BSF jawan injured in landmine blast in Poonch

A BSF jawan was injured in a landmine blast along Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Harminder Singh of 135 Battalion of BSF stepped on the landmine along LoC in Krishnagati belt of Poonch district resulting in blast last evening, officials said on Saturday.

The injured jawan has been admitted to hospital, they said.

Man gets death sentence for killing wife

A local court has awarded the death sentence to a man for murdering his wife in Allavaram mandal of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

Second Additional Sessions Judge of Amalapuram court B David Raju awarded the death sentence to 35-year-old K Veerabhadra Rao last evening for killing his wife Seethamahalakshmi in February of 2010.

According to police, the convict, who hails from Gopayalanka in Allavaram mandal, had beaten his wife severely before stabbing her to death.

He had surrendered before the police after committing the murder.

Bangladesh offers compensation to fire victims

Bangladesh’s government said Saturday it will give USD 2,500 to the families of those who died in a garment factory fire last week and USD 625 to those who were injured.

The government’s offer of compensation, announced to The Associated Press by Mahbubul Hoque Shakil, an aide to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was separate from the garment industry’s promise to pay the families of the victims a monthly salary for at least 10 years.

The fire a week ago killed 112 people and put renewed focus on the lack of proper safety precautions at some of the nation’s 4,000 garment factories.

24 children injured as bus falls into pond

Twenty-four children were injured on Saturday when a school bus fell into a pond near Champuru Bazar in Utraula area here.

The bus of a private school carrying 45 children fell into the pond injuring 24 of them this afternoon, police said.

The injured students were rushed to hospital from where they were discharged after first aid.

None of the children sustained serious injuries.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Saturday said that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is fit to become the Prime Minister of the country.

Narendra Modi is capable of becoming the prime minister of the country… Swaraj told reporters at the airport, responding to a query.

Swaraj arrived in Vadodara for campaigning and will be addressing two rallies of which one will be in the city while another at Dabhoi town.

“BJP will make a hat-trick by winning the Gujarat assembly elections for the third time in a row,” Swaraj said.

Ibrahim takes over as OSD in IB

Syed Asif Ibrahim on Saturday took over as Officer on Special Duty in the Intelligence Bureau in the run up to taking over as the Director of the agency by the end of this month.

59-year old Ibrahim, the first Muslim to lead the agency, will have a tenure of two-years, the order said.

An official order said Ibrahim, a 1977-batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as OSD in the Intelligence Bureau and will later take over as its Director after incumbent Nehchal Sandhu retires on December 31.

Crib deaths: union ministers visit hospital

Deepa Dasmunsi, the bete noire of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and another union minister from West Bengal visited Malda Medical College and Hospital where 37 infants died in six days since Saturday.

Dasmunsi, minister of state for urban development, and Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury, minister of state for health, said they visited the hospital to review the situation following the crib deaths.

“Several hundred children died at the hospital last year too. Still the situation has not been changed,” said the minister who also talked to the hospital authorities.

India writes to US seeking extradition of Headley

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has written to his US counterpart Hillary Clinton requesting for extradition of Pakistani-American LeT terrorist and Mumbai terror accused David Headley and his accomplice Tahawwur Hussain Rana.

Khurshid has written the letter to Hillary for extradition of the two before their sentencing there in January, official sources said on Saturday.

According to sources, India is hopeful that the US would take a favourable decision on its request which was sent in the first week of November. New Delhi is awaiting a response from Washington.

US judge denies bid to take down anti-Muslim film

An actress who appeared in the anti-Muslim film blamed for sparking violence in the Middle East has lost another legal bid to have the trailer taken down from YouTube.

A federal judge in Los Angeles denied a motion for injunction yesterday by Cindy Lee Garcia. It wasn’t immediately known whether Garcia’s attorneys would file an appeal.

Garcia lost a similar legal challenge in state court when a judge rejected her lawsuit in September.

The film enraged Muslims and ignited violence in the Middle East, killing dozens.

1/2 cup paneer (mashed)
1/4 cup mayonnaise
6-7 pieces dated (stone removed)
6 pieces canned peach (aadoo)
1/4 cup cashew nut (kaju) (roasted)
1/4 bunch lettuce (kasmisaag) (chopped)
1 Tomato (Tamatar) (sliced)
2 tsp green chutney
1 tsp Tomato (Tamatar) chutney

How to make fruit and nut salad:
Mix paneer, mayonnaise, lettuce and green chutney and make a layer of it in a flat bowl.
Mix dates, tomato chutney, peaches, cashew buts and place it over the 1st layer.

Infosys to shift from NASDAQ to NYSE

IT major Infosys is transferring its NASDAQ-listed American Depositary Shares (ADS) to the New York Stock Exchange and is also planning to list them on the Paris and London exchanges.

At the end of September quarter, Infosys had 6.67 crore ADS representing 11.62 percent of its total number of shares, according to BSE data.

An ADS is a US dollar-denominated equity share of a foreign-based company available for purchase on an American stock exchange.

Maruti’s November sales jump 12%

The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Saturday reported 12.45 percent increase in its total sales at 1,03,200 units in November.

The company had sold 91,772 units in the same month last year, the company said in a statement.

In November, MSI recorded domestic sales of 90,882 units compared to 82,870 units in the year-ago period, registering a rise of 9.67 percent, it added.

MSI’s exports went up by 38.37 percent to 12,318 units last month from 8,902 units in the year-ago period, it said.

Cancelling his engagements in the city in view of the death of former prime minister IK Gujral, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday left here for the national capital to attend the funeral.

The President arrived here on Friday night from Chennai to attend the 150th anniversary celebrations of Calcutta High Court and the centenary celebrations of National Test House.

Funeral of Gujral will take place in New Delhi during the day.

The Army has agreed in principle to accept domicile certificates as valid proof of residence for recruitment rallies to be held in Arunachal Pradesh in future.

This consideration is only for the non-Arunachal Pradesh scheduled tribes residents settled in the state for long periods and will not affect the reservation quota for the scheduled tribes of the state, a Raj Bhawan communiqu said here today.

Authorities have demolished a five-story home that stood incongruously in the middle of a new main road and had become the latest symbol of resistance by Chinese homeowners against officials accused of offering unfair compensation.

Xiayangzhang village chief Chen Xuecai told The Associated Press the house was bulldozed today after its owners, duck farmer Luo Baogen and his wife, agreed to accept compensation of 260,000 yuan (USD 41,000).

Chen says Luo voluntarily consented to the deal.

China launches first high speed train in extremely

The world’s first high-speed train in areas with extremely low temperature started operation in China on Saturday.

The railway, which runs through three provinces in northeastern China, started operation as part of the country’s efforts to revitalise the old industrial base, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Four trains with the initial of “G” left the stations in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang, Changchun, capital of Jilin, Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, and Dalian, port city in Liaoning, simultaneously today to mark the operation of the 921-km line.

Weeks after Pakistan freed 13 Afghan Taliban detainees to push peace process, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed Friday on the release of more Taliban prisoners, facilitating contacts and urging the Taliban to renounce ties to al Qaeda.

A joint statement issued at the conclusion of a day-long visit of Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul to Pakistan said the two sides emphasized the importance of an intra-Afghan inclusive dialogue and consequent political settlement for durable peace in Afghanistan, reported Xinhua citing local media.

Pakistan avalanche: 3 soldiers killed, many missing

At least three soldiers were killed Friday and many others, including both troops and civilians, went missing as an avalanche hit Pakistan-controlled Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC) with India, reported Xinhua.

A Xinhua source in northern Pakistan said the avalanche occurred at about 3 a.m. local time Friday near Tehjiann Sector along the LoC.

The bodies of the three soldiers killed in the avalanche have already been recovered and airlifted to their hometown, said the army source.

The missing people are still unaccounted for, it added.
