Four incidents of sexual assault come to light in Andhra

Even as the nation mourns the death of Delhi gang-rape victim, four incidents of sexual assault, including two involving policemen, were reported in Andhra Pradesh. Among the victims are two minor girls.

Police in Krishna district of coastal Andhra region booked a constable, D. Venkat Rao, on charges of raping a woman.

A woman, deserted by her husband, said the policeman raped her after befriending her when she lodged a complaint against her family.

The incident took place a month ago, but only came to light Saturday after the woman lodged a complaint.

Hyderabad-Delhi AP Express cancelled

Railways have cancelled Hyderabad-New Delhi AP Express, scheduled to depart Hyderabad at 6.25 a.m. Monday.

A spokesman of South Central Railway (SCR) said train no. 12723 Hyderabad-New Delhi AP Express was cancelled in view of abnormal late running of the incoming pairing train due to heavy fog in northern India.

“Full refund of fare will be given to the passengers on cancellation of their tickets, which have already been booked,” said a statement from SCR.

The AP Express has been running late by six to 12 hours for last few days. The train left at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Telangana, not in near future: TG

State Minister TG Venkatesh said that the situation is not conducive for a separate Telangana.

“It that is the case, Congress would have called the leaders and given the nod,” he said.

The question of Telangana does not arise till 2014, he said. If such a thing is to happen, TRS will be merged into Congress and the decision will be announced, he said.

Two held for illegal possession, sale of explosives

The North Zone team of Commissioner’s Task Force on Sunday arrested two persons for illegally possession, transportation and sale of explosives.

The police team also seized 1300 gelatin sticks, 2825 electric detonators, a Maruthi Swift, Rs 7000 cash, relevant records and three cell phones from their possession. The arrested accused persons have been identified as Maddi Madhusudhan Reddy (33), a contractor of Ghatkesar and Gandikota Ramesh (40) of Tukkaramgate.

Youth should use education in service of humanity: President

President Pranab Mukherjee today asked the country’s youth to follow the “book of humanity” rather than using education to secure a good job or income.

The purpose of education is not a good job or income but using the acquired knowledge in the service of the nation and humankind, he said.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Mukherjee said, “The Father of our nation had said real education consists of drawing the best out of yourself. What better book can there be than the book of humanity?”

Stop wearing Skirts in Schools: Bjp MLA’s Demand

A BJP MLA in Rajasthan has demanded a ban on skirts as uniform in schools to keep girls away from “men’s lustful gazes”.

Alwar (Urban) legislator Banwari Lal Singhal has written a letter to the state chief secretary C K Mathew, demanding that skirts should be replaced by trousers or Salwar-kameez.

“The intention of this demand is to keep girl students away from men’s lustful gazes and for their comfort in hot and cold weather conditions,” Singhal told PTI.

“It is not a Talibani type of thinking or restriction on girls’ freedom or right but a concern for their safety,” he said.

Nearly 400 reported killed in Syria

As many as 397 people were killed in Syria Saturday in what could be the country’s bloodiest day since the start of the uprising 21 months ago, the opposition Local Coordination Committees (LCC) claimed Sunday.

“By the end of Saturday the LCC managed to document 397 martyrs (including more than 20 children and 20 women),” the activist group reported on its website.

The figure includes 220 people who were “field executed in Deir Balbah” outside Homs city after the Syrian forces regained the area, the LCC said.

Drunken drivers to be focus of road safety week

Awareness on the pitfalls of drunken driving will be the focus of the Road Safety Week campaign-2013, which will be observed across the country from Jan 1-7 next year, an official said.

“The Road Safety Week this year has focused on the risks to road users because of drunk driving,” said K.K. Kapila, chairman of International Road Federation (IRF), a Geneva-based global body for road safety.

Organised by the ministry of road transport and highways and the India chapter of IRF, a meet with a theme — ‘Stay Alive, Don’t Drink and Drive’ — will be organised in the national capital.

Revenue officer held in rape case

A Village Revenue Officer (VRO) of Nandivada in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly raping his colleague, police said today.

Nandivada VRO B Pandu was arrested after a rape case was registered against him last evening, police said adding the accused has been identified as one B Pandu.

The victim had joined his office as his assistant around four months ago, Nandivada police sub-inspector B Jaya Raju said.

Gangrape victim cremated away from public glare

The mortal remains of the gangrape victim, who lost her brave battle for life in a Singapore hospital yesterday, were consigned to flames here early today away from public glare, hours after her body was received by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the small hours.

The funeral pyre was lit by her sobbing father at a crematorium in the subcity Dwarka after traumatised relatives and friends said their final prayers at a ritual at the house where the girl lived in southwest Delhi.

Man serving life sentence for killing wife let off by HC

The Bombay High Court has quashed a lower court verdict which sentenced a 40-year-old farmer to rigorous imprisonment for life for murdering his wife, saying there was no evidence to show that he was present in the house where the body of the victim was found.

On the basis of circumstantial evidence, a Sessions Court had found Pandurang Deokar, a farmer, guilty of killing his wife Nirmala, whose body was found in their house at Tembhurni village in Solapur district on September 7, 2003.

Hundreds of protesters gather at Jantar Mantar in Delhi

Hundreds of protesters have begun gathering at Jantar Mantar, in the heart of the Indian capital, to mourn the death of the 23-year-old gang-rape victim who was cremated here Sunday morning.

Police have imposed prohibitory orders around India Gate and Raisina Hill and barricaded all roads leading to the area, as well as shutting down 10 Metro stations in central Delhi.

Comprising mostly students, the protesters are demanding tougher anti-rape laws.

UN chief mourns Indian gang-rape victim’s death

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his “deep sorrow” at the death Saturday of an Indian woman at a Singapore hospital 13 days after being gang-raped by six men in a moving bus in Delhi.

Also Saturday night, UN Women, the main UN body dedicated to the protection of the rights of women and girls, mourned the death of the Indian gang-rape victim, Xinhua reported.

The incident has evoked widespread protests in different parts of the country, especially in the capital city of India, by largely young crowd seeking justice for the victim and safety of women in India.

Teenager molested in bus in Delhi, conductor arrested

A teenaged girl was molested allegedly by a conductor in a bus here late last night, close on the heels of the brutal gangrape of a young woman.

The incident took place in Mandi House in central Delhi at around 11 pm yesterday and the victim is a 16-year-old girl.

“The girl had boarded cluster orange bus. When it reached near Mandi House around 11 pm, she was molested by the conductor of another bus who was travelling in the same vehicle,” a senior police official said.

He said the girl had left the house angry with her family.
