Indian-origin hedge fund manager freed on USD 5 million bond

An Indian-origin hedge fund portfolio manager, charged with participating in one of the “most lucrative” insider trading schemes ever, has been released on a five million dollar bail after he appeared in Manhattan federal court here.

Mathew Martoma, 38, appeared in a brief court hearing yesterday before US Magistrate Judge James Cott and was informed of his rights as a criminal defendant.

Martoma, who was arrested last week at his home in Boca Raton, Florida, did not enter any plea and the judge set a next court hearing of December 26.

Facebook post row: Palghar magistrate R G Bagade transferred

A week after two girls were arrested for a Facebook post on Mumbai shutdown for Bal Thackeray’s funeral, the Bombay High Court has transferred the magistrate who had sent them to judicial custody and later granted them bail.

The transfer orders were issued yesterday by the Registrar of the High Court following which it was communicated to the Home Department, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Judicial Magistrate First Class R G Bagade.

The order said, “Judicial Magistrate First Class at Palghar R G Bagade is hereby transferred in the same position to Jalgaon with immediate effect.”

Man brutally murdered in Chatrinaka
(Siasat News): An unidentified man was brutally murdered at Chatrinaka in old city. It is said that the dead body of this man aged between 35 to 40 years, was recovered from the bushes near Katta Maisamma.

The body was in a semi-naked state. According to inspector Chatrinaka Mr. Narayan Reddy, the dead body was shifted to the mortuary for post mortem after panchnama.

CM sanctions separate commissionerate for minorities

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has given green signal for the establishment of separate commissionerate for minorities on completing two years in office on Sunday. He has signed the respective file in this connection. A total of 69 posts, including one post of commissioner, seven posts of deputy directors, five posts of assistant directors and 56 other posts have been sanctioned.

Chief Minister had announced the formation of separate commissionerate for minorities on the occasion of budget presentation for the year 2012-13 but its implementation and sanction took a long time.

Rama Malkote in a statement has said that Hyderabad Forum for Telangana strongly condemns illegal construction at Bhagya Lakshmi temple abetting Charminar. The forum expresses regrets over non performance and ineffective attitude of Archaeological Survey of India in strictly dealing against erecting temporary structure at Charminar.

1 in 3 people works on laptops and tablets in bed

One in three people are doing work on laptops and tablets in bed, with a growing number checking emails and browsing the Internet without dragging themselves out from under the covers, a new study has found.

A survey of 1,000 people in the UK found 35 per cent of people or their spouses worked in bed.

Astonishingly 5 per cent of those who admitted they worked in bed claimed they did so for an average two hours a day, the Daily Mail reported.

The trend seems to have begun in the US, where a survey in New York found eight out of ten young professionals regularly work from their bed.

No proof of UFOs flying over India-China border

Defence Minister A.K. Antony Monday told parliament that India was monitoring all developments in the neighbourhood which could impinge on national security and made it clear that there was no conclusive proof of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) over the border with China.

Antony was replying to a question in the Lok Sabha as to whether the Army’s Leh-headquartered 14 Corps had reported about mysterious UFOs flying over the India-China border during the last three years.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has been a part of Bollywood for 18 years, backs corporatisation of the industry and believes the positive changes it has brought about are “here to stay”.

Rani Mukerji is disheartened that not many went to see her latest release ‘Aiyyaa’ and says that actors always crave for adulation.

Produced by Anurag Kashyap and directed by debutant Sachin Kundalkar ‘Aiyyaa’ had Rani and south actor Prithviraj in lead roles. Rani played the role of a Marathi girl who falls in love with a Malayali boy.

However, the film did not create magic at the box office.

“Appreciation can only come if people watch the film. In case of ‘Aiyyaa’ probably people didn’t come. It is a very sad situation for me. We actors always crave for adulation,” Rani said.

“We will defeat terrorism,” teen peace activist Malala Yousufzai, currently recuperating in a British hospital after she was shot at by the Taliban, told journalist Hamid Mir after he escaped an attempt on his life Monday.

Malala, who is in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, made her first telephone call to Mir, Geo News reported Tuesday.

“Malala Yousafzai and her father just called me from UK and expressed their solidarity. Malala said that Insha Allah we will defeat terrorists,” Mir tweeted.

Adarsh scam accused Gidwani is dead

Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, businessman, former Congress leader and prime accused in the Adarsh housing corruption scandal, passed away early Tuesday following a heart attack, a family source said. He was 61.

Gidwani had been admitted to south Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following breathing problems two days ago. He breathed his last in the hospital early Tuesday, the family source added.

Arafat’s tomb dug up

Palestinian engineers Tuesday dug up the tomb of late leader Yasser Arafat to take samples from his remains for poison tests, sources said.

The head of the Palestinian committee investigating Arafat’s death, Tawfiq Tirawi, was present during the digging beside investigators and experts from Switzerland, France and Russia, Xinhua quoted sources as saying.

Arafat’s remains are still in the tomb, the sources said, adding that they will be exhumed and moved to a mosque near the tomb in the Palestinian presidency’s Ramallah headquarters.
