Venkaiah hopes vote increase if Modi is projected as BJP PM

The Bharatiya Janata Party predicted that if the Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Narender Modi is projected as the prime ministerial candidate in the general elections 2014, then the voting percentage of BJP in the Seema-andhra regions would increase at least up to 10. Stating this, the party senior leader Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, announced that BJP is ready to face even the interim elections.

Neelam’s destruction continues, death toll rises to 22

The State Government on Sunday confirmed the death of 22 people due to cyclone “Neelam” related incidents.

Addressing a press conference at the State Secretariat, Disaster Management Commissioner P Radha said that the maximum seven deaths have been reported from East Godavari district. He said nearly 67,819 people of 21,655 families have been shifted to 86 relief camps set up in the affected districts. He said safe drinking water, food and medical assistance was being supplied in the relief camps and other affected areas.

Police begin probe into Yerran Naidu’s accident

The State Police on Sunday began probe into the factors that led to the death of former Union Minister and TDP senior leader K Yerran Naidu in a tragic road mishap.

Yerran Naidu met with the accident when the car he, along with four others, was traveling in hit an oil tanker from behind near Ranasthalam in the wee hours of Friday. The TDP leader suffered grievous bleeding injuries and died after being shifted to a hospital. However, there are allegations that the ambulance came very late after the accident and it did not even had an oxygen cylinder.

17 killed as rains batter Andhra

Torrential rains continued to batter coastal Andhra Pradesh Sunday, claiming 17 lives, inundating hundreds of villages, paralysing road and rail traffic, and damaging crops.

The rains triggered by northeast monsoon and Cyclone Nilam, which crossed the coast near Chennai Wednesday, have so far killed 17 people, said T. Radha, commissioner, disaster management.

Incessant rains in eight districts of Andhea Pradesh have damaged 480 houses completely and 766 houses partially. Standing crops in over 250,000 hectares were also damaged.

FDI in retail will benefit common man: PM

Accusing the opposition of spreading misinformation regarding policy initiatives taken by UPA, a combative Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said reform measures, including FDI in retail, will benefit the common man and create more jobs.

Addressing a Congress rally at the Ramlila Maidan here, he said Congress party and the government were committed to create a prosperous India but the people have to travel a long distance to achieve that goal.

Thousands pour in for Congress rally

Thousands of Congress party workers were still pouring in at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital where the party held a huge rally Sunday to support the government’s economic reforms and policies.

“Around 2,000 buses ferried party supporters at the gathering,” a party worker told IANS.

Party supporters converged at Ramlila Maidan for the rally from Haryana, Rajasthan and other nearby states.

Fearing congestion, traffic police specified routes to avoid till afternoon. This included National Highway-8, Dhaula Kuan Ring Road, Ashram Chowk and Sarai Kale Khan.

Mamata stops screening of ‘Teen Kanya’

Banning the screening of a Bengali film ‘Teen Kanya’ evoked high-voltage controversy in the state. The film that portrays the controversial Park Street rape incident was banned at the state-run theatre in north Kolkata, 24 hours after its release, on the ground that it hurts the image of the state administrative machinery. The film directed by Agnidev Chattopadhyaya was released on Friday after Censor Board’s certification.

However state home secretary Basudeb Banerjee said the government played no role in banning the screening.

Eight minor girls rescued, trafficker arrested

Eight minor girls who were to be sent to Mumbai as part of a trafficking ring were rescued from Sonitpur district this morning and a woman arrested for her alleged involvement in the incident.

All the girls, belonging to the Adivasi community in Barowa near Tezpur, were rescued from a house here after a tip off, police said.

Shakuntala Telenga was nabbed for allegedly trafficking the girls, they said.
