World’s longest married couple is from Punjab

Karam Chand and his wife Katari, who have eight children and 28 grandchildren, have been married for 87 years, making them the world’s longest married couple.

The pair say that the key to success is looking after each other in every way possible: “My trick is to make Katari laugh. I like to tell jokes and make her smile. Being funny is my way of being romantic,” says 107-year-old Karam.

The sixth edition of Bigg Boss had its first brush with controversy today as suspected RPI activists attacked an office of Colors TV channel over demands to eliminate contestant Aseem Trivedi from the reality show. The Ramdas Athavale-led Republican Party of India (RPI) objected to Trivedi’s participation, saying the cartoonist had “hurt the sentiments” of the Dalit community with his cartoons that had “grossly insulted” the national emblem and other constitutional symbols.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan says his wife Gauri is the boss at home and that he’s not allowed to interfere when it comes to doing up the interiors of the house.

“It’s Gauri who decides what interior stuff to buy for home and what not, I am not allowed to say anything. But as far as the office is concerned. I am the boss,” Shah Rukh said at the launch of Vanita and Omung Kumar’s furnishing store Bioscopewalli, Wednesday.

Omung Kumar and wife Vanita are well-known Bollywood set designers and have worked in films like “Black”, “Saawariya” and “Yuvvraaj”.

Israel admits ‘killing top PLO commander Abu Jihad’

Abu Jihad, whose real name was Khalil al-Wazir, was shot dead in the early hours of April 16, 1988 in a commando raid on the PLO headquarters by what was presumed to be Israeli agents.

Chronic kidney disease can kill at any age

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its complications can kill at any age, warns a new study.

The study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that the prevalence of CKD shoots up with age from four percent between 20 and 39 years to 54 percent among adults who have crossed 75 years.

Bloomberg researchers analysed data involving more than two million participants across Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America, from 46 studies conducted from 1972 to 2011, the journal JAMA reported.

Cheaper carbon replaces silicon in solar panels

Researchers have built the first solar cell made entirely of carbon, a promising alternative to more expensive silicon, used in photovoltaic panels currently.

“Carbon has the potential to deliver high performance at a low cost,” said study senior author Zhenan Bao, professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University.

“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a working solar cell that has all of the components made of carbon. This study builds on previous work done in our lab,” said Bao.

‘Muslim man’s power to divorce not unrestricted’

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has held that a Muslim man’s power to divorce his wife is not “unrestricted or unqualified”.

Justice Hasnain Masoodi in his 23-page judgment extensively went into details of the Shariah law and Quranic injunctions to hold that a “husband cannot have unrestricted or unqualified power to pronounce the Talaaq.”

The court delved into the fundamental sources of Shariah law to understand the concept of marriage in Islam, the rights of the parties to the marriage contract and the mode and manner the contract is dissolved.

10 militants killed in Pakistan

Ten militants were killed in air raids conducted by the army in Pakistan Thursday.

The army, using helicopters, targeted militant hideouts in Khyber tribal area near the Afghan border.

Four militant hideouts were destroyed, Xinhua reported.

Mamata asks parties to oppose cooking gas cylinder price hike

In the wake of yet another hike in cooking gas prices, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday described the Congress-led central government as “irresponsible and intolerable”, and urged all political parties to oppose the move.

“The present United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is really becoming irresponsible and intolerable. Time is running out. I would appeal to political parties, even those who are extending outside support, to stand up and be bold to oppose this decision. Christmas Day T20 in Bangalore to kick-off India-Pakistan series

The India-Pakistan limited overs cricket series will start in Bangalore with the first Twenty20 international slated for Christmas Day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Thursday.

The second Twenty20 will be held in Ahmedabad while the three ODIs will be hosted by Chennai (Dec 30), Kolkata (Jan 3) and New Delhi (Jan 6). Pakistan will leave for home Jan 7.

The home ministry Tuesday cleared the Pakistan cricket team’s tour to India. It has also agreed to ensure security for the visiting team, according to officials.

Fasih Mahmood’s custody given to Bangalore cops

The custody of Fasih Mahmood, a suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist involved in blasts in Bangalore and Delhi in 2010, was given to Bangalore police by a court here Thursday.

Additional Sessions Judge Asha Menon handed the custody of Mahmood to Bangalore police after investigators in Delhi told the court that his questioning was over.

Bangalore police, while seeking custody of Mahmood, told the court that they wanted to interrogate him over his alleged role in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore.

American sentenced to five years in jail

An India-born American woman was Thursday sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment for killing two people with her car.

Special Judge I.M. Bohri pronounced Nooriya Haveliwala guilty and fined her Rs.5 lakh too.

Haveliwala was arrested in January 2010 after she drove her car into six people on the Marine Drive in south Mumbai. Two of them, including a police sub-inspector, were killed.

Haveliwala, then 27, had rammed her car into a police jeep, a taxi and a motorcycle while on her way home to Colaba in south Mumbai.

With demands for affordable education for wards of overseas Indians growing, India has revived the idea of a university to cater to this need, with Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi giving a pledge at the mini Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Mauritius.

Though the contours of the university, its courses and structure is to be worked out, Ravi told IANS in an interview here that the institution may have affiliate colleges across the world, so as to enable the children of non-resident Indians (NRIs) to get education at an affordable cost.

Janta Party president Subramanian Swamy alleged that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul “fraudently” converted a public trust into private property, at a press conference organized by him in New Delhi on Thursday. The two Congress leaders acquired a Rs. 1,600 cr property called ‘Herald House’ and owned by Associated Journals Ltd in Delhi for just Rs. 50 lakh, he alleged.

Swamy alleged the Rahul and Sonia had a 76% stake in a private company ‘Young Indian’, which was used to take over Associated Journals and acquire Herald House.

Wipro to hive-off non-IT biz into unlisted arm; stock up 7%

IT giant Wipro on Thursday said it will demerge three non-IT business divisions, including consumer products segment, into a privately-held company to be named Wipro Enterprises Ltd.

The new unlisted firm will include Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting (including furniture business), Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (hydraulics and water businesses) and Medical Diagnostic Product & Services business, Wipro said in a filing to the BSE.

Following the move, shares of the IT major surged nearly 7 percent to Rs 375 on the BSE in the morning trade.

Holding that “high” fiscal deficit is a deterrent for domestic and foreign investments, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the government will have to overcome constraints to achieve a target of nearly USD one trillion of investment in infrastructure sectors.

Maryam Jameelah, a New York based Jewish woman who reverted to Islam at the age of 27, passed away in Lahore yesterday. Maryam Jameelah formerly Margret Marcus, was born in New York in a non-observant Jewish family but at the age of nineteen, she developed a keen interest in religion. She explored Judaism and other faiths and converted to Islam in 1961 after meeting Abul Ala Maudoodi. She left for Pakistan the following year in 1962 and had never returned to the United States.

Doctors collect Akansha’s drugs after autopsy doubts

Ten days after the mysterious death of Indore-based woman industrialist Akansha Rathi in Delhi, doctors have failed to reach any conclusion on the cause of her death. A team of Delhi hospital doctors on Thursday visited her house here to collect the medicines she was taking.

The doctors’ team from the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital was accompanied by police officials.

Rathi, 32, was found dead at her parents’ house in Sansad Vihar Apartment, located in south subcity Dwarka Oct 23. She was rushed to Rockland Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. Her father informed the police.

Former Punjab minister Bibi Jagir Kaur was on Thursday granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High court about seven months after her conviction in a case for conspiring in forcible abduction, kidnapping and wrongful confinement in connection with the killing of her daughter.

Handing down the orders, a division bench of the court comprising Justice AK Mittal and Justice GS Sandhawalia directed Kaur to seek the court’s permission before going abroad, Kaur’s counsel RS Cheema said.

Pakistan to kick start India tour with a T20 game in Bangalore

A day after the Home Ministry cleared Pakistan cricket team’s upcoming tour of India, the BCCI on Thursday announced the schedule of the limited-over series that begins with a Twenty20 international on December 25 in Bangalore.

The Pakistan team will touch down at Bangalore on December 22 and will kick-off their campaign against the hosts with a T20 international at the city’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The visitors will then move to Ahmedabad for the second T20 game (December 27) before heading to Chennai for the first of the three-match ODI series on December 30.
