Holding Minorities Convention in the hotel erected on Wakf land is deplorable

Mr. Hamid Mohammed Khan, President, Movement for Peace and Justice regretted that Minorities convention is being proposed to be held in the hotel which has been constructed on Wakf land. He demanded the organizers of the convention to change the venue of the meeting, otherwise it would be construed that they are supporting the illegal possession of wakf land and the hotel owner.

Mr. Hamid Mohammed Khan told that holding Minorities Convention by Congress leaders is appreciable because by reviewing the issues pertaining to Minorities, effective representation could be made to the Govt.

Lagadapati claims to quit politics if the state is bifurcated

United Andhra supporter and Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal has claimed that he would not continue in politics if the State is divided on regional lines. Ami Bera named on US House panel on foreign affairs

California physician Ami Bera, who has become the third Indian-American member of the US House of Representatives, has been named on three prestigious committees on foreign affairs, science, space and technology. Bera’s parents migrated to the US from India in the 1950s.

Democrat Bera,47, who represents California’s 7th Congressional district in the House, follows Amritsar-born Dalip Singh Saund, who represented a California district from 1957 to 1963, and Louisiana’s current governor Bobby Jindal, who was a member from his state from 2005 to 2008.

Gavaskar, Imran blame IPL for India’s poor show

Detention during protest: HC asks police commissioner to reply

The Delhi High Court today asked the city government and police chief to respond to a youth’s allegation that he was “illegally detained” for 10 days and was not allowed to take part in anti-rape protests.

Justice S P Garg also issued notices to the SHO and the ACP of Tilak Marg and Parliament Street police stations respectively and sought their replies by January 7.

US House of Representatives approves $9.7-bn Sandy relief

The US House of Representatives Friday passed a legislation that would make payments worth $9.7 billion to insurance claims related to Hurricane Sandy.

The bill to allow the National Flood Insurance Program to increase its borrowing authority was approved by the Republican-controlled House with a 354-67 vote, Xinhua reported.

The bill was the first of two steps House Speaker John Boehner said he would take to meet the demands of relief for those affected by Sandy.

He also promised a vote Jan 15 to provide over $50 billion dollars of aid.

Visa to Miandad doesn’t change Dawood’s status for India: govt

The government today made it clear that the issuance of visa to former Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad, a relative of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, did not reflect any change in status of the Mumbai serial bomb blasts case mastermind as far as India is concerned. Miandad’s son Junaid is married to Mahrukh, the daughter of Dawood, who is wanted in India in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. “There has not been any change as far as Dawood Ibrahim is concerned. His position remains exactly the same,” a top government source said.

HC resolves dispute between two Sunni Muslim communities

The Chhattisgarh High Court resolved a dispute between two Sunni Muslim communities in Rajnandgaon over burial of the body of an elderly Deobandi Muslim woman, whose body was lying unburied, following denial of space to her at the burial ground belonging to the Barelvi Muslim community. Disposing of a petition filed by the deceased’s son Hasim Memon praying for space in the burial ground for his mother Zubeda Memon’s burial, the High Court directed the Barelvi Muslim mosque management to immediately provide space for the purpose, the petitioner’s lawyer Prakash Tiwari said.

13-year-old gang-raped for ‘stealing’ mobile; five arrested

A 13-year-old girl in Tinsukia district of upper Assam was allegedly gang-raped by four persons on suspicion that she had stolen a mobile phone of one of them, police said today. Five persons, including a woman, were arrested. The incident occurred at Sukanpukhuri tea estate under Makum police station on the intervening night of January 2-3 after one of the accused, Jogeshwar Mali, lost his cellphone. His wife Tusu suspected that the girl, who is from the same tea estate, had stolen the mobile.

Saudi doctors reject calls for women only hospitals

Saudi doctors have rejected calls to set up hospitals exclusively for women, saying that the suggestion to rule out medical cross gender examination was highly unpractical.

The call, according to Gulf News, was issued by Saudi citizens who said that they wanted only women doctors to look after them whenever they needed to go to a hospital, local Arabic daily Al Sharq reported.

Khalid Al Ghadhiya, a social worker, said that women’s hospitals would help meet the health needs of Saudi women in a much more comfortable setting.

Senior Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Andhra Pradesh home minister Kodela Siva Prasad was granted bail after he voluntarily surrendered before a judicial magistrate. A case under six sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him for staging a dharna at a police station at Narasaraopet, Guntur district, on 23 January last year, It may recalled that the TDP had launched an agitation on 23 January last year, protesting against malpractices in the preparation of electoral rolls for the election to co-operative bodies.

Bus conductor arrested for raping minor

A conductor of a private bus service was arrested today for allegedly raping a minor girl, police said. Praveen Singh, a resident of Sitarambagh, threatened and forcibly took the girl last night to a deserted place at Necklace Road and sexually assaulted her, Police said quoting the girl’s complaint. After committing the crime, the accused dumped the girl, who with the help of locals approached the Ramgopalpet Police and registered the complaint, police said. Case against policemen for harassing young man

A case has been registered against three policemen in the metropolis for allegedly harassing a young man after which he self-immolated last month and died of his injuries on January 1. Police sources said the family members of Mir Aminul Islam demanded action against the three policemen for harassing the young man who had taken a rape victim to Karaya police station to file a complaint. Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission Ashok Ganguly told PTI here that the Commission has sought a report from the police within two weeks.

Ahmedabad court acquits 48 accused in 2002 rioting case

A court here today acquitted 48 accused in four cases of rioting and arson, related to post-Godhra riots of 2002. The cases had been tried together in the city civil and sessions court. Judge M K Dave, while acquitting the accused, held that prosecution failed to bring enough evidence, and the accused should get benefit of doubt. All of them were out on bail. During the riots following the train burning incident at Godhra on February 27, 2002, a mob set on fire some units in Vatva industrial area of GIDC here. Nobody was injured in the fire, but property was damaged.

Charge sheet in a rape case in four days

Sirohi police in Rajasthan today set a new record by submitting charge sheet in a rape case in just four days. “The investigating officer completed his probe in 95 hours and submitted charge sheet in a local court,” SP Sirohi Lovely Katiyar said. “The victim lodged an FIR with Anaddara police station on December 31. She blamed that his known person Jagya, aged around 50 years, raped her in an isolated area in Dabali village on the night of December 30,” Investigating Officer Bahadur Singh said.

Woman alleges rape; father-in-law, brother-in-law arrested

A 35-year-old woman has filed a complaint against her father-in-law and brother-in-law, accusing them of raping her repeatedly over the past three years, in Halvad taluka of Surendranagar district. Police Sub-Inspector A P Patel told PTI that both the men had been arrested and sent to judicial custody. The victim did not file a complaint earlier due to family pressure. She approached the police last evening, he said.
