‘Progress in pol reconciliation in Lanka may check migration’

Canada, a favourite destination for Tamils affected by the conflict in Sri Lanka since mid-1980s, Sunday said that repeated cases of illegal migration from this country could be checked with progress in political reconciliation.

“We believe there are a mixture of motivations for Sri Lankans seeking (to move out), one of them probably economic opportunity,” Canada’s Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney told reporters here.

Nirmal police visits Akbar Owaisi’s residence,serves second notice

In a surprising move a team of Nirmal Town police this evening arrived the residence of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi’s residence and served second notice asking him to appear before them.

The Nirmal police was accompanied by a team of doctors and they ascertained the health condition of the MIM MLA.

Earlier, Adilabad police confirmed that the MIM leader through his lawyers sought more time on the ground of ill-health. Two lawyers, who reached Nirmal police station on behalf of Owaisi, submitted the doctors’ report.

China urges India-Pakistan dialogue

China Monday said it hopes India and Pakistan will hold talks and solve their differences in a calm and proper manner following a firing incident in Kashmir.

As a neighbor and friend of both countries, China hopes India and Pakistan will work together to maintain peace and stability in south Asia, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing, Inhaul reported.

The Pakistani military said Indian troops crossed the Line of Control (Loc) that divides both countries in Kashmir Sunday and opened fire, killing one Pakistani soldier and injuring another.

Pak Taliban chief’s cousin killed in US drone attack

A cousin of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakimullah Mehsud was among militants killed during a coordinated strike by US drones in South Waziristan tribal region, media reports said on Monday.

Wali Mohammad alias Toofan was killed when the drones targeted three compounds in the mountainous Babar area in South Waziristan, security officials were quoted as saying by the media.

Toofan, 26, was related to both Hakimullah Mehsud and Qari Hussain, a second cousin of the Pakistani Taliban chief and head of the wing responsible for suicide attacks.

Michael Hussey ends career in 11th position

Just-retired veteran Australian batsman Mike Hussey ended his career at 11th in the International Cricket Council`s Test Rankings issued on Monday.

Hussey last achieved the number-one ranking on the batting table in 2008 and is one of seven from Australia after Don Bradman, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Doug Walters, Neil Harvey to break the 900-point barrier.

Hussey achieved the rare distinction in 2007-08 after the second Test against India in Sydney after scores of 41 and 145 not out.

A Canadian astronaut has posted photographs from around the world and onboard the International Space Station while orbiting the Earth, on his Twitter account.

As word spread of his amazing photos, Commander Chris Hadfield’s Twitter follower count shot skyward.

On Sunday night, Hadfield was being followed by more than 89,000 people on his @Cmdr_Hadfield account.

A former Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, Hadfield arrived at the ISS on December 21, aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket.

‘Spare me from death’, Kasab wrote to President in four-line plea

Ajmal Kasab, the face of the dastardly 26/11 terror strike on Mumbai who was hanged on November 21, had begged for “daya” (mercy) from the President through his four-line clemency plea written in elementary Urdu, which was rejected.

The hand written petition dated September 12, 2012,

which has been made public more than a month after Kasab was hanged, shows glaring Urdu language errors.

The application has been provided to Lucknow-based activist Urvashi Sharma under the Right to Information Act.

Karzai leaves for official visit to US

Afghan President Hamid Karzai Monday left for a three-day official visit to the US where he will meet his American counterpart Barack Obama and discuss key issues including a bilateral security agreement, the Presidential Palace said.

The discussions would focus on security, economic and political transition in Afghanistan, equipping and strengthening of Afghan security forces, and the peace process, Xinhua reported.

Talks between Washington and Kabul on the bilateral security agreement formally began in Kabul Nov 15, 2012.

Protein behind dry and scaly skin in eczema discovered

Scientists including an Indian-origin researcher have discovered a malfunctioning protein that triggers dry, itchy and inflamed skin lesions in a common type of eczema.

Researchers at Oregon State University found that the protein Ctip2 that controls body fats that keep skin healthy and hydrated, can cause atopic dermatitis, a common type of eczema if it is not performing properly.

Eczema allows significant loss of fluids through the skin, allowing allergens to penetrate, the `Daily Mail` reported.

George Bush”s ”friend” arrested for not paying hotel bills in Pakistan

A 60-year-old imposter, who claimed to be an international journalist and having links with former US president George W. Bush and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, was arrested for not paying his hotel bills in Islamabad. He was however later released. Zahid Ghani checked into a local hotel in On September last year, telling the receptionist that he was a regular guest at the hotel since 2001 and the Press Information Department (PID) would pay his bills, reports The Dawn.

Priest arrested for raping colleague’s wife

A 55-year-old priest was arrested for allegedly raping his colleague’s wife at his house here, police said Monday.

The incident took place Jan 1 night when the victim, in her early 30s, was called to the accused Madan Mohan Sharma’s home in Pandav Nagar area in east Delhi on the pretext of making some sweets to offer in the temple and raped.

The victim narrated the incident to her husband who reported the matter to Pandav Nagar Police station the next day.

Afer the victim’s medical test, Sharma was arrested from a hideout late Sunday night as he was absconding after the incident.

British hospitals face closure for covering up blunders

British government hospitals are likely to be threatened with closure if they covered up doctors’ mistakes and poor treatment of patients, following a public inquiry into one of the country’s worst health scandals.

The 11 million pounds (around $18 million) review into serious failings at Stafford Hospital will demand hospitals also face fines while incompetent managers will be weeded out, Daily Express reported.

There will also be better training for nurses and healthcare assistants.

ICC ODI rankings: Jamshed biggest mover, Dhoni in top 5

Pakistan opener Nasir Jamshed has made the biggest move in the latest Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen while Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to the top five. The latest rankings were released Monday, a day after the conclusion of the three-ODI series between rivals India and Pakistan.

Janata Dal-United leader Shivanand Tiwari said Monday that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi were “two sides of the same coin”, attracting censure from the BJP which asked the JD-U leadership to “restrain” Tiwari.

Stomach bugs linked to wetter conditions, storms

Rain and bigger storms could be the cause of more stomach bugs in certain countries, according to new research.

Torrential rain leads drains to overflow, releasing germ and virus riddled water into waterways and if this water is swallowed while engaging in watersports for example, it can make people sick.

According to research, it is more likely to be viruses that cause people to be ill rather than the germs.

The research was carried out as part of a project called Viroclime which aims to improve tools for tracking harmful viruses from human sewage in European waters.

Ranbir to perform with mom Neetu at awards function

This will be a first – Ranbir Kapoor will groove with his mother, actress Neetu Kapoor at an awards night.

The mother-son duo will perform together at the Colors Screen Awards, to be held here Jan 12. Ranbir says his mother is nervous about their performance.

“I will be performing with my mother for the first time. She is nervous for the performance. The rehearsals have not started at the moment, but will start today,” Ranbir said at a press conference here Monday.

In 2012, Ranbir had performed with his father Rishi Kapoor at an awards event abroad. It was a hit show.

Why morphine increases pain in some patients

Researchers are closer to finding out the reason why certain adults and children’s pain gets worse when they treated with morphine.

“Our research identifies a molecular pathway by which morphine can increase pain, and suggests potential new ways to make morphine effective for more patients,” senior author Dr. Yves De Koninck, Professor at Universite Laval in Quebec City said.

The team included researchers from The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, the Institut universitaire en sante mentale de Quebec, the US and Italy.

Madani admitted to hospital for treatment

Kerala-based PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, lodged in central prison here after his arrest in connection with the 2008 serial bomb blasts, has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment of diabetes.

Assistant Superintendent of Parappana Agrahara jail D S Hatti said Madani has been admitted to Soukhya hospital in Whitefield near here for the treatment of diabetes and related eye complication.

His wife and son would be allowed to attend him at the hospital, Hatti said.
