Gang-rape protesters observe black day

With the chargesheet in the Delhi gang-rape likely to be filed Thursday, protesters at Jantar Mantar here observed a black day, accusing the police of dragging their feet.

Braving the chill, many people, most of them college students, started joining others in their vigil at the 18th century observatory that has become the protest site since the horrific Dec 16 incident.

“The police should speed up investigations,” said Puneet Bakshi, one the protesters.

IT officials seize Rs 28,000 cr worth ‘US bonds’ in raid

Income-Tax officials have seized documents believed to be US Treasury bonds worth Rs 28,000 crore during a raid on the premises of a businessman in neighbouring Tirupur district.

The raids were carried out on the residence of Ramalingam at Upputhurai Palayam village on December 31 night, official sources said today.

The I-T action followed Ramalingam’s reported application to the Petroleum and Chemicals Ministries, seeking sanction to set up a Rs 1,000 crore crude oil refinery in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.

Boy killed, local residents protest

An 11-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a speeding bus on the Bahraich-Nanpara road here leading to strong protests by local residents who set the vehicle on fire.

The speeding bus on its way to Nanpara from Bahraich hit Razzak near Gulalpurva village killing him on the spot, police said.

Infuriated over the accident, the locals chased the fleeing bus and set it on fire after asking passengers to get down, police said, adding, they also held up traffic for sometime.

A case has been registered by police.

LG launches 55-inch OLED television

LG has launched a 55-inch OLED TV, which is more efficient than LCD (liquid crystal display) and plasma-based alternatives.

LG”s model will be sold in South Korea first with other markets, including Europe, to follow thereafter.

Both LG and Samsung announced 55in OLEDs last year, but LG is the first to make its available, the BBC reports.

The 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) OLED television will sell for 10,300 dollars or 6,300 pounds.

US drone kills Pakistani militant Mullah Nazir

Top Pakistani militant leader Mullah Nazir and five others have been killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan, BBC reported Thursday citing security officials.

Nazir and the others were killed when two missiles struck in the tribal district of South Waziristan, the officials added.

Nazir, who was wounded in a suicide bomb attack last November, had been accused of sending fighters to support the Afghan Taliban and fight foreign and pro-government troops.

According to reports, Mullah Nazir’s deputy, Ratta Khan, was also killed in the attack.

2 killed in wall collapse after LPG blast

Two persons were killed today when an LPG cylinder exploded at a house here and triggered a wall collapse.

The victims, living adjacent to the house where the cylinder blast was reported at Washermanpet this morning, were killed after a portion of the wall collapsed under the impact of the blast, police said.

At least five persons were injured and had been admitted to a hospital, they said.

Five devotees injured in road accident in AP

Five devotees were injured when their car collided with another vehicle near Hanuman Junction in Krishna district Thursday morning.

About 10 devotees from Garividi in Vizianagaram district were going to Vijayawada to relinquish their 40-day of Bhavani Deeksha when the accident occurred.

One of the injured was critical and was shifted to Guntur Government General Hospital, Hanuman junction police inspector V Vijaya Rao said.

Four others injured were admitted to Eluru government hospital.

A case has been registered, police added.

3 African students arrested for eve-teasing

Three Rwandan students were arrested today for allegedly misbehaving with a girl in Ramamandi area here.

“The three Rwandan students of a private university were arrested after locals caught them misbehaving with a girl in market area,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Dalvir Singh said.

The locals caught Pacific, Egnis Delku and Tisanuma and called the police, the ACP said, adding a case under section 354 of IPC has been registered against them.

Youth held for eve-teasing

A 22-year-old youth was arrested after a woman filed a complaint against him on the newly set up helpline here for eve-teasing.

The incident occurred in the Bairagarh township last evening after which a woman called the helpline centre and complained against the youth.

Following this, the Bairagarh police was informed about the complaint and the man, identified as Ajit, was arrested.

A case has been registered under section 503 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.
Further investigation was on, police added.

Asking the Centre to make amendments in law to name the proposed new anti-rape law after his daughter, father of the Delhi gangrape victim today said it will be an honour to the girl and respect public sentiments.

“I want the revised anti-rape law to be in the name of my daughter. It will be an honour for her. If there is some problem in doing due to constitutional provisions, Centre could amend them. It will also be a respect of public sentiments”, father of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim told PTI.

Missing man’s dead body found
(Siasat News): Vanasthalipuram police has found the dead body of a man who was missing from Nizamabad.

According to police sources, the deceased N Baliah, 60, was missing from December 24. The complaint was lodged with the local police station. However, his dead body was recovered from a field in Vanasthalipuram.

Police has registered a case of suspicious death and further investigations are on.

Al-Jazeera buys Al Gore’s Current TV

Qatar-based television station Al-Jazeera has acquired Current TV, the channel founded by former US president Al Gore and business partner Joel Hyatt.

Gore and Hyatt, who created the channel in 2005, confirmed the sale in a statement on Wednesday.

The deal gives Al-Jazeera a bridgehead into the US market: Current TV, although struggling in the ratings, is widely distributed on US cable providers, the Guardian reports.

According to the paper, Al-Jazeera will close Current TV and replace it with a new network, Al-Jazeera America.

Robots to explore Mars moon

Researchers have designed robot ‘hedgehogs’ – about half a metre wide and covered in spikes – to explore the surface of the Martian moon Phobos.

The spherical robots called hedgehogs are spiky to better cope with rolling and hopping across the surface of Phobos with its very low gravity. Marco Pavone, an assistant professor in Stanford University in collaboration with Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the hedgehog which is a sort of ‘hybrid’ machine – part flying spacecraft and part rover.

Car loses control over Expressway, falls down the flyover

A speedy car crashed into an Indica car and did a somersault from the Expressway. The two cars were badly damaged in the accident however no fatalities have been reported. Some pedestrians walking beneath the flyover got injuries. The accident occurred at pillar no 194. Though the car fell from a height but luckily the passengers suffered only minor injuries.

Man injured as electric transformer explodes at Bandlaguda

A man was severely injured as the electric transformer exploded at Noorinagar area of Bandlaguda. The accident occurred because the electric transformer was left unchecked by the Central Power Distribution Corporation Ltd.

According to details 24 year old Mohammed Abdul Mubeen son of Mohammed Abdul Majid resident of Ghousenagar, Bandlaguda was returning home from Noorinagar, Bandlaguda when suddenly an electric transformer exploded. Mubeen sustained serious injuries.

Younger generation very rude, less likely to tip: Study

Young people really are getting ruder and today’s 18 to 34-year-olds are less likely to say hello to neighbours or open the door for the elderly, according to a new study.

The age group is also more reluctant to give a cup of tea to builders or tip the postman at Christmas.

Research showed they were 23 per cent less likely, on average, to carry out common courtesies than over-55s.

Neighbours were ignored by nearly 35 per cent of the group compared with only 15 per cent of over-55s, the Daily Mail reported.

Minor girl abducted, raped; 2 arrested

In yet another shocking incident of sexual assault of women, a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped here by two persons, including a bus conductor known to her, police said today.

Police have arrested the conductor and his accomplice within hours of the incident coming to their notice yesterday.

The girl, belonging to a poor family and studying higher secondary in a government school here, has been admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Women and Child Hospital for medical examination, police said.
