Body of gang-rape victim arrives in India

A special plane carrying the body of the 23-year-old gang-raped physiotherapist intern arrived in India from Singapore early Sunday.

The chartered Air India plane touched down at Delhi airport around 4 a.m. The parents of the woman were also accompanying the body.

Earlier in Singapore, the body was embalmed after a post-mortem and placed in a special casket for being flown to India.

Hyderabad mourns death of Delhi gang-rape victim

Scores of people, mostly students, held a candle light vigil at Tank Bund here this evening condoling death of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim.

Demanding justice, people from different walks of life participated in the march that started from Necklace Road
before it was culminated at Tank Bund.

The physiotherapy student was gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi on December 16. She succumbed to her injuries in
a Singapore hospital today after battling for life for past 13 days.

Makkah Masjid blast case: NIA gets custody of Tej Ram

A local court today granted 18-day police custody of Tej Ram, who was arrested in connection with the 2007 Makkah Masjid bomb blast case, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Tej Ram, believed to be a member of the right-wing group that is suspected to be behind the Samjhauta Express blast which claimed 68 lives on February 18, 2007, was arrested by NIA on December 25 from Delapur of Indore in Madhya Pradesh and produced before a court in Hyderabad on December 27.

India skipper Mahendra Singh rates the visiting Pakistani side, especially its bowling, quite high but feels the side which remains more consistent has better chances to do well in the One-day series, beginning here tomorrow.

2006 Malegaon blast case: NIA gets transit custody of Lodhi

A local court today granted three-day transit remand of Manohar Lodhi, who was arrested in connection with the 2006 Malegaon bomb blast case, to National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Lodhi (31) was arrested by the premier investigating agency from Gurdakheri village in Hatod tehsil of Indore
district yesterday.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyadarshan Sharma granted three-day transit remand to NIA which has to
produce Lodhi in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) court in Mumbai on Monday, said Lodhi’s counsel Ranjan Sharma.

Confusion over Congress stand on Telangana

Confusion prevailed over the stand taken by the ruling Congress party during Friday’s all-party meeting in New Delhi over the Telangana issue. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said clearly that it was not against a separate Telangana.

Senior leader Gade Venkat Reddy, one of the two Congress representatives who attended the meeting, told reporters that the party voiced two opinions. While he opposed any division of Andhra Pradesh, his party colleague Suresh Reddy favoured a separate Telangana state.

Three held in Britain after pig’s head kept near Mosque

Giving a new sign of the growing Islamophobia in the British community, a pig head was dumped at a mosque in Leicester, creates shockwaves among the Muslim community over the growing effect of far-right parties in the European country.
Two men and a woman have been arrested in Britain after a pig’s severed head was left at the doors of a Muslim place of worship, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

Police were called after the head was found at the entrance to the community centre in Thurnby Lodge area of Leicester. The centre is used by a local Muslim group.

Naidu’s padayatra enters Warangal

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu’s Vasthunna Mee kosam padayatra arrived in Warangal district on Saturday.

Naidu was received by women with the traditional bonalu as he began his padayatra at Vellaampalli. He crossed over from Karimnagar district yesterday and the padayatra will go on for 12 days in the district. He will trek along six assembly constituencies covering 150 km addressing wayside meetings and interacting with farmers, workers, women and other sections of people.

Delhi gang rape case: CM Sheila Dikshit condoles death of victim

Terming the gang-rape of the 23-year-old girl as a “shameful incident” for her as an administrator, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today condoled the death of the victim and said one must ensure that such “ghastly” acts do not happen again.

She also appealed to people to maintain peace and calm against the backdrop of violent demonstrations last weekend over the gang-rape incident.

“Our heart goes to the family. My heart is burning over the incident. The passing away of the girl is a truly and terribly tragic incident. It shook our conscience,” Dikshit told PTI.

Arun Jaitley condoles Delhi gang-rape victim’s death

Observing that the 23-year-old gang-rape victim has been sacrificed to an environment in which women are not safe, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley today sought better laws and an environment where women are safe.

Condoling the girl’s death, Jaitley said, “All our heads must hang in shame today that a young girl has fallen a victim to brutal and beastly behaviour. She has been sacrificed to an environment in which women are not safe”.

He said the victim’s death has shaken the conscience of the whole society and urged it to introspect on the issue.

Ratan Tata, an iconic corporate leader, retired as Chairman of Tata Group after a 50-year run today but kept away from office on his last day at the helm of one of country’s oldest business empires.

Tata, who turned 75 today, is in Pune for his birthday, sources at Bombay House, headquarters of the salt-to-software conglomerate, told PTI, adding there was no clarity on whether he would visit his office later in the day.

Chairman-designate Cyrus Mistry, who made a visit to Bombay House today, will tomorrow take charge of the new assignment, sources in Tata Sons said.

IAF developing parameters for India’s manned space mission

Tests for sending India’s first manned mission into space are in “advanced” stages with the Indian Air Force (IAF) developing necessary parameters for selection of suitable candidates.

The tests will need another year to get fully validated and the selection process of the people for the manned mission will begin after that, Director General Medical Services (Air), Air Marshal Anil Behl told PTI here today.

Indian shoved under New York subway train

Police in New York are searching for a woman who allegedly shoved an Indian immigrant man to his death in front of a train on a New York City subway platform.

The victim was identified as Sunando Sen, 46, of Queens, who had been raised in India and who, after years of toil, had finally saved enough money to open a small copying business this year on the Upper West Side, media reports said.

It was the second time in a month that a man had been pushed under a train in New York.

Willfulness of ration shops owners

If we take stock of the situation at ration shops of old city we will find that obtaining essential basic items is like a Herculean task for the poor, as most of the ration shops remain closed and those which are open have no stock. Women, elders and small children have to wait for hours in queue.

A widow woman told that she can’t afford to buy rice from retail market so she has to totally depend upon 15 kg rice obtained from ration shop. If we don’t get rice we would starve.
