Entrance test for admission into Urdu Academy Computer Centres

Urdu Academy is organising an entrance test for admission into the diploma in Advance Computer Application and Multilingual DTP Course available at computer training centres set up in the city and district, on Sunday, December 9 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

Prof S A Shukoor Director/Secretary told that entrance test of district centres will be held at their respective places while entrance test for 15 centres in the city will be held at Anwar-ul-Uloom Degree College, New Mallepally.

Srinagar reels under curfew for third day

Curfew continued for the third day in most parts of summer capital Srinagar, as authorities feared sectarian violence after Friday prayers.

Srinagar District Magistrate Basheer Ahmad Khan told reporters that curfew would continue in nine police station areas on Friday. The curfew was imposed on Wednesday.

The district magistrate said authorities would review the situation in the evening to make a decision on the future course of action.

Maoists torch eight vehicles in Jharkhand

Suspected Maoist guerrillas torched eight vehicles of a private company involved in road construction work in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, police said on Friday.

According to police, 30 to 35 suspected Maoist guerrillas attacked the office of the private company on Thursday night and torched eight vehicles including dumpers and tractors.

The guerrillas escaped after torching the vehicles.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place near Jamni village of Dumka district, around 350 km from Ranchi.

Maoist guerrillas are active in 18 of state’s 24 districts.

ID proof must for sleeper-class passengers from Dec 1

It will be mandatory for sleeper- class train passengers to carry identity proof from December 1, this year as Railways firmed up steps to prevent misuse of tickets by touts and facilitate hassle-free travel by bonafide people.

From Saturday (December 1), passengers failing to produce original identity proof in sleeper class, as and when asked for, will be treated as “without ticket” and charged accordingly, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

Assange ‘suffering from chronic lung ailment’

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is suffering from a chronic lung ailment that could worsen at any time and is being checked regularly by doctors.

“He has a chronic lung condition that could worsen at any time,” Ambassador Ana Alban said.

Assange, 41, whose website angered the United States by releasing thousands of secret diplomatic cables, has been holed up inside Ecuador’s embassy in London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations. Assange has denied any wrongdoing.

In a surprise move, suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife Shweta has been given the Congress ticket from Maninagar to take on Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

According to reports, Shweta Bhatt will contest from Maninagar constituency. Sanjiv Bhatt is currently under suspension. He was suspended after he took on Modi, accusing him of asking the police to go slow on Hindus during the 2002 riots in which 1,200 people were killed.

GT Express: 2 AC coaches catch fire, 1 dead

Two AC coaches of GT Express caught fire near Gwalior on Friday, leaving one person dead.

According to reports, the person died due to heart attack during the commotion. The train caught fire at Sidholi station near Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. The cause of the fire has not been revealed yet.

Other trains on the route have been affected due to the fire.

UPA an “indecisive” government: Advani

Veteran BJP leader L K Advani today lashed out at the UPA government describing it as “indecisive and incompetent.” Addressing a public meeting at the Ujjain Development Authority stadium here after taking part in a function to mark the linking of the river Narmada with Kshipra, Advani said earlier governments used to take some decisions and do work. “The present UPA government’s functioning is marked by indecision as it is unable to do anything,” he said. Advani said he had no hesitation in saying that this was the “worst government” he had seen in his political career spanning six decades.

Land allotted to Ponty Chadha’s company in Noida’s sector 25 and Sector 32 A during the previous government had been according to the rules, the state government informed the Assembly today. A total of 6,14,000 square metre were allotted to M/s Wave Infrastructure Private Limited (consortium) as per the rules, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said in a written reply to the Legislative Assembly. The said plots were allotted by the authority as per the prescribed procedure at the rate of Rs 1,07,003 per square metre, Yadav said.

Woman in search of parents after 27 years

A woman, who was kidnapped at the age of three some 27 years ago at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, has returned here in search of her parents. According to Beena, then Bindu, she along with her parents had gone to Thiruvananthapuram in 1985, and while returning a stranger kidnapped her from near a bus stand for ornaments. The man held her captive in a house for nearly six months and left her alone wandering, in a village near the Kerala capital, she said.

Hyderabad fire: Owner of godown arrested

Police today arrested the owner of a godown shed in connection with Sunday’s fire at a residential apartment near Manikonda on city outskirts. The fire, which broke out at the shed and spread to the building, had claimed eight lives, including that of a 10-day-old boy. Vijay Kumar, the shed owner against whom Narsingi police had registered a case, was arrested here and remanded in judicial custody, a senior police officer said. The shed, erected for a TV serial shoot, was adjacent to an apartment complex at Puppalguda.

Make more movies in London, Johnson tells Indian filmmakers

Mayor of London Boris Johnson today met top film and TV producers here and announced that two new Indian films are to be shot in the UK capital next year.

The third film in India’s hugely successful ‘Housefull’ franchise, starring Akshay Kumar – will be entirely filmed in London, a release said.

The Mayor has also invited the film’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala to shoot his directorial debut ‘Kick’, starring Salman Khan, in the UK capital. Post-production on both films, which have a combined budget of 35million pounds, will be in London’s Soho.

HC reserves order on maintainability against Vadra

The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Thursday reserved its order on the maintainability of a writ petition filed by a local activist seeking a probe into allegations of irregularities against Robert Vadra relating to his land transactions with real estate major DLF in Haryana.

The order was reserved by a division bench comprising Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice Virendra Kumar Dixit after hearing the submissions of the Centre’s counsel and the petitioner’s lawyer.

Menon to visit China to start formal contact with new leaders

India’s formal contacts with China’s new leadership would begin when national security adviser Shivshankar Menon arrives here to hold wide ranging talks with Chinese officials over two days from December 3.

Menon’s visit mainly focuses on bilateral issues during which he will also meet his Chinese counterpart on border talks, Dai Bingguo, who is set to retire next March.

More importantly, the top Indian official would also be meeting Vice Premier, Li Keqiang, the new number two leader who is set to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao.

US drone aircraft kills 3 in Pakistan

A US drone aircraft fired missiles into Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal region today, killing at least three people suspected to be militants.

Tribesmen said the two missiles were fired on a vehicle in Shinwarsak area near Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan.

There were conflicting reports about the identity of the slain men.

While some sources said that all victims were local militants, a section of the media reported that all those killed were foreign militants.

British national robbed in Goa

A British national was Thursday robbed of Rs.one lakh at knife-point outside a foreign exchange outlet near here, police said.

Police inspector Tushar Vernekar told IANS that the British citizen had just exchanged euros to rupees and was exiting the store in Mapusa, 10 km from here, when an unidentified person armed with a knife accosted him and snatched the bag containing the money from his hand.

Earlier this month, a Russian and a British tourist were robbed in two separate incidents in the north Goa beach belt.

Goa attracts over 2.6 million tourists annually.

2.5% of HIV positive Children in Jharkand

Out of the 23,600 HIV positive people in Jharkhand, 2.5 per cent are children, a UNICEF release said here today. Quoting a report by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the UNICEF said 91% of the HIV positive people are aged between 15-49 years, 2.5% are children and 6.5% are over 50 years. It said transmission of the HIV virus from mother to child could be entirely prevented, but this would be possible only if all pregnant women are tested for HIV every year. “At present only 8% of the pregnant women are tested for HIV.
