Uddhav Thackeray to undergo second angioplasty

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray will Sunday undergo the second phase of his angioplasty procedure here, a party official said Sunday.

He has already been admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

Uddhav, 51, underwent the first angioplasty in the same hospital July 20 and all three blockages in his artery were successfully removed after a surgery of nearly three hours.

The party official said that the second procedure was suggested for Uddhav during follow-up checkup after the first angioplasty in July.

Army Chief to visit Sri Lanka next month

Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh will travel to Sri Lanka next month to discuss ways to further strengthen military ties between the two countries at a time when political parties in Tamil Nadu are up in arms against any kind of defence cooperation with Colombo.

Gen Bikram Singh is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in the third week of December and dates are being finalised by the officials of the two sides, Army sources said here.

US soldier due in court over 9 Afghan children massacre

A US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers is due in court tomorrow for the first time since the March massacre, in a pre-trial hearing to decide if he should face a full court martial.

Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is expected to attend throughout the Nov 5-16 Article 32 hearing at Fort Lewis-McChord in the western state of Washington, base spokesman Gary Dangerfield told AFP.

Relatives of the victims and witnesses could testify via videolink from a US air base in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, according to media reports, although the spokesman could not confirm that.

30 percent polling in Himachal by noon

Himachal Pradesh recorded nearly 30 percent voter turnout by 12 noon Sunday after a sluggish start to polling in the 68 state assembly constituencies.

“The voter turnout was just nine percent in the first hour but by noon, it rose to 30 percent,” the state’s Chief Electoral Officer Narinder Chauhan told IANS.

“The maximum turnout was in Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Solan districts,” he said.

Officials said there was no report of any delay in starting the poll process. The polling will end at 5 p.m.

The officials expect heavy polling since the weather is clear and sunny.

BJP leader L.K. Advani Sunday slammed the arrest of Puducherry RTI activist S. Ravi for his tweets on the wealth of Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s son Karti, saying it only reflected the 1975 emergency mindset.

In his latest blog posted on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) website, Advani said there was not a single movie in the Indian filmdom on the 21-month Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, precisely due to fears that the filmmaker would have to face the wrath of the the powers that be.

Sikkim to give houses to 30,000 people

The Sikkim government will provide houses to 30,000 people from the economically weaker sections, a state government statement said Sunday.

“The houses will be provided to people living in ‘kutcha’ houses as on January 1, 2011,” it said.

This scheme is part of Mission Poverty Free Sikkim.

“Each house will have four rooms comprising two bedrooms, a kitchen-cum-dining room, a toilet and a verandah, measuring a total plinth area of 605 square feet”.

Chandrababu Naidu resumes padyatra today

Gutkha ban ‘discriminatory’, cigarettes still sold: STA

With 14 state governments banning gutkha, an association working for the welfare of smokeless tobacco growers has termed the ban as “discriminatory”, saying cigarettes and beedis were still being sold in the market.

Smokeless Tobacco Association also said the sale of gutkha cannot be banned under the Food Safety and Standards Regulation Act-2011 as it has been done now, as gutkha has been classified as a tobacco product under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act-2003 (COTPA).

As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney go on a final campaign sprint, new polls in two smaller battleground states show a close race in one and a five point advantage for the president in another.

In Iowa, which has six electoral votes, Obama has an edge over the Republican challenger Mitt Romney among likely voters, 47 percent to 42 percent, according to a Des Moines Register Iowa Poll.

The race for four electoral votes in New Hampshire is a dead heat, according to the WMUR Granite State Poll. Obama and Romney are tied at 47 percent among likely voters, the poll showed.

Air India withdraws two flights to Odisha

State-run Air India has cancelled two of its Odisha-bound flights from Monday, an Air India official said here Sunday.

The Chennai-Bhubaneswar-Chennai flight number 537 and Bhubaneswar-Kolkata-Bhubaneswar flight number 770 stand withdrawn with effect from Nov 5, the official told IANS.

He, however, could not explain the reason behind the cancellation of the flights.

“I don’t know the reason,” he said.

Tour operators in the state have expressed concern over the way the flights were cancelled ahead of the onset of peak tourist season.

Japan pulls out of tourism fair in China

Japan will not be taking part in Shanghai’s big international tourism fair amid diplomatic tension with China over a territorial dispute, Japanese television channel NHK said Saturday.

According to the network, the organizers of this month’s event asked early this week that the Japanese Tourism Agency cancel its participation, without offering further explanations.

Besides the Japanese agency, the 29 tourist and municipal organizations in Japan that were thinking of attending the Shanghai fair have opted out, according to NHK.

Naxals attack CISF post in Chhattisgarh; one trooper killed

A CISF trooper was today killed while another was injured in an attack by naxals on a security post in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.

The attack took place early morning in the Bacheli complex of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) mines, which is guarded by the paramilitary.

The naxals have also looted two weapons, a senior official said.

Security forces have launched a combing operation in the area and reinforcements have been rushed.
