K V Thomas apprises PM Manmohan Singh of high-level panel on internal trade

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas on Tuesday apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the progress made in setting of a high-level panel to discuss internal trade issues that may arise after the government allowed FDI in multi-brand retail.

In September, the Cabinet gave green signal to 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail. It had also directed setting up of a high-level committee under the chairmanship of the Consumer Affairs Minister to make recommendations to the government on internal trade reforms.

EC rejects Swamy’s plea to derecognise Congress

In a setback to Janta Party chief Subramanian Swamy, the Election Commission on Tueday rejected his plea seeking to derecognise Congress as a national party for violating laws by providing a Rs 90 crore loan to a company that published the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.

In a letter to Election Commission, Swamy had alleged the Congress has “prima facie” committed an offence under electoral law as well as Income Tax law for which it is necessary to hold hearings and decide on derecognising the party.

AI flight with Haj pilgrims make emergency landing

An Air-India plane with 400 Haj pilgrims onboard made an emergency landing at the NSC Bose International Airport here tonight after its fire alarm suddenly went off due to a technical glitch.

The Boeing 747 aircraft landed safely at 10.45 PM, airport sources said.

The plane from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was scheduled to land at 11.10 PM but the pilot sought to make emergency landing when the fire alarm went off due to some technical glitch, they said.

All the passengers were safe, the sources said.

Three killed in NSCN factional fight

Three persons were killed and as many, including two passers-by, suffered bullet wounds in a suspected factional clash between two rival groups of NSCN in the heart of Dimapur town, police said today.

The incident occurred when some suspected GPRN/NSCN gunmen stopped an auto rickshaw carrying four persons near the SP office and tried to drag them out yesterday.

With Dawood Ibrahim, the man behind the 1993 Mumbai bombings, still out of its reach, India on Tuesday said the masterminds of the heinous serial blasts are sitting in safe havens in Pakistan which has taken no action against them despite being provided with credible evidence.

Addressing the Interpol General Assembly here, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said India continues to face a “high degree” of terrorist threats on several fronts, in particular of cross-border terrorism.

“Terrorism in South Asia has increasingly emerged as an effective strategic weapon,” he said.

PM offers help to Andhra Pradesh flood victims

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday called Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy with an offer of help from the central government for flood-affected areas of the state.

“The prime minister has directed the chief minister to constantly monitor the situation and extend all possible assistance for relief and rehabilitation,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

It said that Manmohan Singh also extended his sympathies to those who have lost dear ones in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts.

40 voters in Himachal reject all candidates

Forty electors in Himachal Pradesh rejected all the candidates for the assembly polls and went away without voting, an official said here Tuesday.

“Forty voters invoked Rule 49-O of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, by not voting for any candidate in the assembly elections (Nov 4),” Neeraj Sharma, officer on special duty with the state election department, said.

This incident occurred in Musheerabad police station limits where Anitha, 40, took the extreme step. She was immediately shifted to the hospital where she died during the treatment.

She was the wife of one Ravi, resident of Ganesh Nagar. Both of them got married 15 years back. However, the couple developed differences and used to fight with each other.

HC seeks Police’ response to Kanda’s bail plea

The Delhi High Court today asked the city police to file its response to the bail application of former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, an accused in the air hostess Geetika Sharma suicide case.

Malala shooter’s sister apologises for attack

The sister of a man suspected in the shooting of Malala Yousufzai has apologised to the teenage Pakistani rights activist, saying that her brother had brought shame to their family.

“Please convey a message to Malala, that I apologise for what my brother did to her,” Rehana Haleem said, referring to the actions of her 23-year-old brother Attahullah Khan.

“He has brought shame on our family. We have lost everything after what he did. What he did was intolerable,” Haleem said.

Tendulkar to get Order of Autralia today

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is set to add another feather to his already crowded cap as he would be conferred the membership of the Order of Australia, an honour “rarely” awarded to non-Australians on Tuesday.

Earlier during her visit to India last month, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had announced that the iconic Indian cricketer would be conferred the membership of the Order of Australia.

Rajesh Kumar, who holds a Korean passport, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly carrying two professional digital cameras along with two sets of lens, 48 refurbished mobiles and 190 grams of gold bars (valuing about Rs six lakh), a customs official said.

NCP grooming Ajit Pawar as next CM

Ajit Pawar, who resigned as deputy chief minister in September, was being groomed for a higher responsibility, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) indicated Tuesday.

“We will show what a chief minister should be like… Ajit Pawar will show them…” state NCP chief Madhukar Pichad said about Ajit Pawar, the nephew of party chief and union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar who quit as deputy chief minister Sep 25.

Endorsing the developments, NCP state spokesperson Nawab Malik Tuesday said the entire party wants Ajit Pawar to play “a commanding role” (of a chief minister).

Haji Ali dargah bans entry of women

The management of Mumbai’s iconic Sufi shrine Haji Ali Dargah, which is visited by thousands of devotees every year, has restricted the entry of women.

The Haji Ali Dargah Trust says it’s “un-Islamic under the Sharia” for women to visit graves and its decision is final.

The trust says women are free to be within the dargah’s compound but cannot enter the sanctum sanctorum that houses the tomb of 15th century Sufi saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.

Aks-e-Hyderabad – First edition was sold out

(Siasat News) Aks-e-Hyderabad album has almost been sold out on the very first day of its release two days back. 500 copies were printed in the first edition. On the occasion of its releasing ceremony, 83 albums were sold out. Now there are only 17 copies left out.

In view of the huge demand from the public, arrangement has been made for the publication of its second edition. It is expected that the second edition of the album would be available in the 3rd week of November.

Readers are requested to book their copies well in advance to avoid disappointment.
