Actress Delnaaz Irani, who is competing for the ‘Bigg Boss’ title alongside ex-husband Rajeev Paul, says it’s a closure from her side but they will remain friends even when the reality show ends. The couple ended their 14-year-marriage last year although they were living separately since 2010. “From my side, it’s a closure. He is a wonderful human being. There are several reasons for the marriage to end,” she told a press conference today in the activity area of the house. “Even though we are not leaving the show as a couple but we would walk out as friends,” she said.

Heart transplant surgery done at Visakhapatnam hospital

Care Hospitals here successfully performed a heart transplant surgery on a 28-year-old male Mohammed Rafi at Visakhapatnam on December 4 after he had severe heart failure. This is the first heart transplant in a two-tier city outside Hyderabad, as the surgery was done at Vishakapatnam and later the 28-year-old patient on whom the heart transplant was performed, was shifted back to Care Hospitals here and is now ready for discharge.

Police recovers body of undressed woman from forest area

The police recovered the undressed body of an unidentified woman from a secluded forest area in Virar, Thane district, on the Mumbai-Ahmedbad highway today morning. The police registered a case of murder after they found some external wound on the body of the woman who is likely to be between 22 years and 25 years of age. The police arrived on the scene and took the body to the JJ Hospital for a postmortem. While the report is awaited, police sources said that body bears some strangulation marks on the neck and other marks indicating that the woman was attacked with some blunt object.

After a panchayat in Kishanganj district imposed fine on women using cellphones last month, another one in Siwan district has banned use of mobiles and wearing short dress by school and college girls. The ruling was adopted at a meeting of Siswa Kala panchayat under Hasanpur police station yesterday to stop crime against women, Sarpanch Vijaykant Kunwar told PTI.

AP Police files two FIRs against Owaisi for ‘hate speech’

Taking suo motu action, Andhra Pradesh Police today filed two FIRs against Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi for allegedly making a “hate speech” against a particular community. The FIRs were registered at Adilabad and Nizamabad districts last night and notices were dispatched to Owaisi seeking his appearance before the Investigating Officers (IOs) to record his statement, Director General of Police (DGP) V Dinesh Reddy said.

Narcotics seizures at its highest in Mumbai

Seizures of narcotics and contraband in Mumbai was maximum in 2012, as compared to the past ten years. “There were 543 cases registered, 2,672 arrests made and 731 kg of contraband worth Rs 14.51 crore were seized,” DCP (Anti Narcotics Cell) V B Deshmukh said. Deshmukh said the narcotics seized include 122 kg of amphetamine worth Rs 11.45 crore. Around 100 narcotics users were arrested on New Year’s eve for consuming drugs and partying on Sunday night.PTI

Afghan students picked up by police

Five Afghan students, who arrived here after a visit to Munnar, a hill station on the Western Ghats in the Idukki of Kerala, were taken into custody after they were found not having passport and visa documents, police said. The five are students of a college in Bangalore. After visiting Munnar, they arrived at Fort Kochi and tried to take a room in a lodge. When they were asked to show their documents, they said they had left it in the college. The lodge owner got suspicious and informed the police.

Two siblings die after eating contaminated food

Two minors today died after eating contaminated food while their mother was admitted to a hospital in serious condition in Vijay Nagar area of the district. 8-year-old Gulzar, elder sister Reshma (14) and their mother had ‘biryani’ in lunch after which they felt uneasy and were rushed to a nearby hospital, SHO Vijay Nagar Rajesh Dwivedi said. The two minors died in hospital and the condition of their mother was stated to be serious, he said. The matter is under investigation to ascertain whether they died of food poisoning or the food was contaminated with poison. PTI

Two Italian marines suspected of murdering two Indian fishermen they mistook for pirates set off back for India today after a court-granted Christmas leave at home with their families. The marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, who are awaiting trial in India and are also under investigation in Italy, were questioned by prosecutors in Rome for five hours before boarding a special military flight from Ciampino airport bound for the Indian state of Kerala. Indian prosecutors had voiced fears that the men would not return from their leave in Italy.

Man arrested for raping 6-year-old daughter for 6 months

A 40-year-old man, who was booked last month for allegedly raping his six-year-old daughter continuously for six months in Aluva area, was on Thursday arrested.

As per the complaint lodged by the man’s former wife on December 8, the minor was raped continuously for six months by his father, who used to force her to consume alcohol before committing the crime.

The incidence came to light when the child was taken to a psychiatrist by mother following some changes in her behaviour, police said.

Each police station in Delhi will have two woman sub-inspectors and seven woman constables as part of enhanced policing measures in the backdrop of brutal gang rape of a girl in the capital.

CRPF jawan arrested for raping differently-abled woman

A CRPF jawan was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a differently-abled woman in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district.

Police said that five CRPF jawans had gone to the market in Chaulduwa area in Lakhimpur town and two of them allegedly raped the woman.

Police visited the spot and arrested one of the CRPF jawans. The woman was taken to a local hospital and the matter is being investigated, police said.

Harassed by neighbour, 18-year-old girl attempts suicide

An 18-year-old girl attempted suicide on Thursday by setting herself ablaze ofter being constantly harassed by a neighbour in Rajasthan’s Alwar town, police said. The neighbour has been arrested.

The girl sustained 90 per cent burn injuries and is battling for life at a hospital, they said. According to police, the incident took place at Ramnagar Colony in the town, some 150 km from Jaipur.

To escape molester, woman jumps from speeding train

A woman jumped from a speeding express train suffering injuries on her head and legs to escape from molesters who were identified as Army jawans near Ara junction in Bihar’s Bhojpur district on Thursday, officials said.

Bhojpur District Magistrate Pratima S Verma told PTI that the woman from Darjeeling in West Bengal jumped out of the 14055 UP Dibrugarh-Delhi Brahmaputra Express at Jagjivan Halt to escape from the clutches of the molesters.

Panel to suggest cost cutting measures for Air India

The government on Thursday formed a panel to suggest measures to cut rising operation costs of Air India after the national carrier was found to have suffered an average net loss of Rs 404 crore a month March-October last year.

The five-member committee is chaired by Ravindra H Dholakia, professor of economics and public systems at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. The committee is expected to submit its report within two months, the civil aviation ministry said in an official statement.

Angered at treatment, patient shoots at Ghaziabad doctor

Angered over maltreatment, a “mentally instable” patient who is a doctor himself attempted to kill his medical consultant in Ghaziabad on Thursday, police said. The incident occurred in Narendra Mohan Hospital under the Sahibabad police station.

“Dr Kiran Pal, who had been in government job as a medical officer in Uttar Pradesh, had been suffering from mental instability. In September last year, he suffered from malaria and remained under the treatment of Dr Sanjay Gupta,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Shiv Shankar Yadav.

CRPF jawan tries to rape woman, held

A CRPF jawan was on Thursday night arrested for allegedly trying to rape and molest a woman near a forest area in North Lakhimpur town of Assam, a senior official said.

Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Anwaruddin Chowdhury said the jawan, along with four to five other men, attempted to molest and rape the woman this evening.

He said there was no rape but attempted rape and only the jawan tried to sexually assault the woman.

The jawan was arrested and kept in North Lakhimpur police station, Chowdhury added.

‘Will consider sentiments of people before Telangana decision’

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Botsa Satyanrayana on Thursday said sentiments of people from various regions of the state will be taken into consideration before arriving at a decision on separate Telanagana state.

“Congress leaders from the state have to abide by the decision of the party high command on the issue”, Satyanarayana told reporters here.

Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had told an all-party meeting held last week in New Delhi that the Centre would decide on Telangana in one month.
