US poll can’t be postponed, despite Sandy havoc

Next Tuesday’s US Presidential Election apparently cannot be postponed despite the havoc caused by Hurricane Sandy that has flooded towns and cities up and down US east coast and left millions without power.

The election for President cannot be moved to a later date without passage of a new federal law as an 1845 law set the Tuesday immediately following the first Monday in November of every election year as Election Day across the country.

Three farmers commit suicide in Andhra

Three cotton farmers from Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh allegedly committed suicide owing to indebtedness and crop failure, police said today.

Bhimuni Kanakaiah (44), a cotton-grower from Suraiahpalli village killed himself by consuming pesticide in his field yesterday, they said, adding the deceased had borrowed a loan of Rs 2 lakh but failed to repay it as the crop failed due to deficient rains.

A case has been registered under Manthani police station limits.

China’s second stealth fighter makes maiden flight

China’s second stealth fighter, a middle sized fighter using Russian thrust engines, made its maiden flight Wednesday, state-run media reported Thursday.

Experts promptly hailed it as a milestone for the country’s military aviation industry, especially in design and manufacturing.

With provisional designation J-31 and serial number 31001, the fighter took off at 10.32 am Wednesday and landed 11 minutes later on the runway of the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), Liaoning province, a witness told the Global Times.

JFK, Newark airports reopen on limited schedule

Two of the biggest airports serving New York John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty International have reopened.

The first passenger flight to JFK arrived from Long Beach, California, at 7-04 a.m. on Wednesday. The JetBlue flight carried 150 passengers.

The first flight into Newark, New Jersey, was a FedEx plane that landed at 7-12 a.m.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Ron Marsico says the two airports reopened “on a very limited operational schedule.” He urged passengers to call their carriers before heading to the airports.

Security tightened in Farukkhabad ahead of Kejriwal’s protest

Security has been stepped up in Farukkhabad today in view of protests planned by Arvind Kejriwal and his associated against alleged irregularities by the trust run by Union Minister Salman Khurshid and his wife.

Congress workers have also announced to lodge their protest against Kejriwal in a democratic manner, sources said. Police said security has been tightened in the area in the wake of the protests planned by IAC and Congress workers.

Khurshid had dared Kejriwal to stage a protest in his constituency and had said “let him also return from Farrukhabad”.

A database of over 1,600 Chinese party and government leaders has gone online, ahead of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

It is a large-scale interactive database which has included more than 1,600 resumes of the current leaders and cadres of hundreds of departments and units, including central authority, State Council, mass organisations, provinces, municipalities, large central enterprises and universities, reported People’s Daily.

The data has been collected from published news reports, and online information.

Pakistan has approved a liberalised visa agreement with India that will relax curbs on issuing travel documents to traders, elderly people, tourists, pilgrims, members of the civil society and children, Xinhua reported.

Majority of Americans predict Obama will win re-election

With less than a week left for the November 6 presidential election, majority of Americans believe that US President Barack Obama is better poised to win the elections than his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the Gallup poll has said.

A majority of Americans continue to believe that Obama will win re-election over Romney, by 54 per cent to 34 per cent, the Gallup said which took the polls over the weekend on October 27 and 28.

“These views are roughly similar to where they were in May and August, although slightly more Americans now do not have an opinion either way,” it said.

Abducted NRI girl rescued in Uttar Pradesh

A 20-year old NRI girl who was abducted from Delhi nearly a fortnight ago, was rescued from Talheri village of Saharanpur district, police said on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip off, a team of officials raided a house in Talheri village where the girl was kept, they said, adding that two persons were also arrested in this connection.

The arrested accused are being interrogated Further probe into the matter is on, SSP Saharanpur DC Mishra said.

Gauri Bhonsle, daughter of diamond trader David Bhonsle, was abducted from a railway station in Delhi on October 15, he said.

New York subway to begin limited service today

The New York subway will begin its limited service from Thursday, an official said.

Limited commuter rail service on the Metro-North Railroad, a suburban rail service, and Long Island Rail Road, north America’s second busiest railroad, was expected to resume at 2 pm on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

New Team Manmohan gets going

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will on Thursday hold the first meeting of his new Council of Ministers since the Union Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday.

In the meeting, PM Singh is expected to set individual targets to be achieved in the remaining tenure of the UPA government.

122 missing as boat carrying Rohingya refugees sinks

At least 122 people, many of them suspected to be Myanmar’s Rohingya refugees, were feared missing when a boat carrying them to Malaysia sank in the Bay of Bengal near Bangladeshi waters, officials said today. “According to one of the six survivors, at least 122 people are still missing in the sea after the trawler capsized with 128 people onboard on October 27,” Border Guard Bangladesh’s (BGB) commanding officer of the Cox’s Bazar region Lieutenant Colonel Zahid Hassan told PTI over phone.
