US welcomes Pak decision to extend MFN status to India

The US has welcomed Pakistan’s decision to extend the most-favored nation status to India and commended its recent moves to expand its economic co-operation with neighbours.

“The United States welcomed the Government of Pakistan’s plans to extend most-favored-nation status to India by the end of the year,” the US State Department said in a statement at the conclusion of the US-Pakistan Economic and Finance Working Group meeting, which was Co-Chaired by the Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides and the Pak Finance Minister, Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pays homage to I K Gujral

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today paid homage to former Prime Minister I K Gujral, remembering him as a “great patriot” and a “great scholar statesman”.

Gujral’s body has been kept at his 5 Janpath residence here for the public to pay respects. Leaders cutting across party lines also visited his residence to pay their homage.

92-year-old Gujral died at a private hospital in nearby Gurgaon after a brief illness yesterday.

The Prime Minister and his wife arrived at his residence this morning and paid floral tributes.

India hopes UN vote will help resume Palestine, Israel talks

India has expressed hope that Palestine’s enhanced status at the UN will pave the way for resumption of “serious and direct” talks with Israel as it voiced concern that the continued impasse between the two parties over settlement activities threaten the two-state solution.

India was among the 138 nations that voted in favour of Palestine at a historic UN General Assembly vote that upgraded the status of the Palestinian Authority to non-member observer state from an entity.

Gunmen kidnap 20 would-be Iraqi soldiers

Gunmen kidnapped 20 men today who were travelling from northern Iraq to Baghdad for medical tests needed to join the army, but the hostages were later freed in an army operation, officers said.

They were seized at Al-Amin restaurant near Baiji, a police lieutenant colonel said, adding that the kidnappers
took them in eight vehicles toward Anbar province, which is home home to various former insurgent strongholds.

‘Dabangg 2’ isn’t same as ‘Dabangg’, says Salman

Superstar Salman Khan asserts that “Dabangg 2” is not a copy of the first film and the audience should consider it as a movie after interval.

“It’s not the same. We are not copying and giving you the same picture. It’s a different film,” the 47-year-old said here Friday.

“‘Dabangg’ was of a particular genre and now a similar genre film is coming out ‘Dabangg 2’,” he said on the sets of “Bigg Boss 6” where he launched the item song “Fevicol se” from his new film “Dabangg 2”.

Manisha to go to US for treatment

Ailing actress Manisha Koirala will leave for the US shortly for further tests and treatment, a medical source said Saturday.

The 42-year-old, who was discharged from Jaslok Hospital where she was admitted for three days, will go with her family to the US. No further details are known.

“Given her condition, she is fine and we are hopeful she will come out of it,” the source said, while refusing to give details citing patient-privacy privileges.

Manisha was taken to the hospital Nov 28 after she reportedly fell unconscious.

Two accused in SI murder case shot dead

Two of the main accused in the murder of a Sub-Inspector, who escaped from custody today, were shot dead when they tried to attack police personnel who were searching for them, police said.

A police team intercepted Prabhu and Bharathi at Kaalpirivu village near Manamadurai, 15-km from where they escaped earlier while being taken to a court in Sivaganga district from the Central prison here.

The duo attempted to attack the police personnel and police opened fire in self-defence, killing them on the
spot, they said.

Man commits after row with wife
(Siasat News): After having a row with his wife on a petty issue, a man committed suicide. This incident occurred in Saroor Nagar police station limits.

As per the details, Nagiah, 52, resident of Karmanghat, had a scuffle with his wife on November 29 on a petty matter.

Last night he reached in an inebriated state and again had heated argument with his wife. After that he committed suicide by hanging.

Police has registered a case and further investigations are on.

Curfew lifted in Srinagar

With the situation returning to normal, authorities on Saturday lifted the three-day-old curfew imposed in nine police station areas of the city following sectarian clashes.

“Curfew has been lifted from all nine police station areas of Srinagar city as the situation remained peaceful following imposition of restrictions on Wednesday,” a police spokesman said.

Curfew was imposed in Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora police station areas on Wednesday after sectarian clashes broke out in Hawal area of the city.

JD (U) denounces orders to display shop’s name in Telugu

Pakistani foreign minister to meet Clinton

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar will meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she leads an official delegation to Brussels Dec 3-4, the foreign ministry said Saturday.

Khar and Clinton will hold discussions on bilateral relations, and exchange views on the “way forward to achieve common objectives of peace and stability in the region”, a foreign ministry statement said.

The foreign minister will be accompanied by army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, reported Xinhua.

UN predicts huge surge in Syrian refugee numbers

UN leader Ban Ki-moon predicted today that Syrian refugee numbers will surge to more than 700,000 by January as the country’s conflict reaches “appalling heights of brutality.”

UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi warned alongside Ban that Syria is now in danger of becoming a “failed state” as he appealed for new international efforts to reach a political settlement.

ATS begins probe into Maharashtra blast

The Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) is probing into a radio explosion in Koregaon village of Kaij tehsil of Beed district on Friday afternoon.

Four members of a family, including a minor boy, were seriously injured when the radio set exploded at their residence in Koregaon village.

Bus conductor AR Nimbalkar (35), his wife Usha (30), mother Kusum (53) and two-year-son old Kunal were seriously injured in the incident, police said.

UP shivers as icy winds blow across state

Many parts of Uttar Pradesh woke up to a chilly weekend Saturday as icy winds swept across the state.

According to the Met office, the recent rainfall and snowfall in the Kashmir Valley and showers in parts of western Uttar Pradesh have triggered the onset of winters.

The mercury is set to plummet further in the coming week.

“November was unusually cold in Lucknow and neighbouring areas and now that December has started, be prepared for a long spell of cold,” a Met official told a news agency.

Bus catches fire near Nagpur, five killed

Five persons, including two children, were charred to death when a private luxury bus caught fire in the wee hours Saturday at Hinganghat, about 100 kms from here, police said.

The bus, carrying a marriage party was on its way back to Hinganghat, when the blaze broke out in the vehicle near Jam village, killing five passengers on the spot, they said.

Six others were injured in the mishap. The cause of the fire is not yet known and further investigations are on.

The deceased are yet to be identified.
