Saeed’s aid offer ‘hollow’: US

US on Thursday dismissed as “hollow” the offer of humanitarian aid for superstorm Sandy victims from Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafeez Muhammad Saeed, the 2008 Mumbai attacks mastermind and for whom the US has offered a bounty of USD 10 million.

“As you all well know, Saeed is believed to be behind organising the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack in which 166 people were killed, including six Americans. That is why he is actually now the subject of a rewards for justice programme,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.

Blasphemy: Angry protesters set girls’ school on fire in Lahore

A large number of people, including activists of religious parties, ransacked and set on fire a girls’ school in Lahore and clashed with police following reports that a question paper for a test had contained blasphemous references to the Prophet (PBUH), police said today.

Activists of groups like the Jamaat-ud-Dawah and Islami Jamiat Talba, the students’ wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, and parents of some students were among those who yesterday vandalised three buildings of the Farooqi Girls High School, located near the historic Data Darbar shrine.

Qatar Airways has been directed by a district consumer forum here to pay Rs 80,005 to a flier for loss of his luggage in transit from Delhi to Milan.

The East District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum said that Qatar Airways is liable to reimburse Delhi resident Manish Raj Bhardwaj for loss as his baggage was lost due to negligence of the airline’s handling staff.

China may have 1.5 mn natural gas vehicles by 2015

China has the potential to become the world’s largest market for natural gas automobiles with 1.5 million vehicles expected to hit the roads by 2015, according to experts.

While attending a natural gas auto forum in southwest China, Brenda Smith, a council member of the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicles Association, said the world was ready to embrace an era of natural gas automobiles and China was leading the way, Xinhua reported.

Experts at the forum predicted as many as 1.5 million vehicles could be seen on the roads by 2015.

NRI beautician convicted in 2010 drunken driving case

NRI beautician Nooriya Haveliwala was today convicted by a special NDPS court for mowing down two persons, including a policeman, while driving her SUV under the influence of alcohol in 2010.

The court, however, acquitted her of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act charges.

The NDPS court judge I M Bohri will pronounce the quantum of punishment later in the day.

Militant arrested in Manipur

A militant identified as M D Musa of banned Kangleipak Communist Party-Noyon (KCP-N) was arrested by a combined team of commandos and Assam Rifles personnel from an interior village in Thoubal district of Manipur, official sources said on Thursday.

Security personnel launched a search operation at Sangai Yumpham area late last night following reports of movement of some ultras.

While Musa was nabbed, some others escaped under cover of darkness, the sources said.

S Lanka: 2 dead as heavy rains, winds create havoc

High speed winds and persistent rains created havoc in Sri Lanka as two people died and over 50,000 were left marooned on an island as a cyclone made a landfall on neighbouring India.

Disaster management officials said the two deaths were caused after earth mounds fell on houses.

“Over 50,000 people have been affected with two deaths. Some 4600 people are in relief camps numbering 26,” Pradeep Kodippily, a deputy director of the disaster management centre said.

Southern districts of Matara and Galle were badly affected with many roads going under water, Kodippily said.

Zardari’s dual office case hearing adjourned

A Pakistani court on Wednesday adjourned till November 7 the hearing of a case regarding the holding of dual offices by President Asif Ali Zardari following a request from the government’s lawyer.

An associate of Wasim Sajjad, the federal government’s lawyer, informed the four-judge bench headed by Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial that lawyers were preoccupied with elections to the Supreme Court Bar Association. He sought the adjournment of the case, following which the Chief Justice put off the hearing till next month.
