Woman dies after lover sets her ablaze for refusing money

A woman who was set ablaze by her 22-year-old lover for refusing him money succumbed to burn injuries at a local hospital, police said. The accused auto-driver has been arrested. 25-year-old Jaispal Khan had sustained 95 per cent burn injuries and was admitted to Sion hospital on Tuesday after her enraged lover Aftab Khan poured kerosene and set her on fire at her residence in suburban Mankhurd, when she turned down his demand for money, they said.

Chinese man gives 100-mn-pound dowry for girl’s wedding

A Chinese magnate, boss of a ceramics firm, gave his daughter an astounding 100-million-pound dowry for her wedding that included four boxes of gold jewellery, two luxury cars and several homes, a British daily said.

The dowry included a bankbook with deposits worth two million pounds (around 20 million yuan) and an impressive property portfolio, the Daily Mail reported.

Pictures of the dowry were posted online at the end of an “eight-day banquet” that took place in Jinjiang county in east China’s Fujian province.

An incident like the brutal gang-rape here could have been prevented had the Supreme Court’s guidelines on removal of tinted glasses from all vehicles been followed, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Altamas Kabir said Wednesday.

Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta Justice B Subhashan Reddy today directed the Cyberabad Police here to investigate allegations by a managing committee member of a housing society, who was allegedly attacked after she complained against the local MLA.

T Indrani, member of BHEL MIG Employees Co-operative Housing Colony in Serilingampally Mandal in Ranga Reddy district, had earlier approached the Lokayukta alleging that Serilingampally MLA Bikshapathi Yadav was using his MLA funds to grab the land of the colony.

Acid attack on woman in Srinagar

A 25-year old woman received serious burns on her face in an acid attack in the heart of the city Wednesday.

Police sources said a man threw acid at the victim in a lane in upscale Barzalla neighbourhood where scores of coaching centres are located and is frequented by hundreds of young men and women every day.

The woman, who received serious burns on face, was shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment.

The accused, Riyaz Ahmad Nath, has been arrested, police said and added that the motive behind the attack was not known yet.

Delhi Police Register Case Against Akbar For Hate Speech

A criminal case was registered against MIM floor leader in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi at Parliamentary Street Police Station.

A social activist Shabnam Hashmi has lodged a complaint against Akbaruddin with the police alleging that the latter’s speech at Nirmal meeting in Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh recently was an attack on secular, democratic and constitutional values.

OU Campus Tense After Dharnas And Arrests

Tension prevailed on the Osmania University campus today for a different reason. The students, who observed State wide bandh on Wednesday protesting against the murder of Law student Aruna, tried to organize a rally from Law College to the Secretariat.

The police obstructed the rally at the NCC Gate and arrested the students and shifted them to Nallakunta Police Station. The students demanded that the State government arrest the culprit one Shiva Kumar, who allegedly raped and murdered Aruna, and hang him to death.

Sub-zero temperatures in Kashmir, Ladakh

Minimum temperature in the Kashmir valley Wednesday fell much below freezing point, adding to the prevailing cold wave conditions here.

Due to a clear night sky, minimum temperatures have further fallen below the freezing point, a Met Department official told IANS.

The official said minimum temperature fell to minus 3.9 degrees in Srinagar, minus 7.7 degrees in Pahalgam and minus 9.2 degrees in Gulmarg.

The coldest town in Jammu and Kashmir is Leh which recorded minus 16.2 degrees. Kargil town recorded minus 14.8 degrees Celsius.

A man today axed his wife to death and later attempted suicide by consuming insecticide at Kothapalli village here, after the childless couple had an altercation, police said.

The incident took place under Ramagundam police limits, when Bodakunta Kumaraswamy (50) attacked wife Rajeshwari (45)
during a quarrel, after she accused him of not being able to father a child.

Enraged Kumaraswamy attacked her with an axe on the head, killing her on the spot, police said.

Army busts hideout in Poonch

Army troops today busted a hideout and recovered cache of ammunition and explosive material in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

25 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), on a specific information, launched a search operation in Hari-Budha area of Poonch
district and busted the hideout, officials said.

They recovered a cache of ammunition and explosive material including seven Chinese grenades, three grenades, 442
rounds of AK rifle and 100 rounds of sniper rifle.

South African fast bowler Dale Steyn captured his 300th Test wicket when he bowled Doug Bracewell on the first morning of the first Test against New Zealand at Newlands today.

Steyn, 29, was playing in his 61st Test. Only Australia’s Dennis Lillee, who achieved the feat in his 56th Test, and Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka (58) have reached the milestone in fewer matches.

Man kills two, injure another over suspicion of witchcraft

Two persons were killed and another is battling for her life in an attack believed to have taken place over suspicion of practice of withcraft in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, police said today.

SC notice on plea over women’s security

The Supreme Court Wednesday issued notice to the central government, all states and union territories and the National Commission for Women on a plea seeking measures for the “comprehensive security” for women.

The petition filed by Mukul Kumar also sought the implementation of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) adopted by the UN in 1979.

The apex court bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi while issuing the notice also asked Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati to assist the court in the matter.

Naxals kill sarpanch in Bijapur

A sarpanch of Mankeli village in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh was allegedly stabbed to
death by naxals today, police said.

Budhram (45) was stabbed to death by four naxalites with sharp weapons in Nayapara locality of Bijapur district
headquarter,” SP Prashant Agrawal told PTI.

According to police, the ultras, dressed in school uniforms, attacked Budharam when he was taking a walk outside
his house in Bijapur town, the administrative headquarter of Bijapur district, around 350 km from here.
