Openers need to be more patient: Dhoni

With the England One-Day International (ODI) series round the corner, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said his openers needed to show more patience especially when the ball is moving.

Opener and explosive batsman Virender Sehwag was dropped from the third and final ODI against Pakistan here Sunday. His replacement Ajinkya Rahane failed to impress while Gautam Gambhir once again gave his wicket away cheaply.

“Our openers need to show more patience, especially when the ball is moving around,” Dhoni told reporters here in the post match press conference.

Air India Express to have a permanent CEO

Air India Express, the budget airline of Air India, will soon have a permanent CEO, said Minister of State for Civil Aviation K.C. Venugopal Sunday.

“The notification for it would be coming out in the next few days,” Venugopal told reporters here, after an interaction with the airline staff here.

He also said that Air India Express headquarters would be shifted from Mumbai to Kochi in a phased manner.

“Special incentives will now be given to the employees so as to improve the customer service,” said Venugopal.

Two Delhi gang-rape accused want to turn state’s witness

Two accused in the brutal Dec 16 gang-rape of the paramedical intern Sunday expressed their desire to become witnesses on behalf of the state in the case.

Appearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Jyoti Kler, after the expiry of their judicial custody, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma said they wanted to be witnesses in the case and refused to take the service of legal aid counsel.

The two other accused in the case, Ram Singh and his brother Mukesh requested legal aid for their defence.

India’s bowling and fielding made the difference: Misbah

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq said it was fine bowling and superb fielding by India that prevented his team from making a clean-sweep of the series in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Sunday.

“We had a golden chance for a whitewash but we have to give credit to the Indian fielders and bowlers. They were brilliant in the field and saved 35 runs, which cost us the match,” said Misbah, after India pulled off an unlikely win while defending a paltry total of 167.

Misbah said it was not an easy track to bat on.

Delhi BJP suspends rape-charged leader

The Delhi BJP unit Sunday suspended Yogesh Attrey from the party following charges of rape against him.

“We got the first hand information through media and we have suspended him. It’s our moral responsibility to suspend him. He will not be a party member till he is acquitted in the case,” said Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit chief Vijender Gupta.

Attrey, 40, a member of the party’s Delhi Pradesh working committee was arrested Friday from Rohini in north Delhi for allegedly raping a woman.

He was sent to two days of police custody.

Congress declares candidates for Meghalaya polls

The Congress Sunday declared its candidates for the upcoming polls to the 60-member Meghalaya assembly.

The list, released by party general secretary Oscar Fernandes, has 55 candidates beloning to scheduled tribes.

The term of Meghalaya assembly will end March 10 this year.

The state has over 13 lakh voters.

CPI-M leader in hospital after attack, Trinamool dubs it drama

Veteran CPI-M leader and former West Bengal minister Abdur Rezzak Molla was admitted to a hospital here with injuries after he was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress workers, led by a former party legislator, Sunday.

Terming the incident as a mere “scuffle”, the ruling Trinamool, however, said the brawl was provoked by the CPI-M leader and he was now “resting” in hospital after creating a “drama”.

Minor raped in Delhi

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two people, including a juvenile, after they barged into her house when she was alone, police said Sunday. Both have been apprehended.

According to police, the victim, a class 9 student, is a resident of Mayur Vihar area.

“On Friday, when the girl was alone in her house, the 17-year-old juvenile, who lives in the neighbourhood, and the other man barged into her house and both took turns to rape her,” said a police officer.

Both the rapists then fled after warning her of dire consequences if she revealed the incident.

Two-yr-old raped in Bengal

A two-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an 18-year-old youth at Minapara village in North Dinajpur district, police said on Sunday.

An FIR lodged by the victim’s father said that the baby was raped when her mother went to wash clothes in a pond leaving her sleeping on the side of the pond on Saturday.

The accused was arrested and the baby was admitted to Raiganj District Hospital, police said.

A local court today sent the accused to 14 days judicial custody, sources said.

Omar visits under-construction Peer-e-Dastgeer Sah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday visited the under-construction shrine of Peer-e-Dastgeer Sahib here, which was gutted in a mysterious fire last June, to take stock of the work.

Interacting with the officers of constructing agency, Omar stressed on ensuring the restoration of shrine to its original glory.

He said all aspects of the heritage characteristic of the shrine should be kept in view while completing the restoration work in a time bound manner.

The Chief Minister also paid obeisance at the shrine and prayed for peace and development of the state.

Man sexually assaults daughter in Delhi

A 42-year-old man was arrested in North Delhi for allegedly sexually assaulting his minor daughter three days ago, police said on Sunday

The incident was reported from Burari on January three and the father of the victim was arrested the same day.

The accused, who is living separately due to marital problems, molested the victim and then attempted to sexually assault her.

According to the complaint, the man stripped his daughter and then tried to sexually assault her. The girl screamed and her mother rushed to the spot from the neighbourhood.

Akbar Owaisi to arrive in Hyderabad tonight

MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, who is facing a slew of cases for his alleged hate speeches, will be arriving here on Sunday midnight according to 4Tv.

Akbaruddin, who was in London, was asked by DGP V Dinesh Reddy to return and 4Tv reports say that the Majlis leader will be coming to city.

Akbar has been asked to appear before police on Jan 8 at Nirmal town and on Jan 9 at Nizamabad for questioning with regard to the speeches he delivered at public meetings at Nirmal and Nizamabad towns last month.

50 injured in communal clashes at Dhule

At least 50 people including some policemen were injured after clashes broke out on Sunday between members of two communities at Dhule in north Maharashtra, official sources said.

The violence started at a hotel over a trivial matter and spread to Machibazar and Madhavpura areas of the city, they said, adding police used water cannons to disperse the mob.

Guardian minister for Dhule district Suresh Shetty said around 50 people including some policemen were injured in the clashes. The situation there is tense but under control.

Indira Gandhi’s assassins honoured by Akal Takht

The two killers of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi were honoured by Akal Takht on Sunday, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, on their 24th death anniversary amid presence of a local Akali leader.

Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were hanged on January 6, 1989 after a trial for killing Gandhi in 1984.

Jathedar Gaini Gurbachan Singh presented a ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) to Tirlok Singh, father of Satwant Singh at a function organized by SGPC.

The ‘Jathedar’ also accorded them the status of ‘martyrs of faith’.

Pak Taliban plans to attack Tahir-ul-Qadri’s rally: Malik

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is planning to attack a rally that cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri plans to lead from Lahore to Islamabad on January 14, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said.

Authorities learnt of the Taliban’s plan to target the rally when they intercepted a conversation between Taliban leaders, he said.

He said the transcript of the intercepted conversation was: “We have finalized arrangements for those coming to Islamabad, in which some sick people will be present.”

13 killed in Philippines shootout

Thirteen armed men were killed in a shootout Sunday with a joint team of the police and military in Quezon province of the Philippines, a military spokesperson said.

The shootout, in which a police officer was also injured, occurred in the afternoon at Tanauan village when the police and military personnel manning a checkpoint tried to flag down two sports utility vehicles (SUVs), Xinhua quoted spokesperson Colonel Generoso Bolina as saying.

Instead of stopping at the checkpoint, the suspects shot at the security personnel, prompting the latter to retaliate, the official said.

South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela has recovered from his recent lung infection and a surgical procedure to remove gallstones,according to an announcement today by President Jacob Zuma.

Man arrested for trying to rape minor girl

A case was registered against a 45-year-old man accused of having tried to abuse a 10-year- old girl in a drunken state in Hindupur town of Anantapur district, police said today.

The girl’s parents lodged a complaint against the incident which occurred three days ago and the police arrested accused Ramesh, who is the girl’s neighbour.

The accused was produced before a local court and sent to judicial remand, they added.

College student sets herself ablaze

A 17-year-old student allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at the premises of her college in Athani taluk of the district today, police said.

Priyanka, a second year student of Pre-University Course, set herself ablaze after the evening classes got over and by when everybody had left college, they said.

The reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.

A youth allegedly tried to molest a seven-year-old girl today but was thrashed by locals before
being arrested.

The youth allegedly tried to molest the girl while she was crossing the railway tracks in the afternoon, a senior
Railway Police official said.

Some locals at the BG Yard locality noticed the incident. They caught hold of the accused and assaulted him
before handing him over to the Railway police.

However, the accused denied the charge saying he had tried to stop the girl from crossing the tracks as a train was

Zimbabwean police say eight people died in a bus crash that has brought the traffic accident death toll during the holiday period to the highest on record in the southern African nation.

Police officials in the second city of Bulawayo said today that eight died and 57 were injured yesterday in western
Zimbabwe when their bus, headed for neighboring Botswana, veered off the highway and overturned.

The driver was among the injured.

The central police traffic command said 209 people have died in accidents since December 15. In the same holiday
period last year, 147 people died.

Punjab police yet to file charge sheet in ASI murder case

Punjab police is yet to file a charge sheet in the murder of an ASI here over a month ago, with officials saying it may take some more time as investigations are still on.

Charge sheet is yet to be submitted before the court as the investigations are still under progress. It may take one
more week or so,” Police Commissioner Ram Singh said today.
