IGNOU extends admission date for January session

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended to Dec 14 the last date for admission to its various programmes for the session beginning January 2013, a varsity statement said Sunday.

Earlier, the last date to submit applications at the varsity’s regional centres was Nov 30. However, students could apply for courses till Dec 20 by submitting a late fee of Rs.200 at the centres. The revised dates are Dec 14 without the late fee and Jan 8 with the late fee.

Man sets himself afire after girl rejects proposal

A 38-year-old Chinese man was seriously injured after he set himself on fire following the rejection of his marriage proposal by his girlfriend.

The incident took place Saturday in Qingdao in Shandong province, China Daily reported Sunday.

In order to propose to the woman, the man surnamed Wu, a resident of Nanchang in Jiangxi province, drove a BMW car for over 1,100 km to Qingdao, where his girlfriend lived.

The two came close in 2011 but the relationship eventually ran into problems. The girl broke up and returned to her hometown.

10 Pakistanis die after drinking cough syrup

At least 10 people have died in Pakistan’s Lahore metropolis after they drank a toxic cough syrup bought from two local medical stores.

The deaths occurred in Shahdara Town area, Geo News reported Sunday.

Police said at least 16 people bought the medicine from the two shops. Their condition deteriorated after they drank the medicine, and they had to be rushed to hospital.

Ten people died and the remaining six are under treatment.

Police said the victims used to take cough syrup for intoxication.

England bowled out at tea, lead by 86

A late burst by Harbhajan Singh helped India bowl out England for 413 but the visitors still managed to take an 86-run lead at tea on the third day of the second cricket Test at the Wankhede Stadium here Sunday.

England looked headed for a huge total but after Kevin Pietersen’s downfall, the tailenders crumbled under constant pressure of the Indian spinners.

Pietersen smashed 20 fours and four sixes on his way to 186 off 233 balls. Ojha continued his dream run in the series removing the dangerous Pietersen to open the floodgates for India.

124 dead in Bangladesh factory fire

At least 124 people were killed when a fire raged through a garment factory in the outskirts of the Bangladesh capital, officials said Sunday.

The fire that started Saturday evening at Tazreen Fashion near the Dhaka Export Processing Zone in Ashulia was brought under control around 6 a.m. Sunday, the Daily Star quoted fire service officials as saying.

Sources said the toll may rise as a search operation was still going on.

Nine bodies were found Saturday night, and 115 more were recovered from the factory Sunday morning.

Drainage and nalas continue to blight the city

Over flowing manholes and nalas here and there have become a constant headache for the residents of old city. The worst part of it is that the dirty water get mixed with the water leaked from water pipeline and makes the whole street stinky. As a result women, elders, children and Namazis have tough time to go through the area.

AC double decker train on Delhi-Chandigarh route soon

To cater to the growing number of passengers between Delhi and Chandigarh, Railways has decided to start an AC double decker train between the two cities.

The 12-coach AC double decker train with fire alarm system is expected to be pressed into service by February next year, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

Besides, Railways is mulling to introduce electrical multiple units (EMU) train sets on Delhi-Chandigarh and Delhi-Amritsar routes to reduce the travel time between these cities, the official said.

IK Gujral stable but critical

The condition of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, who is admitted to the Medicity Medanta Hospital here with a lung infection, is “stable but critical”.

Gujral, 92, who was admitted to the hospital on November 19, is still on the ventilator. He was on dialysis for over a year now and had suffered a serious chest infection some days ago.

“His condition is stable but critical,” Narender Mehta Media Advisor to IK Gujral said outside the hospital today.

Reports of some tests would come out tomorrow and only after observing the results, the doctors would comment, he said.

Coal blocks allocation: 4 accused to be on trial

Two officials of a panel of the Union Ministry of Steel, along with a private firm and its director have been ordered by a Delhi court to be put on trial on cheating, forgery and corruption charges in a coal block allocation case.

Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Jain ordered framing of charges against Executive Secretary Goutam Kumar Basak and Manager Soumen Chatterjee of the ministry’s Joint Plant Committee for allegedly giving misleading report on production capacity of Chhattisgarh-based firm Prakash Industries Ltd.

Seven suicides reported in Bhopal over last 2 days

Seven persons including an engineering student committed suicide in separate incidents in the last 48 hours here, police said on Sunday.

A businessman, Ashok Bhadoria from Indore, ended his life by consuming poisonous pills at his brother-in-law’s house at Sanchi Complex in the city on Friday.

Bhadoria had reportedly suffered losses in his borewell business, police said.

An engineering student, Kamlesh Kumar, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a hotel room here on November 23.

HC declares Majlis corporator disqualified for the post

A division bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising of Justice Ashutosh Mohanta and justice G Krishna Mohan Reddy has upheld order of the chief judge and election tribunal city civil court, in which they had declared the election of Langar Houz division corporator as void.

The tribunal in its orders in 2011, had cancelled the election of Ravi Yadav and declared Uday Kumar of the BJP as elected in his place. Uday Kumar had challenged Ravi Yadav’s election saying that the later had three children at the time of elections.

Conspiracy to abandon Urdu as first language in English medium residential schools in Nizamabad

Govt. of A.P. established 12 Urdu medium residential schools in the state to eradicate educational backwardness of Minorities. Urdu was prescribed as the first language in these English medium residential schools.

With an intention to abandon the teaching of Urdu as the first language in these schools, Govt. issued orders to choose any of the three languages, namely Urdu, Hindi or Telugu as the first language.

Need to form committees for Urdu medium education-TRS leader Tariq Ansari’s representation to Collector, Nizamabad

President of Minority Cell of TRS of Nizamabad District, Mr. Tariq Ansari met the Collector of Nizamabad and made a representation to constitute education committee to oversee Urdu Medium education in Govt. schools of the district. He also demanded to appoint District Minority Welfare Officer. He told that in order to improve Urdu medium education in the district, it is necessary to constitute Urdu medium education committees. He suggested to the Collector to nominate educational experts for these committees. They would review the functioning of Urdu medium schools from time to time.

Construction of compound wall at Muslim graveyard in Warangal

Before the entrance of Warangal Fort, there is a Muslim graveyard and adjacent to it is an open land of the Govt. on which the Hindus play ‘Bathakamma’ every year on the occasion of Dassehra festival. On this open land, water stagnates in rainy season. There is no compound wall to the graveyard. When the construction work of compound wall started, some people belonging to Hindu religion tried to create an issue and made an attempt to stop the construction work.

19 dead in China coal mine accident

Nineteen miners were killed and four remained trapped after a gas outburst hit a coal mine in southwest China, rescuers said Sunday.

A total of 28 miners were working underground when the accident occurred Saturday at the mine in coal-rich Liupanshui city in southwest Guizhou province, Xinhua quoted provincial authorities as saying.

Rescuers were still searching Sunday, and the gas density in the pit has declined, an official said.

The coal mine went into operation in 2006 with a designed annual output of four million tonnes. The mine sits on a coal deposit of 1.3 billion tonnes.

Poor should approach Lok Adalat-Chief Justice

Chief Justice of A.P High Court advised the poor to approach Lok Adalat for seeking justice. He was addressing a gathering at Godavari Khani Guest House in Karimnagar District on the occasion of the inauguration of Mega Lok Adalat. He told that due to pressure of work in courts, Lok Adalats have been started since 1995 for imparting justice to the poor.
