Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Monday went across the international border here to explore more avenues of overland trade with Pakistan’s Punjab province and help change the geopolitics of the subcontinent.

He is accompanied by a 30-member delegation that includes industrialists, exporters, traders and government officials.

New tool developed to diagnose cancer cells

A new tool known as MS-Chip can instantly tell cancerous cells from normal cells by having them go through microscopic barriers, say researchers who developed it.

The flexible cancerous cells can navigate through the tool’s microscopic holes easily. But the rigid benign cells have trouble squeezing through them because of their well-developed cytoskeleton, a network of tiny but strong rod-shaped proteins that give cells their shape and structure.

Mushaira on importance of water

A subject based mushaira was held at Mahboob Husain Jigar Hall on November 3. Poets enthralled the audience with their ghazals. Dr. Narsimha Reddy presented inaugural address. Mr. Shujat Ali (IAS) presided over. Mrs. Tasneem Jauhar and Taqi Askari Wala were the honourary guests. Atyab Aijaz moderated the mushaira. Poet Yousuf Ravish set the ball rolling.

Organised by Chetana Society in association with Basthi Vikas Manch, the ‘mushaira’ was intended to create awareness about the dwindling water resources and the need to preserve the precious commodity.

Baby Damini discharged from hospital

Motherless baby Damini, who was admitted at a private hospital here following government support, was Monday discharged in a healthy condition.

Damini, now one-and-a-half month old, whose father was compelled to carry her in a cloth sling while riding a cycle rickshaw, was admitted to the Fortis hospital, Jaipur, in a critical condition with respiratory problems, infection in the blood and kidney among others medical issues on October 21.

No deadline for lifting AFSPA: Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said he wanted a phased withdrawal of a legislation that gives sweeping powers to armed forces but would not fix a deadline.

“There is no deadline for the removal of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) as of now, but it will go and the work is in progress on this count,” Abdullah told reporters.

He was speaking after the ceremonial opening of government offices in this winter capital.

University system not producing well-educated graduates: Tharoor

The university system was not producing “well-educated” graduates to meet needs of Indian companies, giving an opportunity to firms to enter the sector in the “guise” of training, Minister of State for Higher Education Shashi Tharoor on Monday said.

He also said that the national education policy in the past has been out of step with the times.

Audit a contractual obligation; RIL will abide by it: Moily

Amidst a row over CAG audit of Reliance Industries’ KG-D6 gas field spendings, Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily on Monday said audit was a contractual obligation and hoped that the company will abide by it.

“I have already gone on record to say that it is a contractual relationship between the government and the respective contracting parties… Audit (of spending on oil and gas fields) is part of this (contractual obligation),” he told reporters here.

Canadian PM, wife visit Taj Mahal

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen visited the Taj Mahal here Monday morning, officials said. He described the 17th century Mughal monument as a “gift of beauty for all humanity”.

“The visit lasted for one hour from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.,” Archaeological Survey of India official in charge of the Taj Mahal Munazzar Ali said.

The prime minister in blue suit and his wife in white took a stroll back alone from the monument. The couple held hands as they walked up a pathway, the marble structure rising up in the haze behind them.

Quality of education tied to GDP growth: Shashi Tharoor

The new selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil also included Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay in place of S Badrinath, who featured in the last Test against New Zealand in August.

“3 Kanya” director denies references to Park Street rape

Film ‘3 Kanya’ director Agnidev Chatterjee has denied that his film is inspired by last year’s infamous Park Street gang rape, saying it does not refer to any specific incident.

“I will rather describe the film as a thriller which has many issues confronting a woman and not necessarily one which confines itself to one single subject,” Chatterjee, who is also the film’s producer, said.

German woman raped, robbed in Mumbai

A German national was today allegedly raped and robbed by unidentified persons at her residence in suburban Bandra, police said here.

“A German woman approached us claiming that she has been raped. Accordingly, we registered her complaint and are investigating the matter,” said a police official.

The incident occurred at her residence in posh Bandra locality, police said, adding that she also claimed to have been robbed.

MBBS student commits suicide

An MBBS student allegedly committed suicide by consuming excessive sleeping pills here, police said today.

Shashank (22), a final year MBBS student of a private college at Sitapura here, was found lying in an unconscious state in his rented room yesterday.

When his mother failed to contact him on his mobile phone, she called Shashank’s friend who went to his room and broke open the door.

“He was taken to a private hospital where he died yesterday,” police said today.

Congress demands apology from BJP for Gadkari comments

Attacking the BJP over party president Nitin Gadkari’s comment drawing a comparison between the IQ level of Swami Vivekananda and fugitive don Dawood Ibhrahim, the Congress Monday said it demonstrates the party’s “level of thinking and mentality” and demanded an apology.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said Gadkari’s speech at an event in Bhopal Sunday is “yet another manifestation of their culture and mentality. Train services affected due to cyclone ‘Nilam’

Train services were affected on Sunday due to heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh triggered by cyclone ‘Nilam’ with East Coast Railway (ECoR) cancelling, short-terminating or diverting several trains.

Trains were rescheduled as water level was flowing above the danger mark in Thandava River between Tuni and Gullipadu stations in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam section of Vijaywada Division of South Central Railway, ECoR sources said.

24 children die of mysterious disease in Odisha district

With 24 children dying of a mysterious disease during last two months in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, the government has launched a drive to create health awareness and conduct medical examination in the tribal-dominated district.
