Though the local MLA showing personal interest had announced to repair the cistern within a month but the work has not yet begun even after 4 months.

HC issues notice to cops on section 144 of CrPC at India Gate

The city police was asked today by the Delhi High Court to explain as to how a special executive magistrate can be vested with the power to impose prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC for up to six months despite the same being contrary to the fundamental rights of citizens.

“Issue notice (to Delhi Police). You file your counter within two weeks as to how the government can delegate the power to invoke section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrpC) for a period extending up to six months.

HC orders daily hearing of paternity case against N D Tiwari

A youth’s paternity suit to declare N D Tiwari as his biological father was ordered to be heard on a day-to-day basis by the Delhi High Court today after the veteran Congress leader refused to settle the issue through mediation.

“The local commissioner is hereby directed to conduct, preferably, the hearing on a day-to-day basis,” Justice Manmohan said.

The direction came after the counsel for the 88-year-old Congress leader refused to settle the lawsuit out of the court through mediation, saying there was a possibility that the medical evidence was not hundred percent accurate.

Man beats up 4-year-old daughter, put her in fridge

A man mercilessly beat up his four-year-old daughter and kept her in a refrigerator for a while in Narayanapuram area in East Godavari district, police said.

The man, identified as Basha, was thrashed by his neighbours for his act before police took him into custody. They also rescued the girl.

The victim, who received severe injuries, was admitted to Government General Hospital, where her condition was stated to be stable, they added.

Notice to police against curbs at India Gate

The Delhi High Court Tuesday issued notice to Delhi Police on a plea challenging the imposition of restrictions on the gathering of people at and around India Gate during anti-rape protests.

A division bench of Chief Justice D. Murugesan and Justice V.K. Jain sought a response from police within two weeks and posted the matter for Feb 6.

“How can special executive magistrate extend the period to impose Section 144 of CrPC when the power lies only with the state government to extend the period,” the bench observed.

Pakistan plans model village to honour IT wizkid

Authorities in Pakistan are planning to build a model village in honour of late Arfa Karim, an information technology genius who at nine years became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional.

Arfa’s ancestral village in Punjab, Ramdewali Chak No.4, will be soon developed into a model village at a cost of Rs.140 million, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

A monument will be built at her grave, and a library and a museum will also be established within the model village.

Drone strikes kill seven in Pakistan

At least seven suspected militants were killed in two drone attacks in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, Geo News reported Tuesday.

One drone fired three missiles at a house in Haider Khel area in North Waziristan late Monday killing four people.

Missiles fired in the nearby Khaso Khel area killed another three people.

On Sunday, Pakistani Taliban leader Wali Muhammad alias Toofan Mehsud, said to head the group’s suicide wing, was among 16 people killed in a drone strike in South Waziristan.

Wali Muhammad was the cousin of Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

Akbar Owaisi undergoes medical tests

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi Tuesday went for medical tests at a government-run hospital here on the directions of police to ascertain if he was fit to face questioning in a hate speech case.

The legislator with tight police security left his house in Banjara Hills for Gandhi Hospital at 10.30 a.m. after a team of police officials from Nirmal town of Adilabad district served a notice, asking him to undergo the medical tests.

A senior police official said after the medical tests, they would decide their next legal action in the case.

Congress, MIM delaying Akbar Owaisi’s arrest: BJP

The BJP Tuesday said the delay in arresting Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi in a hate speech case was a “fixed match” between the Congress and MIM.

“They (Congress and MIM) are hand in glove when Akbaruddin Owaisi speaks the language of fire. He definitely has the tacit support of either local or central Congress leaders,” BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said here.

Owaisi, who is wanted for questioning over his alleged hate speeches made in December, returned from London Monday. He was Tuesday taken to a hospital for tests.

ED attaches Jagan’s assets worth Rs 143 cr

The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth Rs 143.74 crore in connection with its probe in the money laundering case against YSR Congress party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The attachment order, under criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), is the third by the agency after it issued two separate attachment orders of Rs 51 crore and Rs 71 crore earlier, in this case.

The agency, according to sources, has few more similar orders in the pipeline as it plans to build a water tight case against Jagan and his associates.

NATO soldier shot dead in Afghanistan

A soldier with the NATO-led coalition forces was killed when a man in Afghan army uniform opened fire at coalition troops, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

The man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform shot at International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members Monday, the coalition said.

It did not say whether the shooter was killed or captured.
