Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday criticised the State Government for legislating the SC, ST Sub-Plan.
Addressing the State BJP SC Morcha Convention at party’s State headquarters at Nampally, Venkaiah Naidu said that the the SC, ST Sub-Plan was only approved by the State Cabinet and therefore, it lacks legal status. He said if the government was genuinely serious, then it should have brought legislation for the Sub-Plan.

Police begin probe into Yerran Naidu’s accident

Srikakulam, Nov 4 (INN): The State Police on Sunday began probe into the factors that led to the death of former Union Minister and TDP senior leader K Yerran Naidu in a tragic road mishap.

Yerran Naidu met with the accident when the car he, along with four others, was traveling in hit an oil tanker from behind near Ranasthalam in the wee hours of Friday.
The TDP leader suffered grievous bleeding injuries and died after being shifted to a hospital. However, there are allegations that the ambulance came very late after the accident and it did not even had an oxygen cylinder.

Zardari to visit Qatar

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari will visit Qatar for two days from Tuesday for dialogue on bilateral and regional issues, officials said Sunday. The issue of raging Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan is also likely to be discussed during the visit.

The president will hold talks with Qatar’s Emir and the prime minister with particular focus on promoting trade and investment ties in a bid to boost bilateral ties, an official was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

During his visit Zardari will also meet eminent Qatari businessmen and invite them to invest more in Pakistan.

10 drown as boat sinks in Mediterranean

At least 10 people drowned and 70 others were rescued after their boat sank between the Libyan coast and the Italian Island of Lampedusa, local media reported Sunday.

After recovering bodies of three women overnight, Italy’s coast guards recovered the bodies of seven others would-be migrants in the Mediterranean, about 35 miles from the Libyan coast, according to Ansa news agency, reported Xinhua.

The survivors, including a pregnant woman, had spent hours clinging to the hull of a motorised raft. They were being taken to Lampedusa.

Sharmila completes 12 years fast tomorrow

Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on a hunger strike since 2000 demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), will be completing 12 years of fast tomorrow.

Sharmila, a civil rights activist, began her hunger strike after the death of ten people in an alleged encounter with the Assam Rifles at Malom in Imphal valley on November 2, 2000.

She has been demanding repeal of AFSPA which the human rights activists hold as a draconian law.

Currently she is in judicial custody where she is forcibly fed through her nose.

Minor alleges rape by 12 men in Haryana

A teenaged girl from Karnal district in Haryana has alleged that she was raped by 12 men, police said Sunday. An accused known to her was arrested.

The 16-year-old victim, who belongs to Tarwari area, was rescued by railway police personnel from the Karnal railway station, where she had been dumped by one of her tormentors.

She underwent a medical examination, police said.

The girl told police that she was taken by a man, who was her friend and had promised to marry her. She alleged that later, 11 other men came and raped her Friday and Saturday.

22 killed as rains batter Andhra

Torrential rains continued to batter coastal Andhra Pradesh Sunday, claiming 22 lives, inundating hundreds of villages, paralysing road and rail traffic and damaging crops.

The rains triggered by northeast monsoon and Cyclone Nilam, which crossed the coast near Chennai Wednesday, have so far killed 22 people, said T. Radha, commissioner, disaster management.

PMO tweets government’s record progress

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s office Sunday went on Twitter to highlight the achievements of his government, just after his speech at the Congress rally where he said the UPA government’s economic policies had benefitted the people.

More than 50 protestors under the banner of the Indian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (INCABI) Sunday demanded boycott of a musical production by the Israeli ensemble Cameri Theatre here because the theatre group allegedly serves as a propaganda tool for the state of Israel.

US Navy frigate skipper fired after drunken Russia visit

The skipper of a US Navy frigate has been fired after a probe established his subordinates were involved in drunken behaviour in the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok, the homeport of the Pacific Fleet, the US Navy reported.

“Commander, Destroyer Squadron 15 relieved the commanding officer of the San Diego-based frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) Nov 2,” the US Navy said in a statement on its website.

Explosion near UN office in Syria

An explosive device Sunday ripped through a garage in front of Dama Rose Hotel, where a UN political office is housed, in the Syrian capital of Damascus, witnesses said.

The blast was so powerful that it shattered windows of the heavily-fortified hotel, a witness told Xinhua, adding that some people in the vicinity were injured.

Children with a thin placenta at birth have double the chances of dying from a sudden heart failure, warns a leading British physician.

A thin placenta can hit the quality of a baby’s foetal development by reducing the flow of nutrients between mother and child, and this can affect the way the heart develops.

David Barker, physician and professor of clinical epidemiologist at the University of Southampton, said it was crucial the characteristics of the placenta were recorded.

Record 75 percent voting in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh Sunday registered a record high polling of around 75 percent in elections for 68 assembly constituencies, Election Commission officials said.

The state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Narinder Chauhan, told IANS in Shimla: “The voter turnout was approximately 75 percent.”

In New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla told reporters that the final figure for turnout was likely to go up as voting in about 200 booths continued even after 5 p.m.

“It is quite possible (that a) record is set. It is already higher (than the figure of 2007 polls),” Shukla said.

The army has stepped up vigil along the Line of Control (LoC) to thwart infiltration attempts from across the border before the ensuing winter, an army officer said here Sunday.

Ajmal Kasab down with fever in prison, dengue suspected

Mumbai terror attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab is suffering from fever and undergoing treatment in the high security Arthur Road jail here, police said on Sunday.

“Kasab is being treated for fever for the past few days. Suspecting that the prisoner could be suffering from dengue, three tests were conducted on him by a team of doctors of JJ hospital but the results were negative,” said a police official on condition of anonymity.

“Doctors do not want to take any chance. Kasab is under observation and responding well to the treatment,” the official said.
