The Congress Friday said it had done its duty in supporting The Associated Journals Limited, publisher of National Herald and other newspapers, in the form of an interest-free loan from which no commercial profit accrued to the party.

“The Indian National Congress (INC) has done its duty in supporting The Associated Journals Limited to help initiate a process to bring the newspaper back to health in compliance with the laws of the land,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement issued here.

Village housewife commits suicide along with her two children

In a tragic incident, a 30-year-old woman today committed suicide by jumping into a well, along with her two children at Dhageboregaon in Jalna tehsil. Police sources said that dead bodies of Pushpa alias Usha Sunil Tarashe and her children Sheetal (9) and Yogesh (5) were found floating in a well. With the help of villagers, the police fished out their bodies and sent them for postmortem. Police suspect domestic reasons behind the suicide. The deceased’s husband Sunil, who is farmer, is being interrogated, the police said. PTI

Azad Maidan violence: 14 accused get bail

A sessions court today granted bail to 14 accused, arrested for their alleged role in the Azad Maidan violence in south Mumbai on August 11. The bail order came a week after the Bombay High Court granted bail to four other accused. Five of the 63 accused had been earlier discharged after police found that there was no case against them. Two youths were killed and 52, including 44 policemen, injured on August 11, when a rally called to protest the alleged atrocities on the minority community in Assam and Myanmar turned violent.

Husband who killed female police constable commits suicide

Prashant Pandurang Patil, the husband of the estranged female police constable who allegedly killed and left her body naked, committed suicide in Nashik district on Friday. Nanalpeth police said that constable Chitra Madhukar Patil (27) was killed and her body was left in the police quarter in Parbhani. Her sister Ranjana Ravindra Warale informed the police about the incident. Police said that her husband was working in a Nashik-based company. He was missing after the incident and was later found hanging from a tree, in a field in Nashik, the police said. PTI

A 11th Standard girl was found dead, reportedly after consuming poison, in the toilet of a private school at nearby Tirupur, today, police said. NASA’s shuttle Atlantis makes its finaljourney

After 32 missions and more than 125 million miles in space at speeds around 17,500 miles per hour, NASA’s space shuttle Atlantis covered its final journey Friday.

This time, however, it was travelling over land at speeds as slow as 2 mph (3.2 kmph) to its final resting place at the Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex in Florida state.

“I think that the shuttle was a great book, it really was, and this little part is like the epilogue,” said Chris Ferguson, commander of the last Atlantis mission, which blasted off July 8, 2011, the final flight in NASA’s shuttle program.

Seven jailed for selling gutter oil in China

A total of seven people in China’s Hebei province have been awarded jail terms up to 15 years for manufacturing and selling “gutter oil”, a recycled oil made from kitchen waste.

Four managers of a cooking oil firm in Xingtai city and three other employees were convicted for selling about 238 tonnes of dirty chicken salad oil for over 2 million yuan ( about $328,000) in 2011, Xinhua quoted the Nanhe County people’s court as saying in its verdict Friday.

The unsafe edible oil was made from substandard chicken oil and animal oil used in animal feedstuff, the court said.
