Digvijaya slams Kejriwal for using Congress theme

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh Sunday accused Arvind Kejriwal of naming his party after the Congress’ slogan of “aam aadmi” (common man).

By naming his party as Aam Admi, Kejriwal has reflected his intellectual bankruptcy, the Congress leader said.

“It reflects the intellectual bankruptcy of Mr. Kejriwal that he adopted the theme of the Congress party,” he told reporters here.

Jethmalani was given long rope by BJP and RSS people for the last 3 years as he was seen openly going against the party line on each and every issue.The BJP on Sunday cracked the whip against eminent criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani for anti-party activities. Jethmalani was suspended from the party with immediate effect.

“Jethmalani’s remarks amount to indiscipline and will only help Congress,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said adding that BJP Parliamentary Board will meet on Monday at 4.30 pm.

‘Yaum-e-Ashoora’ observed in Hyderabad

Shia Muslims observed “Yaum-e-Ashoora” with the traditional ‘Bibi Ka Alam’ procession and mourning in this historic city Sunday.

Cries of “Ya Hussain” rent the air as blood oozed out from the heads and chests of the bare-chested Shia mourners in the mammoth procession.

It was all black and blood as a mood of mourning pervaded through the old city of Hyderabad, which has about 200,000 Shias, the second largest population of the community in India after Lucknow.

No shark fin soup please, Singapore’s going green

Shark fin soup, that exotic but pricey delicacy said to boost sexual potency and prevent heart disease, is going off menus in some Singapore hotels and restaurants in an effort to save sharks which face extinction from overfishing.

The fins of an adult shark can only feed five people and many small sharks are killed every day to meet the growing demand.

This is not restricted to just shark fins. Many hotels and restaurants have also taken off their menus other such endangered species like Chilean sea bass and blue/yellow fin tuna.

The differences between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and union Minister for Science and Technology S. Jaipal Reddy came to the fore once again with the latter staying away from the launch ceremony of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project Sunday.

Unhappy over being ignored, Jaipal Reddy did not attend the ceremony despite his presence in Hyderabad.

Officials close to Jaipal Reddy said he was not formally invited to the programme by the chief minister. According to them, only his name was printed on the invitation card and an invitation was sent through a person.

Ethiopians make clean sweep of Hyderabad 10-km Run

Ethiopian athletes made a clean sweep of Jamba Cloud Hyderabad 10-km Run Sunday, winning men’s and women’s overall titles. Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew clocked his personal best time of 27.36 minutes to win the race at the People’s Plaza on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake.

The 20-year-old, the fastest male athlete in the elite field, pushed to the second place the fancied Kenyan Nicholas Kipkemboi, who came here on the back of winning the Seven Hills Race in Netherlands.

Kipkemboi finished second with 27.37 while the third place went to Ugandan Jackson Kiprop (28.16)

Blast destroys Egypt intelligence building

A powerful explosion on the Egyptian side of the town of Rafah divided between Egypt and the Gaza Strip destroyed a part of a building used by Egyptian intelligence, Al Arabiya reported Sunday.

There have been no immediate reports on any casualties caused by the blast.

A large number of security personnel were deployed at the scene of the explosion, cordoning off the area and searching for possible explosives that had not been detonated.

India 117/7 after bowling out England for 413

India finished the third day of play at 117/7 against England, taking a lead of 31 runs in the second cricket Test match here at the Wankhede Stadium Sunday.

Earlier, India bowled out the visitors for 413, after they resumed the day at 178/2. Skipper Alistair Cook (122) and Kevin Pietersen (186) scored centuries for England.

At stumps, Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh were batting on 53 and 1, respectively. Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar clinched 5/61.

Should it be no work, no pay for MPs?

Yet one more parliament session is set to go the way of the previous ones – more noise and fury, less work and legislation, its primary business.

The first two days of the winter session last week have seen parties forcing adjournments on various issues. Will there be early normalcy and better use of taxpayers’ money, people ask.

Voices are growing for greater accountability of elected representatives, including suggestions of “no work, no pay”. But it naturally does not appear to have many takers among MPs.

India may be a market for heat-resistant chocolate

Chocolate giant Cadbury has filed a patent for a treat that will not melt, even at 40 degrees Celsius, and hopes to sell it in hot countries like Brazil and India.

The company said the secret to the non-melting chocolate is to reduce the fat content, the Daily Express reported.

Traditionally, chocolates have sugar particles that are coated in fat which makes them less heat resistant.

The daily said Cadbury has found a way to cut fat without losing texture or taste.

Family, marriage breakdowns causing Britain’s problems

A majority of Britons believe that their country’s social problems are being caused due to a breakdown in family values and the decline in marriage.

Around 55 percent of those questioned said their local community was plagued by broken families and crime, the Daily Express reported.

Sixty percent said that over the past few decades, marriage has become less important and that is a cause of the problems.

A whopping majority — 89 percent — said better parenting and stronger families were the keys to mending the broken society.

Where Hindus join Shias to mourn Imam Hussain

A group of upper caste Hindus joined Shia Muslims here Sunday to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, saying it was part of their tradition.

The martyrdom of the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, his family and followers marks the 10th day of the month of Moharram.

These Hindus in Muzaffarpur, about 70 km from Patna, belong to the Bhumihar Brahmin Mahasabha and claim their lineage as the Hussaini Brahmin sect.

TDP activists held for holding protest against TRS

Several TDP leaders and activists including senior leader Motkupalli Narasimhulu were arrested by the police when they staged a protest at Gun Park opposite Legislative Assembly here on Sunday.

After paying tributes to the martyrs of Telangana at Martyrs Memorial, Narsimhulu launched his hunger strike in protest against the “Suryapet Samarabheri” being held by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. However, minutes after he began his hunger strike, Narasimhulu and other TDP activists were arrested by the police. Later, they were shifted to the Nampally police station.

Study finds use of probiotic bacteria helpful to burn belly fat

The findings of a study reveal that supplements containing probiotics, may burn abdominal fat. Probiotics are the live bacteria that prevent intestinal fat absorption. Micropharma, the company that makes the probiotic supplements had sponsored the study.

Initially the study was done at a small number of people who were only slightly overweight. Through the study it was found that those who ate probiotic supplement over a month and a half had lost 3 to 4 percent of their body fat. Most of that fat loss was associated to belly fat.

Senior IPS officer Alok Joshi will be the new chief of RAW and Syed Asif Ibrahim will be the next Director of Intelligence Bureau, the first Muslim to head it with four officers senior to him having been shifted out.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared the name of Joshi, a 1976 batch officer from Haryana cadre, to succeed Sajeev Tripathi as chief of Research and Analysis Wing, an organisation entrusted with the task of gathering external intelligence.

Woman dies after reaction to hair dye

A British woman who went into coma after a reaction to hair dye has died after a year.

Julie McCabe, a 38-year-old estate agent from West Yorkshire town, fell ill in October 2011 after using a dye with which she regularly coloured her hair, The Sun reported.

The woman suffered a heart failure, struggled for breath and became unconsciousness. Her family blamed paraphenylenediamine, a chemical found in hair colour.

The woman was put on a 24-hour care on a life-support machine.

She left behind her 45-year-old husband, and two children aged 21 and 16.

Hyderabad Metro to be dedicated to nation next year

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project will be dedicated to the nation in December next year, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy said Sunday.

Inaugurating the work to set up launching girders on to the Metro rail pillars, the chief minister said the trials of the first phase of the Rs.16,375 crore project would begin in June 2014.

The chief minister formally started the hydraulic cranes for launching girders on the Metro pillars for the 72-km elevated rail project.

The Indian spin attack, led by Pragyan Ojha, captured eight England wickets to bowl out the visitors for 413 but the hosts conceded a lead of 86 runs on the third day of the second Test here today.

Reading, writing keep ageing brains healthy

Reading and writing can preserve brains of older people and insure them against deterioration as they age, says a new study.

Konstantinos Arfanakis and colleagues from Rush University Medical Centre and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, examined the effect of late-life cognitive activity on the brain’s white matter, composed of nerve fibres, or axons, that transmit information through the brain.

Previous research, unlike that of Arfanakis, had linked late-life cognitive activity with better mental sharpness, according to a statement from Rush University and Illinois Institute.
