Three killed in fire-cracker unit explosion in AP

Two women and a child were charred and four other labourers seriously injured when a consignment of fire-crackers to be used in New Year celebrations exploded at a manufacturing unit in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

The condition of one of the injured women is critical as she has received 90 percent burns in the mishap that occurred at Sri Bhavani fire-cracker manufacturing unit in Kommarapalem village between 2-3 PM, they said.

Student gang-raped in Bihar, two held

Two people have been arrested for allegedly abducting and gang-raping a student in a Bihar village, police said on Sunday.

Police said the intermediate student was abducted at gunpoint on Friday in Vasudevpur village in Samastipur district, around 100 km from here, when she was returning home on a bicycle from a coaching class.

“She said the accused threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm and gang-raped her first in a sugarcane field and later at a house,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said.

Five metro stations opened

Five out of ten metro stations that were closed down for an indefinite period were finally opened in the wake of the death of the gang-rape victim, were opened Sunday afternoon.

Rajiv Chowk, Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Patel Chowk, and Barakhamba stations have been opened. However, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Race Course, Khan Market and Jorbagh still remain closed.

Inter-change facility is available at Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat stations.

India Gate and its adjacent areas in the national capital remain out of bounds for public on Sunday, police said.

In the backdrop of New Delhi gang-rape case, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister R Ashok today said as many as 6,000 public transport buses will be equipped with CCTVs and GPS to provide protection to travelling women.

The state government has decided to install CCTVs and GPS in 6,000 public transport buses to protect women travelling in these vehicles,” Ashok, also the minister for Transport, told reporters here after inaugurating new fleet of city buses.

Two hurt as protesters attack Iraq deputy PM

Two people were wounded when security forces opened fire to disperse protesters who attacked Iraq’s deputy premier today, forcing him to flee a rally he was addressing, an AFP reporter said.

The demonstrators, who have blocked a key highway connecting Iraq to Syria and Jordan for the past week over the

3 in 4 of UK’s ‘danger doctors’ are trained abroad: report

Foreign physicians in the UK will face a more rigorous assessment, after figures showed that the vast majority of doctors who have been struck off were trained abroad, especially in countries like India.

In the last five years, 669 doctors have been either struck off or suspended by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Of those, only 249 were British (37 per cent) while 420 (63 per cent) were trained abroad – whereas one-third of
doctors on the register were trained abroad, and two-thirds in Britain, the Sunday Telegraph reported today.

Girl molested in Guwahati, one arrested

A group of miscreants allegedly molested and tried to abduct a 23-year-old girl from a lonely stretch here last night, police said.

The girl was returning from her office at Bamunimaidam locality here around 8.30 PM last night when she was accosted by the youths on a deserted road, they said.

She fought back when the miscreants tried to forcibly take her away. Hearing her screams, locals rushed out of homes and managed to get hold one of them.

The remaining members of the group, however, managed to run away.

The State Minorities Commission has asked the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) to probe the “serious lapse” of terming the Santosh Bhuvan area of Nalla Sopara in Thane with the derogatory term ‘Chhota
Pakistan’ on its bills.

This is a serious matter. Please inquire into it and inform the Commission about your findings,” State Minority
Commission Chairman Munaf Hakim said in a letter to the MSEB chief.

Manohar Singh admits involvement in Malegaon blasts

One of the key accused in 2006 Malegaon bomb blasts case, Manohar Singh, has confessed to his role in the conspiracy, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) today claimed in a special court here.

Singh, arrested from Hatod in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh yesterday, was produced before the special NIA court here.

It was the first arrest in connection with Maharashtra’s 2006 Malegaon bombing after the role of right-wing groups came to the fore.

Special public prosecutor Rohini Salian told the court that Singh has provided many important leads in connection
with the blasts.

7-year-old boy sodomised

A 7-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by a ragpicker in Jehangirpur area, police said today.

In the complaint lodged at Jehangirpur police station, the boy’s father alleged that his son was playing on the
street when the man saw him alone.

On the pretext of giving the boy chocolate, the accused took him to a lonely stretch and sodomised him.

He fled when the child started bleeding, police said, adding that the accused is absconding.

21 Pak soldiers gunned down by Taliban

The Pakistani Taliban have brutally gunned down 21 security personnel at a cricket ground after abducting them from check posts near the northwestern city of Peshawar, officials said today.

The bullet-riddled bodies of the personnel were found in Frontier Region Peshawar, located a short distance from the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, shortly after midnight.

Cong draft anti-rape bill proposes 30 years jail, chemical castration

Imprisonment up to 30 years for rape convicts has been proposed by the Congress in a draft bill for a tougher law to check crimes against women which could also include chemical castration in rare cases.

The final draft of the Congress’ bill, which is to be submitted to the Justice J S Verma-led Committee set up by the Centre in the wake of the horrific gang-rape of the 23-year-old girl, who died yesterday, has however not been readied yet, sources said today.

Abducted Jharkhand businessman rescued; six held

A scrap dealer of Jharkhand who was abducted by six persons was rescued by police and the kidnappers arrested today from Bihar’s Sheikhpura district, a senior police officer said.

The kidnappers, after abducting the scrap dealer of Deogarh Chanchal Kothari from his business outlet in the
morning were travelling in a vehicle with Kothari.

Acting on a tip off, police stopped the vehicle at Sarwa village under Barbigha police station of Sheikhpura district and apprehended the kidnappers and rescued Kothari, Superintendent of Police Babu Ram said.

4 Delhi residents killed in road mishap

Four members of a family, including a woman and her two children, were killed today on GT road near Ambala city when their car rammed into a stationary truck.

Sachin Gupta (42), his wife Rakhi (38), son Pratyaksh (12) and daughter Vrinda (3), residents of Loha Mandi area of Naraina in New Delhi, were killed, police said.

Gupta along with his family was going to Amritsar from Delhi to celebrate New Year at one of his relatives house.

A case against the truck driver has been registered, police said, adding that a PAN card helped to established
identity of Gupta.

Over 30 youths held in Bhopal for eve-teasing

As many as 36 youths were detained from various parts of the city for allegedly indulging in eve-teasing, police said today.

The youths were held from the New Market area, 10 number bus stop, Manisha Market among others last evening when they were caught passing lewd comments at women.

Acting on tip-offs, police reached the specific spots and nabbed the youths, some of whom are reportedly wards of senior government officials.

Curfew in Pulwama for third day

Curfew continued for third day today in Pulwama town of south Kashmir even as army and police kept passing the buck on to each other over the Friday’s firing on protesters.

A senior official of Pulwama district administration said restrictions were still in place as the sporadic incidents of stone-pelting have continued in the town since Friday.

Nearly 50,000 weapons seized in J&K in 23 yrs of militancy

Twenty-three years of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir have seen security forces recover nearly 50,000 weapons, including 30,859 AK assault rifles, according to a recent report on militancy compiled by the state Home Ministry.

The list of 49,627 weapons recovered till November-end also includes 11,576 pistols and revolvers along with 1,028universal machine guns, 80 carbines, 2,264 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 221 light machine guns/self-loading rifles, 306,303 rifles, 394 sniper rifles, 69 general purpose machine guns and 2,830 rocket boosters.
