Wikipedia ‘losing English-language editors’

Wikipedia has lost many of its English-language editors in the past 5 years, which is crippling its ability to keep pace with its mission to be an online source of knowledge, a study has revealed.

The study, led by Aaron Halfaker of the University of Minnesota, found that the number of “collaborators” or volunteer editors have declined from around 56,000 in 2007 to about 35,000 at the end of 2012, the Herald Sun reported.

NASA Curiosity set to drill into 1st Martian rock

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity is very close to drilling into its first rock on the Red Planet, with the set-up operation likely to begin next week, it has been revealed.

According to lead scientist John Grotzinger, after breaking for the holidays, the mission team would be raring to undertake the task in the coming days.

The robot has driven about 650m from its landing site, dropping down into a depression known as Yellowknife Bay.

It is in this depression that the target rock will probably be chosen, the BBC reported.

`KBC 6` gets it Rs.5 crore winner in Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney

Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney, a Punjabi woman, has emerged as the winner of Rs.5 crore on TV game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 6’ (KBC).

Sawhney, a home tutor and a resident of Mumbai, couldn`t believe she had cracked the jackpot, until the show`s host, megastar Amitabh Bachchan hugged her.

“I couldn`t believe that I won! Mr. Bachchan had to come and hug me for me to believe that I have won Rs.5 crore. My husband also had to come and tell me so,” she told IANS.

The episode featuring her victory will be aired next week.

Her plan is to donate a part of the money for prayer rituals.

‘Bigg Boss 6’: Salman is not God, says Sapna Bhavnani post eviction

Celebrity hair-stylist Sapna Bhavnani, who was evicted from the 6th edition of `Bigg Boss,` would have “wanted” cartoonist Aseem Trivedi or Gulabi Gang leader Sampat Pal to have won the reality show.

Aseem, who was earlier arrested on charges of sedition for his cartoons, and Sampat Pal were evicted from the show in the initial days. They were known to be close to Sapna.

“I thought that Alag Che (it`s different) was the concept and would have wanted one of my role models to win the show. I would have wanted either Aseem or Sampat to win,” she said.

Protein missing in fat tissue `favours bad over good fat`

Something more than overeating and a lack of exercise causes the body to store more fat and burn less energy – a protein called p62, researchers have claimed.

These findings indicate that p62 might make a promising target for new therapies aimed at curbing obesity.

“Without p62 you’re making lots of fat but not burning energy, and the body thinks it needs to store energy,” Jorge Moscat, lead author of the study, said.

“It’s a double whammy,” he said.

In a breakthrough, scientists have for the first time created cancer-killing cells which can be directly injected into patients.

Researchers in Japan have created cancer-specific killer T cells, the cells naturally occur in small numbers, but it is hoped injecting huge quantities back into a patient could turbo-charge the immune system, the `Daily Mail` reported.

Researchers at the RIKEN Research Centre for Allergy and Immunology revealed they have succeeded for the first time in creating cancer-specific, immune system cells called killer T lymphocytes, the `Daily Mail` reported.

Toyota has released an exclusive video showing a self-drive car safety technology ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week.

The car maker revealed a video clip of a Lexus fitted with safety features designed to minimise car crashes.

The technology includes on-board radar and video cameras to monitor the road, the surroundings, and the driver, the BBC reports.

According to the report, a Toyota spokesman said that the car can also communicate with other vehicles.

Irrigation Minister Sudarshan Reddy said that only the high powered committee would be monitoring the Polavaram tenders.

“The issue is not under our purview. It is the high power committee of senior officials that will be looking after the issue,” he said. The documents submitted by the companies that participated in the bidding process are being verified by the Committee, he said.
