Iranian Christian pastor accused of ‘apostasy’ re-arrested ‘to finish jail term’

An Iranian Christian pastor, who was imprisoned in Iran for converting from Islam to Christianity, has been taken into custody again, media sources and people close to the pastor and his family, have said.

Youcef Nadarkhani, 35, had been summoned to return back to Lakan Prison in Rasht, the facility where he served time and was then released, based on the charge that he must complete the remainder of his sentence.

In September, the pastor was acquitted of apostasy, but the court maintained his three-year sentence for evangelizing Muslims, Fox News reports.

US-made Nevro sends a high-frequency electrical pulse through the spine that could revolutionise the treatment of severe back pain, the Daily mail reported.

According to the study, Nevro is 200 times more powerful than presently used National Health Service`s spinal cord stimulators, which use an electrical pulse to combat pain.

The device is deemed less invasive than surgery and also cheaper.

Businessman from Andhra shot dead in US

A businessman from Andhra Pradesh is suspected to have been shot dead by burglars in a supermarket in Cincinnati, Ohio, US.

G. Venkat Reddy was found dead in the supermarket he used to run, the businessman’s family in Karimnagar town was informed late Sunday.

He was allegedly attacked by the burglars, who escaped with 800 dollars. Venkat Reddy, 48, had gone to the US 12 years ago. His wife Kavitha is a software engineer in the US and they have a son.

Foreign liquor worth over Rs 20 lakh seized

Foreign liquor worth over Rs 20 lakh, which was being smuggled from Haryana, was seized from a truck in Farah area near here on Sunday, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths of the Excise Department intercepted the truck near Mahuvan toll barrier and recovered the liquor stored in 775 boxes, they said.

Further probes are on, police added.

The department had also recovered imported liquor worth Rs 16 lakh from the same area yesterday.

Two women seriously injured in acid attack in UP

A nurse and a teacher were seriously injured when a youth threw acid on them at Aryapuri locality here, police said Monday.

Usha Sharma (35), a nurse, and Bobby (45), a teacher, were returning home in a rickshaw when the youth threw acid on Usha yesterday. They were rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

The accused Pawan Kumar has been arrested.

According to police, Usha, who is married, and Pawan were involved in a relationship. However, Pawan was planning to get married to another girl which had upset Usha.

Delhi Police chief meets CM Sheila Dikshit

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar Sunday met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Police sources said Dikshit was accompanied by Satyendra Garg, head of the Delhi traffic police.

The sources said that Neeraj Kumar later met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

What the police commissioner discussed with the chief minister and the home minister was not immediately known.

The meetings come in the wake of Dikshit’s public criticism of the way Delhi Police cracked down on the protests against the gang-rape of a young woman, who died Saturday in Singapore.

Against the backdrop of the death of the Delhi gang-rape victim, the Army has issued advisories to all its formations across the country against holding new year parties.

Advisory has been issued to all formations that they should not organise new year parties, Army officials said here.

Army Chief Gen Bikaram Singh and his wife Bubbles Singh will visit patients in Army Research and Referral Hospital here and Base Hospital on the first day of the new year and distribute sweets.

Delhi rape victim cremated, weeks before wedding

Delhi gangrape victim, who died Saturday after valiantly fighting her injuries for 13 days, was cremated away from the public glare within hours of a chartered Air India plane bringing the body back at 3.30 am on Sunday.

Her inconsolable father and two brothers lit the funeral pyre at around 8am in a Dwarka crematorium exactly a fortnight.

She was to marry the friend, a software engineer, in February. “They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi,” said a close friend.

Idol found during excavation

In Shivlal Nagar Mangalhat area during the digging for the establishment of an electrical sub-station, an idol is said to have been excavated Mr. Raja Singh, Municipal corporator, reached the spot on hearing this news. They claimed that there must have been a temple in the past.

On the arrival of Raja Singh, people were perturbed. On receiving information, the officials of the Revenue Department handed over the idol to the officials of the Department of Archaeology.

No hike in water tariff in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday announced that there will no hike in water tariff in the capital.

As per the decision of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the revision was due on Jaunary 1 but Dikshit said there would no hike this year.

“Dikshit further directed the DJB to make its Revenue Management System smooth and settle issues related to billing. Dikshit also stressed upon the need of immediate resolution of Consumer Grievances and other issues arisen in the early days of Revenue Management System,” an official release said.

Blast near Assam CM’s residence, boy injured

A teenager was injured when a detonator he was carrying home exploded near Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s official residence at Koinadhora here Saturday.

The teenager, identified as Sanjib Das, found the detonator attached to a wire at a stone quarry on the Assam-Meghalaya border and was carrying it home at Uday Nagar here when it exploded in the high security area, IGP (Central Western Range) L R Bishnoi said.

The IGP said the teenager suffered minor injuries in the explosion which was a small one and caused no damage.

Hillary Clinton in Hospital After Blood Clot Found

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been admitted to a hospital in New York after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Hillary was admitted after her doctors on Sunday discovered the clot while performing a follow-up exam, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said.

No more information was given about the location of the clot but Reines said Hillary is being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor the medication.

Gadkari attacks Centre over Hindu migrant issue

BJP president Nitin Gadkari today attacked the Centre over its “failure” to protect the interest of Hindus in Pakistan, and announced to form a five-member committee to raise it at international forums.

Gadkari met the migrants here at a camp on Jhanwar road, and spent about half-an-hour with them. The BJP leader also announced an ex-gratia financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to them.

He assured them of making a five-member team including two MPs, “which will study the nitty-gritty of the issue, so that it could be taken up on the international forums and organisations.”

US President Barack Obama Sunday reiterated his commitment to push new gun-control legislation in the first year of his second term.

“The question is: Are we going to be able to have a national conversation and move something through Congress,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying during NBC’s “Meet the Press” programme.

As many as 20 school kids and six adults were killed by a man in a shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Dec 14. The massacre has led to calls across the country for stricter gun control.
