Pakistan set 251-run target for India

Pakistan were bowled out for 250 runs with 10 balls to spare against India in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens here Thursday.

Opening batsman Nasir Jamshed made 106 while Mohammad Hafeez made 76.

Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma finished with three for 33 while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bagged three for 41.

Auckland Indians pay tribute to victim of gang rape on bus

(By Syed Mujeeb, New Zealand)Dozens of people gathered at a small and poignant memorial service in Auckland to remember an Indian woman who died after a vicious gang rape attack that has shocked the world.

Members of the Auckland Indian community gathered at Aotea Square last night to pay tribute to the 23-year-old medical student, who died in hospital from injuries she suffered in the December 16 attack.
Prayers were said and a two-minute silence was observed. A number of people held up signs calling for an end to violence against women.

Accused gets life term for raping 3-yr-old girl

A sessions court today awarded life imprisonment to an accused of raping a three-year -old girl in Jamkhambaliya taluka in 2011.

Additional Sessions Judge J N Srinivas today awarded life imprisonment to the accused – Jumma Iqbal (28) – after holding him guilty for the offence of rape.

The court also ordered him to a pay fine of Rs 25,000.

As per the case details, Jamkhambhaliya police arrested Iqbal on a complaint of raping a three-year-old girl and abandoning her at the farm area of Vadinar village in June 2011.

Indian ODI squad to be picked on January 6

The Indian squad for the five-match ODI series against England, starting in Rajkot on January 11, will be picked here on Sunday, a BCCI release said today.

The selection committee headed by chief selector, Sandeep Patil will meet after the conclusion of the third ODI between India and Pakistan on January 6 in the capital.

England, after winning the four-Test series 2-1 and drawing the two-match Twenty20 International had left for home for Christmas and New Year.

They would back for the One-day International series.

Congress leader in Assam accused of rape, beaten by villagers publicly

A prominent Congress leader of lower Assam, who is the chief coordinator of the party in Bodoland Territorial Council area has been accused by a woman of attempt to rape in her house at Salbari in Chirang district on Wednesday night.

The accused politician Bikrmasingh Brahma was the Congress candidate from Sapaguri assembly constituency in Baksa district in the 2011 assembly election which he lost.

The villagers of Salbari beat up the politician before handing him over to police. Though he has not yet been arrested, but he is in police custody.

”Spirit of Indo-Pak cricket series should not be crushed”: BJP on visa row

Asserting that people on both sides of the border enjoy a bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said the government and security agencies should be alert about visitors so that the spirit of the game is not crushed.

Kerala cops to Facebook: Remove fake photo of gang-rape victim

Kerala Police has written to Facebook following a complaint from the parents of a young woman whose photograph was posted on the social networking site and identified as the Delhi gang-rape victim.

N. Vinayakumaran Nair, assistant commissioner of police, who heads the Hi-Tech Crime Enquiry Cell, said a probe had begun following a complaint from the parents of the woman whose picture was misused.

“We have written to the site which posted the picture. It should have been removed by now,” Nair told IANS.

Book MIM leader for hate speech: Court

A city court Thursday directed the police to book a case against Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi for his alleged hate speech.

The IVth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court directed Osmania University police station to register a case against Akbaruddin for his provocative speech he made in Adilabad district Dec 24.

The court passed the orders on a petition filed by one Venkatesh Goud, a resident of Osmania University area.

Water supply to be affected on Friday and Saturday

Water supply will be affected in several areas of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad on Friday and Saturday.

According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, to attend the major leakages on pumping main of Phase-II of Krishna DWSP and also replacing the damaged valves in pumping stations at Nasarlapally and Kodandapur, it has been proposed to take 24-hours shut down i.e, from 3 PM on Friday to 3 on Saturday and also power shut down of AP TRANSCO for four hours on Saturday.

Court Orders FIR Against Akbar owaisi, CM assures strict action against Owaisi

A court here on Thursday ordered the police to register FIR against Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi over a communally provocative speech made by him, while the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy assured that “anyone who hurts sentiments will be dealt with as per law.”

The case regarding the hate speech made by Akbaruddin nearly 10 days ago on December 24, 2012 in Adilabad will come up for hearing at 4 pm on Thursday. The court order came on a petition filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

After a successful 2012, actor Akshay Kumar enters 2013 by shooting for the Hindi remake of Tamil action thriller “Thuppakki”.

“Started shooting my first film in the New Year, the Hindi remake of ‘Thuppakki’! Would love to get your good wishes today,” Akshay tweeted Thursday.

For the Hindi remake, Akshay once again teams up with Sonakshi Sinha with whom he worked in “Joker” and “Rowdy Rathore”.

‘Women can use knives, pepper spray in self-defence’

Pune Commissioner of Police Gulabrao Pol has asked women to carry knives, chilli powder and pepper spray and be prepared to use them in self-defence when attacked.

Speaking at a meeting organised to discuss security of women late Wednesday, Pol said that women should adopt such self-defence tactics before they call police for help.

When contacted by IANS Thursday, Pol said it was important that women defend themselves and avoid getting hurt before the police arrive.

Senior police official arrested on extortion charges

Two persons, including a senior police official were arrested by the anti-corruption bureau for allegedly extorting money from all police stations of the district.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Meena and another person, who allegedly used to extort money from SHOs of police stations of the district on his behalf, were arrested late last night.

The bureau sleuths also recovered unaccounted cash from Meena’s residence, IG ACB Umesh Mishra said.

Riteish Deshmukh completed 10 years in Bollywood Thursday and says that the day marks another new beginning for him as he debuts as a producer.

The 34-year-old made his Bollywood debut with “Tujhe Meri Kasam”, which also helped him find his soulmate in his co-star Genelia D’Souza, with whom he tied the knot last year.

“3rd Jan 2003 – a decade ago my ‘baiko’, Genelia D’Souza and me made our debut in this wonder world of films. ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’, a step that changed my life,” Riteish, son of late minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, tweeted.

Sensex trades flat, oil and gas stocks rally

A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was trading flat in Thursday’s afternoon session. Oil and gas, information technology and metal stocks gain.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,771.03 points, was ruling at 19,766.32 points around 12 p.m. — up by 52.08 points or 0.26 percent from its previous close at 19,714.24 points.

Despite the belief that smoking relieves stress, it is those who successfully quit who feel less anxious afterwards, researchers say.

Contrary to popular perception, smoking does not relieve stress but quitting it does, a research has revealed.

British researchers measured anxiety levels in almost 500 smokers – before and after they tried to give up smoking.

One in five said that they smoked to help them deal with stress.

All took part in an NHS smoking cessation programme that involved being given nicotine patches and attending two-monthly appointments.

Pakistan’s South Africa tour starts Jan 25

Pakistan will travel to South Africa for a series comprising three Tests, five ODI’s and two Twenty20s later this month.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Wednesday that the two-month long tour will start Jan 25 with a four-day match against South African Invitation XI at Buffalo Park and will conclude March 24 with the fifth and final ODI match at Willowmoore Park, Benoni, reports Xinhua.

Karnataka sets up dedicated Women’s helpline

Stepping up measures for women’s saftey in the backdrop of growing demand for such action, Karnataka Government on Thursday set up a dedicated helpline.

Women in distress and those facing threat of attack including molestation could call on phone number 1091. The helpline in Bangalore would work 24×7, state home minister R Ashok told reporters.
The government initiative comes in the backdrop of the national outrage over the gangrape of para-medical student in Delhi and several incidents of rapes in the state in the past fortnight.
