned that the drug carries risks of potentially deadly heart problems and should be prescribed carefully by

doctors, the report added.

Mother, daughter run over by train in Jamshedpur

A woman and her two-year-old daughter were run over and killed by a passenger train in Adityapur in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district on Wednesday.

The identity of the victims was not yet established but the bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem, Government Railway Police (GRP) sources said.

The incident occurred when the 30-year-old woman alongwith her child was crossing the track, sources said.

In another incident, a motorcyclist was crushed to death under the wheels of a dumper near Gadabasa in the Steel city of Jamshedpur in the morning.

Two men rape Class XI student in Delhi

Two men were arrested here after a 17-year-old complained on New Year’s eve that she was raped allegedly by them earlier, police said today.

One of the arrested is an engineer working with an IT firm and another an executive with an human resources company.

The girl alleged that she was raped by one of them in 2011 and another in early 2012 and approached the Sarojini Nagar Police Station on December 31, police sources said.

The victim is a Class XI student of a south Delhi school.

The accused were produced before court and sent to judicial custody.

NASA eyes one of the flattest galaxies in universe

Astronomers have captured one of the flattest galaxies known in the universe, sitting like a silver needle in the haystack of space.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope produced a beautiful image of the spiral galaxy IC 2233, one of the flattest galaxies known, the US space agency said.

Lying in the constellation of Lynx, IC 2233 is located about 40 million light-years away from Earth. This galaxy was earlier discovered by British astronomer Isaac Roberts in 1894.

‘Murdered’ OU student was pregnant

The police investigating the murder of a 23-year-old Osmania University student was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the residence of her friend in Hyderabad city, was pregnant.

The autopsy report of the girl has revealed that she was four months pregnant, the police said.

The police say that her pregnancy could be a significant motive behind her killing.

Kumar, who is a Ph.D student at the Osmania University, is absconding.

Comedy movie ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’, featuring Saqib Saleem, will release March 15.

The first trailer of the movie, which will see Ram Kapoor in the role of Saqib`s strict father, was released with late Yash Chopra`s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ on Nov 13.

Directed by debutante Ashima Chibber, the movie is set in the backdrop of Chandigarh and a loud Punjabi family where a boy loses his father`s car.

Saqib was last seen in the 2011 release ‘Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge’, which was released under the Y-Films banner.
