One in five Australian adults has mental illness

At least one in five Australian adults experiences a mental health difficulty in any given year, said a government report released Tuesday.

An estimated 7.29 million Australians aged 16 to 85 have suffered mental illness, Xinhua quoted the study by the National Mental Health Commission as saying.

Commission chairperson Allan Fels called on the Australian federal and state governments to reaffirm their commitment in dealing with mental health issues.

Sensex surges by 305 points

The BSE benchmark Sensex on Tuesday surged by 305 points the biggest gain in over two months on across-the-board buying after Moody’s said India’s rating outlook is stable.

Stock brokers said investors were also optimistic that the government will be able to push through economic reforms. The Sensex soared by 305.07 points, or 1.65 per cent, to 18,842.08, its biggest rally after September 21.

Reliance Industries shot up by 1.66 per cent to Rs 786.20 and software exporter Infosys by 2.17 per cent to Rs 2,469.15.

Five teenaged girls gang raped in Pakistan

Five teenaged girls from the same family were gang raped by two landlords and their aides in Pakistan’s Punjab province after a relative of the girls asked a landlord to pay him his wages, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Landlords Mara Jat and Zaheer Jat and their aides tied up labourer Mohammad Boota and his wife and raped the girls, aged between 13 and 18 years, at Kitro in Sheikhupura district yesterday.

Members of Boota’s family told the media that the girls were abducted by the landlords and taken into the fields, where they were gang raped.

Court remands Abu Jundal to judicial custody till December 10

LeT terrorist and 26/11 Mumbai attack key handler Abu Jundal was on Tuesday remanded to judicial custody till December 10 by a Delhi court in connection with a case lodged by the NIA against him for allegedly conspiring to launch terror strikes across the country.

Jundal was produced before District Judge I.S. Mehta, who had on Monday directed the Tihar Jail authorities to produce the accused before him, and the court sent him to jail under judicial custody for two weeks, the court sources said.

Two arrested for setting garments factory on fire in Bangladesh

Bangladesh police on Monday arrested two factory employees, including a woman, for allegedly setting on fire a readymade garments unit, a day after another inferno killed 112 workers of a nearby textile unit.

Two employees of Debonair factory in Ashulia area of suburban Savar identified as Sumi Begum and Zakir Hussain set ablaze the stockpiled cotton yesterday, but other employees doused the blaze before it could to other parts of the garment unit, a senior police official told PTI.

10 babies die in West Bengal, toll 25

Crib deaths are back in West Bengal’s hospitals. Ten babies have died in the Malda Medical College and Hospital, taking the toll to 25 since Saturday.

While families of the dead claimed negligence led to the deaths, the hospital authorities asserted that ailing children were brought in critical condition from far away places.

“Since Monday night, 10 more babies have died. The total such deaths now stand at 25 since Saturday,” hospital official Uchhal Kumar Bhadra told IANS Tuesday.

He rubbished claims of negligence in the hospital.

Three children killed in road mishap, 14 injured

Three students of nursery class were killed and 14 others sustained injuries when their school bus collided with another bus at Navsari here this morning, police said.

The mishap occurred at around 8 AM today when the school bus carrying children, in the age group of 3 to 7, from adjoining Walgaon, Khartalegaon and Kund Sarjapur villages, collided with a MSRTC mini bus coming towards Amravati from Paratwada at Navsari bypass intersection.

Vegetable trader killed in blast in Odisha

A vegetable trader was killed and two others were injured when some eve-teasers hurled a grenade at an industrial estate after some locals objected to their activities, police said on Tuesday.

The accused indulged in eve teasing the girls of the area when local youths objected to their activities last night.

Angry over opposition to their activities, the miscreants hurled the bomb last night, police said, adding Bauribandhu Choudhury (28), a vegetable trader, who was standing nearby was killed and two others sustained injuries.
