Russia boosts security at missile launch sites

Russia is strengthening the security of its missile launching sites in the wake of rising potential threats.

The Russian Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) are finalising the modernisation of automated security systems at nine of its major missile bases, said SMF spokesperson Colonel Vadim Koval on Wednesday.

The step is being undertaken to counter the growing threat of potential terrorist attacks, he added.

“The modernisation includes the upgrade of warning and surveillance systems, detection sensors, integrated fire control systems and power supply grids,” the spokesperson said.

Chidambaram meets foreign institutional investors

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday updated foreign institutional investors (FIIs) about the recent reform measures taken by the government to revive economic growth.

During nearly 30 minutes of meeting at his North Block office here, the finance minister assured the institutional investors about the government’s commitment to push forward the reform process.

“They (foreign institutional investors) wanted a meeting to know where the economy is headed. They wanted an update and I explained to them,” Chidambaram told reporters after the meeting.

Man kills wife over suspected extramarital affairs

A 29-year-old man killed his wife here on the suspicion that she had extramarital affairs, police said Thursday. The accused has been arrested.

Devender killed his wife Phoolwati, 26, Wednesday night in Holambikalan area in north Delhi, police said.

“The accused was arrested from his house today (Thursday) morning,” said a police officer.

After a heated argument at their house, Devender beat his wife with a stone causing her death, said the officer.

The victim’s body bore several injury marks, he said.

China’s largest unmanned helicopter enters service

The largest unmanned helicopter ever manufactured by China is now in service in Shandong province, authorities said on Thursday.

The mid-sized helicopter has passed all required flight tests and is fully operational, reported Xinhua.

The helicopter, capable of flying as high as 3,000 meters at a top speed of 161 km per hour with a payload of 80 kg, can be controlled from a maximum distance of 150 km or programmed to fly automatically, said Cheng Shenzong, the board chairman of Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry Co Ltd, a company that helped develop the aircraft.

Oil India Ltd on Thursday said it has started drilling operations in Gabon, South Africa for hydrocarbon exploration.

The beginning of drilling on the first well in Gabon by India’s flagship explorer was done on Sunday in the presence of senior officials of OIL and Punj Lloyd Upstream Ltd which has the contract for rig service, OIL said in a release.

Death penalty for ex-Iraqi vice president

An Iraqi court Thursday issued for the second time the death sentence in absentia against fugitive former vice president Tariq al-Hashimi.

The Central Criminal Court of Iraq (CCCI) has also issued the death penalty in absentia against Hashimi’s son-in-law Ahmed Qahtan, Xinhua reported.

Both are accused of inciting their bodyguards to plant a bomb in the car of an interior ministry officer. The court had first issued the death sentence against them Sep 9.

Hashimi and Qahtan are believed to be in hiding in Turkey.

Presidential elections considered crucial to Afghanistan’s security and stability will be held on schedule in April 2014, the country’s election commission announced on Wednesday.

The decision eased concerns that President Hamid Karzai would seek to delay the election despite his repeated assurances that he would not.

Karzai is not allowed to run for a third term and has said he will not stay on after his current five-year mandate ends. The previous presidential elections, held in late 2009, were marred by allegations of widespread fraud.

Pregnant woman crushed to death in Amritsar

A pregnant woman was crushed to death by a bus here on Wednesday, police said.

The deceased, identified as Kamaljit Kaur, was the pillion rider on a scooter with her husband when the bus hit their vehicle from rear, police said.

Police said that Kaur’s husband and their minor daughter who were also riding the scooter had a narrow escape in the mishap.

After the incident, a mob of the area set the bus ablaze. However, driver of the bus and conductor fled after the accident.

A relative of deceased told that Kamaljit Kaur was pregnant.

Former Punjab minister Bibi Jagir Kaur was on Thursday granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High court about seven months after her conviction in a case for conspiring in forcible abduction, kidnapping and wrongful confinement in connection with the killing of her daughter.

Handing down the orders, a division bench of the court comprising Justice AK Mittal and Justice GS Sandhawalia directed Kaur to seek the court’s permission before going abroad, Kaur’s counsel RS Cheema said.

The USD 1 billion replica of the Taj Mahal that the developers are planning to build in Dubai will be four times bigger than the original monument.

The replica — Taj Arabia — will include one million sq ft of retail space besides a 300-room hotel.

According to Link Global, the company behind the project, there are plans to build a replica of the Taj Mahal in Dubai’s USD 36.5 billion Falcon City of Wonders — a multi-purpose project being developed in Dubai.

When complete, Taj Arabia will be four times the size of India’s architectural marvel in Agra, according to reports.

Government withdraws RTI Act amendments

Under pressure from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Manmohan Singh government Thursday withdrew the controversial amendments aimed at diluting the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

“The cabinet decided to withdraw the amendments to the RTI Act,” a government source told IANS after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The campaign against the amendments was led by activist Aruna Roy, a member of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council.

Remo D`Souza to host dance workshops across 16 cities

Choreographer-turned-director Remo D`Souza is set to organise dance workshops across 16 cities as part of the promotional campaign for his new film “Any Body Can Dance” (ABCD).

The cast and the crew of the film plan to visit different cities and set-up daylong workshops. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the film features Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya and winners of a dance reality show.

“The idea is to spread the message that dance is for everyone,” Remo said in a statement.
