Mamata Banerjee pulls out `anti-government` film from Kolkata theatre

Kolkata, November 03: The state-run Star Theatre in Kolkata on Saturday stopped the screening of Bengali film ‘Teen Kanya’ on the premise that it sends out an anti-state message.

West Bengal education minister Bratya Basu features in the movie. The movie, released Friday, is a suspense thriller directed by Agnideb Chattopadhyay and stars noted actresses Rituparna Sengupta and Ananya Chatterjee.

Though it continues to be screened in private theatres, it has been pulled out of the Star Theatre.

Drying laundry indoors bad for health

Drying clothes indoors could cause health problems, particularly to those prone to asthma, hay fever and other allergies, say researchers.

A study found many homes in Britain had too much moisture indoors and up to 30 percent of this was caused by laundry, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

The researchers said three-quarters of homes surveyed had moisture levels that could lead to dust mite growth and were at risk of increased concentration of mould spores.

The reduction in air quality has been tied to asthma and other allergic conditions.

12th Plan will triple spending on health: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said the 12th Five Year Plan will enhance spending on health up to three times and that more medical and nursing colleges were needed to overcome a shortage of trained human resources in the sector.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying of the Lady Hardinge Medical College project here, the prime minister also said that health indicators reflected a country`s overall well-being.

Omar Abdullah surrenders extra LPG connections

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed Saturday he had surrendered two of the three LPG connections in his name.

“As promised two of the three LPG connections surrendered this morning,” Abdullah posted on the micro-blogging Twitter site Saturday morning.

As per new norms by oil companies, one family can hold only one authorised LPG connection.

Abdullah is not the only one to have more than one LPG connection.

Former Maoists meet Mamata, demand rehab package

Two former Maoist guerrillas, who were detained Saturday for wandering near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence, later met her and complained that they were yet to get the promised rehabilitation package.

The duo were detained after they were found wandering near Banerjee’s house in Bhowanipore. They were trying to meet Banerjee.

The two were brought to the state secretariat – the Writers’ Buildings – where they finally met the chief minister.

Pakistan’s top court orders action against Taliban

The Supreme Court Saturday ordered the law enforcement agencies to take infiltration of the militants in Karachi seriously, a day after Pakistani Taliban threatened to attack leaders of a political group in the southern port city.

Taliban spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan said Friday that the militants have decided to target the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in its Karachi stronghold as the group has been critical of the Taliban’s policies, Xinhua reported citing media reports.

Delhi court seeks Jundal’s presence Nov 26

A Delhi court Saturday issued a production warrant to Tihar Jail authorities to present Mumbai terror attack suspect Abu Jundal Nov 26. He is currently in the custody of Gujarat Police.

District Judge I.S. Mehta issued the warrant against Jundal in a case filed by the National Investigation Agency.

The NIA lodged the case against Jundal for a conspiracy to organised terror attacks.

Cops shielding Salman Khan

Former cop-turned-lawyer and activist Y.P. Singh Friday lashed out at Mumbai Police for allegedly ‘helping’ actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit and run case. Khan had rammed into a bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one and injuring four others sleeping on a pavement, September 28, 2002.
Singh pointed out that the trial in the case has been going on for over 10 years; there is little progress. He added it is evident that the police department was responsible for delaying things.

Sukhbir Badal to visit Pakistan, explore deeper trade ties

Hailing the opening of trade ties through the Attari-Wagah border, Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said he would visit Pakistan on Monday to explore strengthening trade between “eastern” and “western” Punjab (in Pakistan).

Badal said that Punjab had been waiting to be allowed to export its agricultural produce, including wheat and paddy, directly to Pakistan and Central Asian countries, as also Iran, by road.

He said that the opening of the Attari-Wagah border for trade was a “game-changer,” with a potentially huge impact for all of north India.

Russian satellites reach orbit

Two satellites launched Saturday have successfully reached orbit, Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said.

“The separation of the Yamal-300K from the Briz-M booster went smoothly, and to schedule,” a Roscosmos spokesman told RIA Novosti Saturday, adding that the same was true of the Luch 5B relay satellite.

The Russian Proton-M launch vehicle carrying Yamal-300K telecoms satellite and Luch 5B relay satellite lifted off earlier Saturday from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan.

The satellites were built by Russia’s Reshetnev space company.

Terror suspect Fasih remanded to police custody till Nov 16

Suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist and an accused in Delhi and Bangalore blasts Fasih Mohammad, who has been handed over to Bangalore police by a Delhi court, was brought here.

Fasih, brought here last evening, was remanded to police custody till November 16, a top police official said.

“Fasih Mohammad was brought by our team last evening itself. He was produced before the first Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Venkatesh Hulagi and remanded to police custody till November 16”, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) B Dayanand told a news agency.

Gold prices dip below 31, 000 level on global cues

Gold fell to over two-month low of Rs. 30,950 per 10 grams in the bullion market in New Delhi on Saturday driven by a sharp fall in prices overseas, while silver nosedived by Rs. 1,500 per kg on poor off-take.

While gold lost Rs. 270 to Rs 30,950 per 10 grams, while silver shed Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 58,000 per kg.

Traders said sentiment weakened on global trend where precious metal’s tumbled the most in more than four months to below USD 1,700 an ounce as US payrolls in October rose more than forecast, easing pressure on the Federal Reserve to expand monetary stimulus.

Flood situation grim in Andhra Pradesh

Floods in Andhra Pradesh triggered by cyclone ‘Nilam’ and north-west monsoon inundated villages and caused widespread damage to crops Saturday, officials said.

Over 100 villages were cut off and A few towns including Vijayawada faced inundation as heavy rains continue to lash coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana region for the fourth consecutive day.

Rivulets, tanks and reservoirs were overflowing in eight districts, where normal life was hit. Rains claimed eight lives and damaged crops over 77,000 hectares during last four days.

TRS postpones politburo meeting to Nov 7

Controversial cartoonist Aseem Trivedi wants to take his fight against corruption to a new level by opening a school to educate the youth on organised forms of activism.

The thought of such an institution came to him during his stay in TV reality show “Bigg Boss 6”.

“I thought a lot about the new things I can do about the cause that I fight for. One is a School of Activism. I think it is important for people to learn organised forms of activism, RTI being one of them,” Trivedi told IANS post his eviction from the show Friday night.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday said that Sachin Tendulkar getting some runs under his belt in the Ranji Trophy match before the upcoming four-Test series against England is a good sign.

“He is one the most hardworking studious guys you come across. I think Sachin would have got enough time to think about how he got out. If he has got the runs now, obviously he has worked hard for it.

“The evidence will be seen in the Test matches. The fact that he has got runs is a good sign,” Gavaskar told reporters.

Public authorities failed to comply with RTI provisions: CIC Satyananda Mishra

Chief information commissioner Satyananda Mishra on Saturday slammed public authorities for failing to comply with the suo-motu disclosure provisions of the Right to Information Act even after seven years of the implementation of the Act.

Referring to section four of the RTI Act which mandates public authorities to make proactive disclosures and organise records within 120 days of enactment of transparency law in 2005, Mishra said these statutory provisions are not complied with even after seven years.

Allocation for health sector enhanced three-fold: PM

Recognising the need to address complex challenges in the health sector, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said allocation for it has been enhanced by about three times in the 12th plan period with enhanced thrust on nutrition and sanitation.

He also noted that free generic drugs will be made available through all public hospitals in the country to help in “reducing out of pocket expenditure of the poor” on health.

FIR against Johar’s SOTY team for `hurting religious feelings’

Court issues production warrant against Abu Jundal

LeT Terrorist and 26/11 Mumbai attack key handler Abu Jundal was on Saturday ordered to be produced before it by a Delhi court on November 26, 2012 as he could not appear before it after expiry of his judicial custody period.

District Judge (DJ) I.S. Mehta issued a production warrant against Jundal for his appearance in the court after jail authorities told it that he was in the custody of Gujarat ATS, court sources said.
