Decision to computerize wakf properties applauded

Various Muslim associations applauded the steps taken by Central Ministry of Minorities Affairs to computerize Wakf properties in the entire country.

In this connection, the efforts made by Mr. K.Rahman Khan, Union Minster of Minorities Affairs were appreciated.

Mr. Rahman Khan had made a statement that for the protection of wakf properties a centralized mechanism is necessary.

Money lender arrested

Habeebnagar police arrested moneylenders who had imprisoned a family. Three of these moneylenders are said to belong to a local political party. Two of them are the active workers of Majlis. Inspector of Habeebnagar police station confirmed that four persons have been arrested who had imprisoned a family by locking their house. India Gate, nearby areas sealed off in Delhi

India Gate and its adjacent areas in the national capital will remain out of bounds for public Sunday to prevent mass protests following the Dec 16 gang-rape victim’s death, police said.

The 23-year-old woman’s body was flown into the city from Singapore early Sunday and cremated here.

Like Saturday, after news of the woman’s death came, Delhi Police have closed all roads leading to India Gate.

17 Pakistanis die after drinking cough syrup

At least 17 people have died in Pakistan after consuming toxic cough syrup, with two deaths reported from Punjab province’s Gujranwala district Saturday, Geo News reported.

As many as 21 people who had excessively consumed the alleged toxic cough syrup and drugs were brought to hospital from different areas. At least 17 of these people died, said a senior official at the Gujranwala district headquarter hospital.

Woman strangulated after rape attempt

A man was Sunday arrested in Rajasthan for strangulating his 23-year-old sister-in-law after a failed rape bid Dec 25, police said. The victim died in a hospital Saturday.

Police said the accused escaped thinking the woman had died. However, she was rushed to SMS hospital in Jaipur in an unconscious state where she passed away Saturday night four days after the rape attempt.

The incident took place at Govindpura village near Neem Ka Thana in Sikar district, around 150 km from Jaipur.

IGNOU announces last date for admission

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Sunday announced Jan 8, 2013 as the last date to apply for late admissions to its various academic programmes.

University officials said the students would have to pay a late fee of Rs.200 along with the application form.

The IGNOU programmes offered only in the January session include Master of Science in Mathematics with Applications in Computer Science (MSCMACS), Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital and Health Management (PGDHHM) and PG Diploma in HIV Medicine (PGDHIVM), among others.

No bifurcation of state, package likely: G Venkat Reddy

BJP demands special Parliament session on Telangana

In the backdrop of all party meeting held on Telangana issue in New Delhi on December 28, state unit President BJP, G Kishan Reddy sent a letter to union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde stating that BJP demands that the central government convene a special session of Parliament and pass bill for separate Telangana state as promised to the people on 9th December 2009.

Salwar suits reduce chances of sexual harassment: BJP legislature

BJP MLA from Alwar city constituency has asked the government to put a ban on skirts as uniform. He believes that this is also a reason behind increased cases of sexual harassment.

In his letter to the chief secretary, Banwari Lal Singhal, demanded that girl students be made to wear salwar suits or shirts and trousers as uniform to reduce chances of their being subjected to lewd comments or harassment.

Police pushed for early cremation of gang-rape victim: BJP leader

Delhi Police “forced” the family of the 23-year-old gang-rape victim to cremate her body before sunrise after she was flown here from Singapore early Sunday, a local BJP leader alleged.

“The family members refused to cremate the body before sunrise. But they where forced by the police to do the cremation. The family where forced to do the last rites before sunrise,” Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party chief Vijender Gupta, who participated in the last rites, told IANS.

Bomb blast targets cinema in Peshawar

A bomb blast took place outside a cinema in Pakistan’s Peshawar city Sunday morning, leaving one person as injured, Geo News reported.

According to the police, the blast took place near the cinema’s gate which was partially damaged. It, however, caused no loss of life. Nature of the blast was yet to be ascertained till last report.

Gang-rape victim cremated in Delhi

Body of the 23-year-old gang-rape victim was cremated here early Sunday morning soon after it was flown in from Singapore, officials said.

“The body arrived this morning and the cremation has been done,” a home ministry spokesperson said but refused to divulge more details.

Officials in the ministry said the body arrived here at 3.30 a.m.

The woman’s body was embalmed after a post-mortem and placed in a special casket before being flown to India in a chartered Air India aircraft. Parents of the woman were accompanying the body.

Punjab rape: Dismissed police officer arrested

The Punjab Police Saturday arrested its dismissed police officer for his role in the abetment to suicide of a teenaged rape victim of Patiala district.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Nasib Singh, who was in-charge of the police station of Badshahpur village, where the victim committed suicide Wednesday evening, was arrested during special checking by the police.

The ASI was dismissed from service Thursday and later booked for abetment to suicide of the victim.

Hundreds continue protest at Jantar Mantar, braving winter cold

Braving the bitter cold, a few hundred people continued their protest Saturday night at Jantar Mantar over the death of a 23-year-old gang-rape victim.

Holding candles, the protesters continued their vigil near the Mughal-era observatory in the heart of the Indian capital.

Comprising mostly students, the protesters said they were planning for a bigger protest gathering on Sunday, when the body is expected to be brought back from Singapore.

5.8-quake hits Pakistan

A 5.8-magnitude quake struck Pakistan Saturday night but there was no immediate report of damage or casualty, the Met officials said.

The quake occurred around 11 p.m. The tremor was felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore and other cities, Xinhua reported. The epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region.

Taliban kill 21 security men in Pakistan

The Taliban have killed 21 Pakistani security personnel whom they abducted a few days ago from a check post, a media report said Sunday.

Their bodies, riddled with gun shot wounds, were found in Hassan Khel area near Peshawar.

The militant group claimed responsibility for the killing, Xinhua quoted the Geo TV as saying.

On Wednesday night, the Taliban attacked two check posts near Peshawar, killing two security personnel and kidnapping 23 others. Two of them had escaped from their custody.

‘Iran uranium enrichment to continue’

Iran is determined to continue enriching uranium to the purity level of 20 percent, an Iranian lawmaker has said.

Mansour Haqiqatpour, a member of Majlis (parliament), said “Iran will never exchange this right”.

Irrespective of agreement or disagreement of the P5+1 (US, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany), Iran will not give up its right to nuclear technology, Xinhua quoted the parliamentarian as saying.
