Plane with 1.5 ton gold held in Turkey

A cargo plane carrying 1.5 ton of gold from Ghana to Dubai has been held at Istanbul airport for four days due to missing documents, a media report said Sunday.

The Airbus-A300 F type cargo, belonging to a Turkish airline, arrived at Ataturk Airport Jan 1 for refuelling, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The plane was locked up and sealed after the crew failed to present the necessary documents. Some reports said the plane came from Algeria and was destined for another country.

CPI-M Abdur Rezzak Molla in hospital after attack

Veteran CPI-M leader and former West Bengal minister Abdur Rezzak Molla was admitted to a hospital here with injuries after he was allegedly attacked by Trinamool members Sunday.

CPI-M leader Surya Kanta Mishra accused Trinamool Congress legislator Arabul Islam of leading the attack in South 24 Parganas’ Bhangar area.

“(They) assaulted Molla when he went to Bhangar to visit our party office, which was set on fire by Trinamool workers last night,” Mishra said.

US drones kill 16 in Pakistan

At least 16 people were killed and seven injured after US drone strikes hit militant hideouts in Pakistan’s tribal area of South Waziristan, a mountainous region bordering Afghanistan, Geo News reported.

Earlier reports said 12 people were killed and eight wounded while three militant hideouts were destroyed as US drones fired eight missiles in Bobar area.

South Waziristan is home to militants of the Hakim Ullah Mehsud group of the Pakistan Taliban and Haqqani network.

SC wants overhaul of system to deter crimes against women

Lending its voice to the country wide demand for strong laws to ensure the safety and security of women, the Supreme Court called for a revamp of the system to provide for stringent punishment in cases of crimes against women.

“A complete overhaul of the system is a must in the form of deterrent punishment for the offenders so that we can effectively deal with the problem,” a bench of the apex court comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, in a recent judgment.

Gang-rape victim’s father wants daughter named

The father of Delhi’s gang-rape victim has said he wants his daughter’s name revealed, saying it only will give courage to other women.

In an interview to British publication “The Sunday People”, the man said: “We want the world to know her real name. My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, she died while protecting herself.”

As per law, the identity of victims of sexual assault cannot be revealed. Delhi Police refused to comment on the interview.

The 23-year-old woman was raped and tortured in a moving bus Dec 16. She died in a Singapore hospital Dec 29.

US drone strikes kill 12 in Pakistan

At least 12 people were killed and eight injured when US drones fired a number of missiles at different places in Pakistan’s tribal area of South Waziristan Sunday, Geo News reported.

Three militant hideouts were destroyed as US drones fired eight missiles also in Bobar area.

Indian-Americans in Chicago, led by students of two leading universities, held a protest meet and candlelight vigil in memory of the Delhi gang-rape victim and sought change in India’s rape laws and strict conviction of the accused to help reduce crime against women.

Indian students pursuing graduate studies at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University organised the meet on Friday to condemn the brutal gang-rape of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student who died in a Singapore hospital after battling for life for almost two weeks.

IAF to deploy helicopter squadron near Indo-Pak border

IAF Chief Air Marshal N A K Browne will inaugurate the medium-lift helicopter complex for the new squadron of its latest Mi-17 V5 helicopters at Phalodi airbase near the Indo-Pak border here tomorrow.

This may be seen as Indian Air Force strengthening its presence along the Pakistan border by deploying the squadron, comprising about 15 aircraft.

The helicopters can undertake all weather, day and night operations in any kind of terrain, defence spokesperson Col S D Goswami said.

Indian troops kill Pakistani soldier: Pakistan

Pakistan Sunday accused Indian troops of killing a Pakistani soldier in the Kashmir region.

Indian soldiers violated the Line of Control (LoC) and attacked a checkpost in Bagh sector, Geo News quoted the army’s Inter-Services Public Relations as saying.

The checkpost at Haji Pir sector is located about 200 km from Islamabad.

An official statement said the Indian firing wounded two soldiers, one of whom succumbed to his injuries. It said the Indian attack was repulsed.

Boy killed in neighbours’ quarrel

A five-year-old boy was murdered in Tripura in connection with an old quarrel between two neighbours, police said Sunday. The killer, an 18-year-old, has been arrested.

The victim, Sibam Das, went missing Dec 23. His decomposed body with legs and hands tied was recovered from a ceiling of a neighbour’s house Saturday evening, a police official told reporters.

The boy’s mouth was stuffed with cloth.

Police arrested Pritam Dey and said the crime took place at Bamkumari in the outskirts of the capital.

Eight militants were killed and three hideouts destroyed during a security operation launched by the Pakistan Army Sunday in the tribal Orakzai Agency, Xinhua reported.

The 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist who was gang-raped Dec 16 suffered grievous internal injuries due to sexual assault with an iron rod that finally led to her death. Lawyers and activists are demanding that the legal definition of rape be broadened to include digital rape and sexual assault by a foreign object.

Lawyers and activists say sexual assault by a foreign object and digital rape – inserting a finger – without the woman’s consent should also be brought under Section 375 which defines rape. The imprisonment can range from seven years to life.

Three killed in truck accident in Bihar

Three persons were killed and three others were missing when a truck fell into a pond in Bihar’s Sheohar district in the wee-hours of Sunday, police said.

During the period, India received USD 185.7 billion foreign inflows, according to the data.

According to experts, the main reason for the maximum inflows into Maharashtra and NCR is substantial improvement in the infrastructure and pro-active approach of the respective governments.

“Infrastructure in these areas have improved considerably and that is making them attractive destination for foreign investment,” an official said.

Pakistan’s response to India’s ‘wishlist’ with regard to those behind 2008 Mumbai terror attacks is ‘critical’ to ‘substantive movement’ in the bilateral dialogue, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid said on Sunday.

What Islamabad has done so far about it is ‘not to our satisfaction’, he told PTI in an interview while taking stock of the Indo-Pak ties in the year gone by.

Khurshid did not see controversial statements made by Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik while in India recently as a ‘setback’ in the dialogue process.
